On the beautiful day, June 4, 18(>2, he was united in matj imony u, Malissa Laferty, a daughter of John and Malissa (Nicholas) Laicrty; she was born July, 1844 in Machias,N. Y. Lidding his young wife good-bye, he entered the ranks of the great Northern army Aug. 20^ 18b2 at Machias as aprivate in Co. 1, lo4 N. Y. V. 1., 2d Jhig.,2d Div., 11th A. C. He was a soldier through ami tlirnugh, and no where was his courage bettershown than in battles of Clianeellorsville, Chattanooga, Bridgeport, Missionary Ridge, Kenesaw Mt., Reseea, PiMni)kin Vine Creek. While on the Fredericksburg cam|)aign he was conHned to his tent suflering with the mumps. May, ISt;:! was taken prisonei- a t Chancelloi-bville and sent to Libby prison for two weeks, and Ihdl Is- land for two weeks, lie escaped in a uni(iue manner; as the prison- ers in single tile marched by the rebel inspectors, a thunder storm canae up and in the confusion Comrade Philli|)s slipi)ed into the line and marched out with them. In Lookout Valley he was detailed as cook, and was thus engaged when he was wounded. R. up to Amelia Springs. He was captured five times during his service but each time escaped.
