PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

Les has seen fashions in education come and go, and come again. His firm belief in the power of direct

instruction and making connections with students has stood the test of time. He still goes to reunions

with students he taught decades ago. In fact, some of them may already have retired ahead of Les.

Literally thousands of students have benefitted from Les’ instruction, nurturing, guidance and ability to

see the ‘big picture’. I know one young man who said he felt, as a primary school child, it was only Mr

Boag who had any trust or confidence in him.

Students have also benefitted from Les’ skill in the selection of excellent staff, both teaching and non-

teaching, as he only employs those who are passionate about children.

I am one of the teachers who owe a great debt of gratitude to Les for my own teaching career. He takes

a huge interest in his staff and their aspirations. This may even mean that he encourages excellent staff

to leave his school to gain a promotion or experience elsewhere. Les has been a mentor to so many.

When he offered his resignation earlier this year to take effect at the end of Term Two, Les was asked by

the Regional Director to reconsider so he could remain to mentor some of the new principals. Luckily for

us he agreed to an extra six months at Templeton.

No amount of discussion has persuaded Les to agree to a fitting retirement function. He is very modest

but I have been able to talk him into a special assembly to be held on the morning of the very last day of

the 2017 school year. (The regular afternoon assembly will still be held to say goodbye to our Year 6s

and announce the School Captains for 2018.) The morning assembly will be a chance for parents and

students to wish Mr Boag a happy and long retirement with his loving wife, Chris. I hope many of you are

able to make it.

Maths or Math? You may wonder why Mrs Hynes is so fussy about saying and writing the word MathS and

not Math. Well, here is why!

There are many countries in the world, including Australia, that say Maths not Math. Al-

so, Maths was made into a plural noun because it is short for MathematicS - and the s on

the end is important. It captures all the different forms of MathematicS and ways of be-

ing mathematical - e.g. drawing a diagram, working backwards, thinking creatively, com-

municating, generalising, visualising and connecting ideas, to name a few. The singular

word Math sounds more narrow and people in the US often say “do the Math” when they

mean "do a calculation”! Maths is so much more than calculating so I like the word

MathS!

So at Templeton, we say and write MATHS!
