POUNDING THE PAVEMENT

COFFEE SHOPS

Shiro Hebi Shrine. While the white snake museum in Kikko Park may be more well-known, there is another place to see white snakes. The Shiro Hebi Shrine is located in Imazu, not far from Nakayama Park. It’s about four kilometers (two and half miles) from the base.

Shiro Hebi Shrine

If you’re new to Iwakuni, it can seem like a daunting place. But by Japanese standards, Iwakuni is something of a small town,

and that can work in your favor. There is a lot to see and do within walking and biking distance of MCAS Iwakuni. With summer

approaching, now is a perfect time to get off the base and onto the pavement, and explore some of the places this town has to offer.

Nagayama Park. Located in Yamate, this park is sloped, so it is slightly sunk beneath the road that runs next to it. There is a circular walking path lined with many cherry blossom trees. It is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing parties (hanami). With a convenience store nearby, it is a great place to eat lunch and relax. It’s located about five kilometers (three miles) from the base.

Marutomi. Located in Marifu on the same street as Edion, this toy store has a good selection of toys, many Gundam models, and a video game section. But the other half of the store is interesting for its cultural gifts. Every year they have lavish displays for the Girls’s Festival and the Boys’s Festival. These dolls, signs, and displays can run from $100 to $10,000. Different displays are rotated out during the year, depending on what season it is. It’s about four kilometers (two and a half miles) from the base.

Kikko Park is located behind Kintai Bridge. The beautiful grounds make it a great place to go and relax. There are many things to do there: a white snake museum, a ropeway ride to Iwakuni Castle (which you can also hike to), a flower garden, and traditional samurai houses. When you’re finished walking, three different soft ice cream places can give you a cold treat. Sasaki Kojiro is the most popular spot, they also have a restaurant serving traditional Japanese food. Another soft serve place, Musashi, serves more exotic ice cream flavors, like natto and ramune. There are two gift shops in Kikko Park, as well as a restaurant serving healthy Japanese food.

Cazl Mall. This shopping center is on Route 2 in Marifu, across from McDonald’s. Along with the Fresta supermarket, Cazl has Futabatosho, a book and movie/music store; the shoe store ABC Mart; Uniqlo; and Mochimo, which is serves Italian food; and the popular sushi restaurant Kura Sushi. The latter is especially popular at lunch time and weekends. Orders are taken by a touch screen menu and served on a fast track belt system. I sometimes call it the Shinkansen (bullet train) sushi restaurant. Every five plates gets you a chance for a captcha toy from the machine located above every table. A good place for families. The mall is only about five kilometers (three miles) away from base.

These are just many of the places you can find in Iwakuni. One of the best ways is to get out and explore, venturing into

whatever place catches your eye. This small town may not be as happening as Hiroshima, but it has a lot to offer and is a great starting place to explore Japan and its unique culture. Stop by

ITT for more information on the locations listed above!

6 THINGS TO DO WITHOUT A CAR IN IWAKUNI by Cody L. Martin, Community Writer

Coffee shops. While you may not see big names like Starbucks, Excelsior, or

Doutor here, coffee shops abound in Iwakuni. Cafe Ange, across the street

from city hall has a relaxing and warm atmosphere. It also serves snacks and light lunches. Tully’s is located in Cazl Mall and is like Starbucks light, with

drinks like cafe mocha and honey latte. They serve sandwiches,

pasta, and breakfast. They are open the longest hours, from 9

am to midnight. Another is Kitchen Cafe Fore. This shop

is relaxing and quiet, serving well-brewed and strong

coffee. They also have small deserts and snacks. It is

about four kilometers (two and half miles) from the

base, across from city hall.

Looking for a getaway that’s outside the MCAS Iwakuni gates, but not too far or too tough on the pocketbook? Oshima Island may

be perfect place for you to check out for a day or two. Simply head out any base gate to Route 188 and take it to the left. The island is

about 22 km, or about 45 minutes to an hour away, depending on traffic. Just watch for the big green bridge and prepare to turn right

at the traffic signal (on to Route 437) below the bridge to wind your way up to it to cross over. Turn left at the end of the bridge and

continue to follow 437 around the coast of the island. Here are some of the highlights the island has to offer:

Katazoe Beach offers fun, sun and sand to beach lovers. You can fish, paddle board

(check them out from Outdoor Recreation at Ironworks Gym for free, along with

all sorts of camping and fishing equipment) or simply soak up the rays beach side.

