3 MCRI Welcomes New Staff Welcometoallournewemployees!
Iwasprobably12yearsoldwhenIlostaveryclosefamilymemberduetocancer.IrememberveryclearlythepainourfamilywentthroughandallthequestionsthatIhadthatwereunanswered.Threedecadesago,grow-ingupinadevelopingcountrymeantmyfamilydidnothavemanyoptionsavailableformedicalcareandtechnology.Thiswasthemomentmyjourneybegan-Iwantedtomakeadifferenceinhowhealthcareisdeliveredandhelppeopleandtheirfamilies.
IamsoproudtobepartofanorganizationlikeMCHSwhereresearchisanintegralcomponentofcaredeliveryandtheestablishmentoftheCancerCareandResearchCenter(CCRC)asthenewestcenterisatestamenttothisvalue.Wehavehadalotofvisionarieswhohaveworkedtirelesslyoverthedecadesforustorealizethismilestone.Iamsothank-fulforallthemandthemanystaffacrossMarsh ieldClinicandMCRIwhomadethispossible.Integrationoftheoncologyresearch/treatmenttrialsaspartofourroutinecaredeliveryisveryimportantassometimesthesevaluabletreatmentoptionsmightbethelastchanceforourpatientswhoare ightingcancer.

IamhappytoannouncethattheMCRISharedServicesleadershipteamhasbeenestablishedandstartedmeetingregularlytobeginaddressingourprocessesandpoliciesastheyassessthequalityofservicesdelivered,identifyopportunitiesforimprovement,anddevelopanopencommunicationplan.TheOf iceofResearchComputingandAnalytics(ORCA)ledbyMr.JoeEllefsonhasinitiatedmeetingwiththecenterleadershiptofurtherunderstandingoftheirresearchsupportneeds.JoeandhisteamsarealsodevelopingthemanyprocessesandpoliciessupportingtheHubandSpokemodelofservicesthatwehaveembarkedon.TheIntegratedResearchandDevelopmentLab(IRDL)ledbyDr.JenMeececontin-uestoprovideahighqualityofservicetothevariousresearchprojectsacrossMCRIandMarsh ieldClinic.TheOf iceofResearchSupportServices(ORSS)recentlywelcomedMrs.JordonOttasitsDirector.Mostrecently,JordonservedastheDirector,Of iceofExtramuralSupportatUniversityofWisconsin-Extension(UWEX)inMadisonsinceFebruary,2014.
AtUWEX,Jordondirectedcentrallyorganizedadmin-istrative,business, and inancialfunctionsrelatedtoawardadministrationforUWEXwithover$38mil-lioninextramuralfundsreceivedinFY2016.IamalsohappytoannouncethatMarsh ieldClinicHealthSystemwasrecentlygrantedFullRe-Accreditationfor iveyearsbytheAssociationfortheAccreditationofHumanResearchProtectionsPrograms(AAHRPP).Accreditationisapublicaf irmationofourcommit-menttoprotectingresearchparticipants.IamverythankfulforthemanystafffromORSSandothersacrossMCRIandMarsh ieldClinicwhohelpedwiththisprocess.

OnJanuary17,2018–HHSand15OtherFederalDe-partmentsandAgenciesAnnouncedanInterimFinalRulethatdelaysboththeeffectivedateandgeneralcompliancedateoftherevisionstotheFederalPolicyfortheProtectionsofHumansSubjectsuntilJuly19,2018.TherevisionsproposedintheFinalCommonRulewhichwaspublishedinJanuary2017togointoeffectonJan.19,2018,wereintendedtomodernize,strengthenandmakemoreeffectivetheFederalPoli-cyfortheProtectionofHumanSubjectsthatwasorig-inallypromulgatedasa“CommonRule”in1991.
AtthistimeallFederalregulationsinwhichMarsh-ieldClinicResearchInstitute’sIRBfollowswillremainastheyarecurrently.AswearegivenfurtherguidanceandareclosertotheJulydate,wewillplanforfurtherdiscussionsandtrainings.

Dr.AhmadP.Tafti,JonathanBadger,EricLaRose,EhsanShirzadi(IEEE),Dr.JohnMayer,AndreaMahnke,Dr.ZhanYe,Dr.DavidPage(UW-Madison),andDr.PeggyPeissigconceivedanddesignedthestudy,andcollaboratedonthepaperwhichaimsatdevelopinganintelligentbigdataarti icialneuralnetworkframeworkcomposedofElas-ticsearchNo-SQLdistributedDatabaseandApacheSparktoextractadversedrugeventsemployingamassiveda-tasetobtainedfromPubMedCentralandhealth-relatedsocialmedia(e.g.,WebMD,MedHelp,Patient).
Theaccuracy,precision,recall,andareaunderreceiveroperatingcharacteristicofthesystemwere92.7%,93.6%,93.0%,and0.905,respectively,andshowedbetterresultsincomparisonwithtraditionalapproachesinthelitera-ture.Thisworknotonlydetectedandclassi iedADEsfrombigdatabiomedicalliteraturebutalsoscienti icallyvisu-alizedADEinteractions.

TheHolidayseasonisatimeofgivingandtheCenterforClinicalEpidemiologyandPopulationHealth(CCEPH)didjustthat.Theygatheredtogetherforcol-lectionofnonperishablefooditems,cashdonations,andsocksinsupportofSouporSocks(SOS).SOSisaUnitedWayProgramandanemergencyfoodpantyforMarsh ieldandthesurroundingarea.
CCEPHdeveloped iveteamsandcreatedacheerfulenvironmentfulloffunandcompetitionwithastonish-ingresults.WiththelistofneededitemsproducedbySOS,CCEPHimplementedaweightandpointbasedcompetitiontoencouragedonations.Inamatteroftwoandahalfweeks,CCEPHcollected359itemsand$750incashdonationsforSOS.WitheverycompetitionthereisawinnerandthewinningteamwasTheUnper‐ishableElves.TeammembersincludedBobbiBradley,TaraJohnson,DianeKohnhorst,DavidMcClure,DebMulterer,JeremyPomeroy,andJeffVanWormer.
