This colorful topper is shaped like a flower, and adds a charming touch to any setting. Each of the petals are a fabulous way to show off your embroidery, and the center is perfect for highlighting a vase of flowers, tea service, or a centerpiece. Project Needs & Notes - 1 1/2 yards of lightweight canvas (I used 3/4 yard each of two different colors) - 1 yard print cotton fabric for center and back - Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer - Air-erase pen for marking - 9" x 9" piece of two-sided fusible web - 1 yard 3/4" wide decorative trim - Fabric glue For this tutorial, I used the small size of the designs from the Australian Bouquet Design pack. Browse through the many Embroidery Library designs to find something that matches your preference and decor. Designs that are 4" x 4" will fit nicely on the petal shapes. Finished Size: 29" in diameter To get started, print the PDF of the pattern pieces. There are two pieces for the wedge, and two pieces for the center. Each print on 8 1/2" x 11" pieces of paper.

Pretty Petals Table Topper

Brighten your tabletop with a lovely floral table topper! This colorful topper is shaped like a flower, and adds a charming touch to any setting. Each of the petals are a fabulous way to show off your embroidery, and the center is perfect for highlighting a vase of flowers, tea service, or a centerpiece.

Project Needs & Notes

- 1 1/2 yards of lightweight canvas (I used 3/4 yard each of two different colors) - 1 yard print cotton fabric for center and back - Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer - Air-erase pen for marking - 9" x 9" piece of two-sided fusible web - 1 yard 3/4" wide decorative trim - Fabric glue

For this tutorial, I used the small size of the designs from the Australian Bouquet Design pack. Browse through the many Embroidery Library designs to find something that matches your preference and decor. Designs that are 4" x 4" will fit nicely on the petal shapes.

Finished Size: 29" in diameter

To get started, print the PDF of the pattern pieces. There are two pieces for the wedge, and two pieces for the center. Each print on 8 1/2" x 11" pieces of paper.

Cut out the pattern pieces and tape them together.

Ten petal shapes compose the table topper.

To prepare the petal pieces, place the paper pattern onto the lightweight canvas.

Pin in place, and trace the shape with an air-erase pen.

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool for planning where to stitch.

Print a template from embroidery software. If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use.

Place the template so there is 2 1/2" of space between the bottom of the design and the bottom of the petal shape, and center it between the sides.

Mark the center point of the design, as well as the horizontal and vertical axis lines.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

Hoop the fabric with one piece of cutaway stabilizer, lining up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine. Load the design and move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point.

Embroider the design.

After embroidering, trim the excess stabilizer away from the back.

Cut out the petal shape.

Repeat the steps above until you have 10 petals -- 5 in one color fabric and 5 in another color fabric.

Arrange the petals so the fabric colors alternate.

Take two of the petals and align them together, right sides together.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the left side only.

Press the seam with an iron. Top-stitch an 1/8" seam along the folded edge fo the seam.

Take the next petal and line it up with the left side of the two petals that you've just sewn together. Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the left side only.

Press the seam and top stitch a 1/8" seam along the folded edge.

Repeat this, working clockwise around the flower.

After sewing the last petal, align the two ends together. Pin in

place and sew a 1/2" seam along the raw edges.

To make the back piece, place the assembled wedges on top of the print cotton fabric, right sides together.

Pin in place, and cut around the outer shape.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the entire outer edge of the shape. Clip the seam allowance about every 1/2" around the entire shape, including where the petals meet.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams.

Place the paper pattern for the center piece on top of the print cotton and cut out the shape.

Add fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric. The packaging instructions should show the steps.

Line up the circle fabric with the circle opening on the top side of the topper, fusible web/wrong side down. Allow the circle to extend about 1" onto the top side fabric around the circle opening.

Press in place. Sew a 1/8" seam around the outer edge of the

Add decorative trim around the circle with fabric glue.

Place the trim half on the circle fabric and half off to cover up the raw edge of the circle.

This bright and colorful table topper can easily be updated to reflect your favorite seasons and holidays.