Nestled on the hill above the is the Katazoe Camping Area, which has both spots for

tent campers (either with or without electricity and water, depending on how

much you like to “rough it”) and cabins for those of us who like hot showers

and air conditioning. Simply go to the ITT office in Crossroads

Mall and ask them to make a reservation for you. Expect to

pay about 5,000 yen for a tent site and between 13,000 and

16,000 yen for a cabin (depending on the size, from 4 to 8 people)

each night.

The Nagisa Aquarium is small, about three rooms, but you have the opportunity to see local specific of sea life, touch starfish and wade with sharks. And all for 210 yen per adult and 100 yen per child under 12. Definitely a good choice if you happen to visit the island on a rainy day: the entire aquarium is under one roof. Simply keep driving along 437, further on to the island, until you see a white, vertical sign with a red arrow pointing left in to a driveway/parking lot. The aquarium is open daily from 9 AM to 4:30 PM.

Aloha Orange i s a Hawaii- inspired restaurant and that is always delicious. My recommendation: The garlic shrimp and the macadamia nut pancakes. Lunch is 11 AM to 3 PM and the restaurant is closed on Wednesdays. You can eat for about 1,500 yen per person. You can read more about the restaurant on IwakuniExplorer.com

The Oshimagokoku Shrine is a gorgeous place where you can both enjoy nature and some traditional Japanese culture. There is a small shrine at the base of the stairs leading up to the main buildings, and then two structures on the top of the hill. You will definitely burn off some of those pancakes with the climb. To get there, after passing Aloha Orange on 437, you will see an orangey red Jutendo sign with an arrow pointing inland. Follow the sign. Go to Jutendo (A grocery store is to the right of Jutendo, just FYI) and, instead of pulling in to the Jutendo parking lot, turn left on the road in front of it, and then right at the next major intersection. Follow it around for less than a kilometer and you will find the shrine gate. Park here and walk down the small, paved path. The shrine steps will be in front of you, just across a small concrete bridge. This activity is FREE!

The Hira Marketplace has some shops, fast food, a cafe and an ice cream parlor. But it is what’s behind the marketplace that’s even more interesting for adventurers at heart. If you walk through the marketplace, you can take the sea wall to the right, around the small wharf and, if the tides aren’t too high, you can walk across a land bridge to a tiny island. Just a word of warning: There is a lot of trash on this island so watch small children carefully. But older children will enjoy climbing on the rocks and counting the number of rusty buckets and abandoned fishing floats they can find. From the big green bridge, the market place will be on the left about 30km in, just before you reach the turn off for Katazoe Beach.

There are over 150,000 temples and shrines located throughout the country, and I have made it to many of the famous ones. However, one of the most interesting temples I have ever come across is the Kosan-ji Temple on Ikuchi Island (Ikuchijima), near Onomichi. A wealthy businessman built the temple for his mother, and ther some very interesting things on the temple grounds. The one area that really stands out in my mind as being very unusual is the area with the Italian marble. He had approximately 3,000 tons of marble flown in from Italy so this area could be completed. The history behind the creation of this temple is very interesting and the temple grounds are unlike any other you will see in Japan. Kosan-ji should definitely be added to your list of places to visit while stationed here.

Temples and shrines in Japan are beautiful and full of history. They are first and foremost, a place for people to pray though. Did you know that people will travel to a particular shrine based on what they are praying for? For example, prosperity shrines like the Taikodani Inari Shrine in Tsuwano, are quite popular during the New Year holiday. Many business owners from all over Japan flock to the shrine to pray for a prosperous New Year. There are also fertility shrines, like the Taga Shrine in Uwajima. The interesting thing about the fertility shrines is that they usually have phalluses of all shapes and sizes at the shrine. People will travel to the fertility shrines to pray for fertility and abundance. Some of the fertility shrines will also host a fertility festival once a year. Definitely one of the most interesting festivals I have ever been to. Some of the rituals performed in Japan are also very interesting. One that is worth seeing and (maybe) even participating in is the fire walking ritual at the Daigan-ji Temple on the first Sunday in November, and at the Daisho-in Temple on 15 April and 15 November. Both of these temples are located on Miya-jima Island so they are very easy to get to. There is a ceremony, a bonfire is lit and once the fire dies down, those who wish to join in can walk barefoot across the coals while praying for good health and fortune.

Did you ever think you would come across a

desert-like area in Japan? Complete with camels?

I didn’t think so either. Then, I visited the Tottori

Sand Dunes recently. It really is like a little desert,

and not anything I would expect to see here.

