Those who have undergone rehabilitation are facing one of the worst problems involved
in drug and alcohol addiction: relapse. The tendency to give in is high, particularly if the
abusers are not reaching out for help when warnings signs show up. The best way to
prevent relapse is to understand the factors that lead to it.
Staying Positive
Emotional triggers, physical changes, and social situations may cause relapse. Abusers
must stay positive to avoid anxiety and low self-esteem. Financial changes or loss of a
loved one should not be reasons to go back to the old, bad habits of drinking alcoholic
beverages or taking prohibited drugs. Optimism can help abusers stay on track and avoid
the risks of relapse.
Reaching Out for Help
Dealing with the risks could be easier
when help and moral support are readily
available.Abusers can get the
motivation they need from their families
and rehabilitation specialists.
Maintaining strong personal and social
relationships is key to becoming strong
enough to resist temptations. Those
who were once addicted to alcohol and
drugs must focus on improving their
lives and moving forward. They should
not be reluctant to ask for help when
necessary.
Strengthening Commitment
A strong commitment is necessary
to achieve every goal. Challenges should
not keep abusers from getting their
normal lives back. They must remember
all the benefits they can get from
avoiding alcohol and drugs. Motivation
should start with them; additional
support will come from their families and
friends.
Being Prepared
Creating a detailed plan for relapse prevention is ideal, as this can help a person
deal with signs and cravings more effectively. Calling a therapist or someone who is also
in the recovery stage is a good option. The plan may include performing a variety of
activities that will help divert attention and focus on things that are more meaningful.
Self-control, discipline, and support from those who care are necessary to become
successful in preventing addiction relapse.