I even saw some camels! When you go, make

sure you check out the Sand Museum. The sand

sculptures there are amazing!

If you are a fan of themed restaurants and cafés,

you are definitely in the right country. From

cat cafés to restaurants with robots to vampire

themed places, Japan does not have a shortage

of interesting eateries. Some of them might seem

a little over the top, but that's what makes them

so much fun. While most of these interesting

restaurants are located in the larger cities, like

Tokyo and Osaka, Hiroshima has a really fun

themed restaurant that is worth checking out.

Especially if you like getting "arrested".

Some interesting theme parks are Sanrio

Puroland (Hello Kitty Land) and Yufuin Floral

Village. Oddly enough, both of these are located

in Kyushu. Hello Kitty Land is for all lovers of

Hello Kitty, but I am told it is more entertaining

to younger children. The Yufuin Floral Village

really looks like something out of a fairy tale.

The buildings were designed to look like those

found in a beautiful area of England called the

Cotswolds. It’s not a very big village so it gives you

plenty of time to explore the Yufuin area and visit

some onsens (hot springs).

In Japan, onsens are a wonderful place to go and

soak away your stress, or heal your tired body after

a full day of sightseeing. Some of them contain

minerals that soften your skin, or to ease tired

and aching muscles. I can definitely vouch for how

great it feels to soak in a nice hot bath after a long

day of traveling or sightseeing. I’m not sure how

I would feel about soaking in a hot tub of wine

though. I love to drink wine, but I never thought

about soaking my tired body in it. Apparently

there is a place in Hakone called Yunnesun Spa

Resort, which offers a few very interesting onsens.

There is the wine onsen, a coffee onsen, green tea

onsen, and a sake onsen. Which ones would you

like to soak in?

There is a wisteria tunnel located in Kyushu that is

an amazing sight to see. The Kawachi Fuji Garden

is visited by people from all over Japan every

year from the end of May through the beginning

of June. I finally made it there this year and it is

even more beautiful in person. It really is a tunnel

of wisteria flowers! I could have sat there for a

few hours admiring the beautiful wisteria and

enjoying the lovely fragrance. If you decide to

check this out, I recommend you go early because

it gets pretty crowded.

If you have never seen a vine bridge before, head

over to Shikoku to see one of the rarest bridges

in Japan. The vine bridge is located in Iya Valley,

which is located in Tokushima. Though kind

of scary to cross, it’s a beautiful bridge in a very

scenic area. It is also rebuilt every three years so

it’s quite safe to cross.

A lot of people really get into the many different

Kit Kat flavors when they move to Japan. The

leader in Kit Kat flavors, Japan has even opened

a Kit Kat shop in Tokyo called Chocolatory. This

store is the only place where you can purchase the

Sublime Kit Kat. I love how the company makes it

challenging by making certain flavors available

for purchase only in certain areas. Whenever I

travel within Japan, I search the area for Kit Kats!

Whether it’s checking out a café full of cats or

walking through a tunnel of fragrant flowers or

soaking your tired body in some red wine, I hope

this will help you plan your next adventure.

Visit one of many theme restaurants for a truly unique dining

by Amelia Carolyn Chappell, MS, P&PD Instructor and Anthony Goodsell, Work and Family Life Program Coordinator

As another PCS season revolves, both new and old Station residents are thinking about their remaining time in Iwakuni. At this point,

you may fall somewhere between two extremes—newly arrived and simply thinking about what amazing Japanese meal you

will have out in town first or realizing that you have limited time remaining to accomplish the items on your Iwakuni bucket list. What if

I were to ask you today to tell me about your five year career goal? How have you made progress toward the accomplishment of this goal?

Many people worry that they will have to put their careers on hold while they are here but this isn’t true if you consider all of your options. The

ability to be adaptable and learn new skills is highly marketable and something employers desire. With each move, you are given the opportunity

to make your résumé more colorful. These years can be used to explore new ideas and gain new skills with a new type of employment or internship,

make a difference in the community by volunteering, or continue your education.

EMPLOY MENT: Mar i ne Cor ps

money from your hobby. Career Resources

workshop in September that will help you

get started. Learn the requirements for

running a business out of your on-base

home and network with successful Iwakuni

edge for future employment. Call MCCS Human Resources at 253-3030 for

KEEPING OUR KIDS SAFE AUGUST 5, 9-11 AM, YUJO HALL From the time they leave the womb, children are subject to a dangerous world and it’s our job as parents to keep them safe. We can’t be with them every second, but if we can educate them on keeping themselves safe, they stand a better chance. Join MCFTB and learn how to keep your kids safe. You will also have the opportunity to bring home some craft ideas to share with your children while talking about their safety.

CONTROLLING YOU AUGUST 6, NOON - 2 PM, YUJO HALL No matter who you are or where you may be from, feeling frustrated or angered are all normal human emotions. The question is, why do some people give in to their emotions, whereas others are able to keep their temper at bay? Join MCFTB and learn where the root of your anger lies and how to express it appropriately, paying big dividends in your relationships at home and in the workplace.

FAMILY CARE PLAN AUGUST 6, 3-4 PM, YUJO HALL What happens if you become sick, are unable to take care of yourself, and your spouse is deployed? Who is going to take care of you? What happens if something happens to you which makes you incapable of caring for your child? Who is going to care for your child? These are all questions which must be answered, because it is vital to military readiness. The Marine Corps has a document which enables the Marine to select individuals who would care for his/her dependents in their absence. Learn what a Family Care Plan is and how you and your Marine can ensure all family members are taken care of.

Raising a child comes with many decisions. Some are a matter of taste, like what color to paint the nursery. Others are essential, especially when it comes to safety, like baby proofing your home for potential hazards. But what about the hazards that you can’t see and that can cause serious illness, disability or even death to young children? Immunizations give you the power to protect your baby from 14 serious childhood diseases.

Protecting your child’s health and safety is very important to you. That’s why most parents choose immunization. Nothing protects your babies better from 14 serious childhood diseases. Choose to immunize, it is a powerful defense that is safe, proven and effective. Diseases don’t stop at the border, and many can spread easily. You may have never seen a case of polio or diphtheria, but they still occur in other countries. All it takes is a plane ride for these diseases to arrive in your community.

SERIOUS DISEASES ARE STILL OUT THEREReducing and eliminating the diseases that vaccines prevent is one of the top achievements in the history of public health. Because of this success, most young parents have never seen the devastating effects that diseases like polio, measles, or whooping cough (pertussis) can have on a family or community. It’s easy to think of these as diseases that only existed in the past, but they still exist today. Children can and do still get some of these diseases. In fact, when the vaccination rates drop in a community, it’s not uncommon to have an outbreak. For example, preliminary data for 2012 show that more than 41,000 cases of whooping cough were reported in the United States. During this time, 18 deaths were reported; the majority of these deaths were in children younger than 3 months of age (to learn more about recent outbreaks of pertussis visit www.cdc.gov/pertussis/outbreaks.html#activity).

VACCINES ARE SAFEThe United States currently has the safest, most effective vaccine supply in its history. Before a vaccine is approved and g iven to children, it is tested extensively. Scientists and medical professionals carefully evaluate all the available information about the vaccine to determine its safety and effectiveness. As new scientific information becomes available, vaccine recommendations are updated. Although there may be some

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

discomfort or tenderness at the injection

site, this is minor compared to the serious

complications that can result from the

diseases these vaccines prevent. Serious

side effects from vaccines are very rare.

CHILDREN NEEDPROTECTION EARLYThe Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC) sets the U.S. childhood

immunizat ion schedule based on

recommendations from the Advisory

Committee on Immunization Practices

(ACIP)- a group of medical and public health

experts. This schedule is also approved by

the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

and the American Academy of Family

Physicians (AAFP). The recommended

childhood immunization schedule is

designed to protect infants and children

early in life, when they are most vulnerable.

To be fully immunized, children need all

doses of the vaccines according to the

recommended schedule. Not receiving

the full number of doses leaves a child

vulnerable to catching serious diseases. It

is important to your child’s health to be up

to date on immunizations.

VACCINATION PROTECTSYOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS,AND COMMUNITYGetting your child vaccinated helps

protect others in your community-like

your neighbor who has cancer and cannot

get certain vaccines, or your best friend’s

newborn baby who is too young to be

fully vaccinated. When everyone in a

community who can gets vaccinated, it

helps to prevent the spread of disease and

can slow or stop an outbreak. Choosing to

protect your child with vaccines is also a

choice to help protect your family, friends,

and neighbors.

GETTING VACCINATIONS WHILE ABOARD MCAS IWAKUNIProof of vaccinations is required in order

to have your child enrolled at MC Perry

Schools, the Child Development Center or

the School Aged Center. If you need a copy

of your child’s vaccination record, please

stop at the Immunizations Office and we

would be happy to assist.

For more information about immunizations

please talk to your doctor or visit www.cdc.
