Actuator sizing instructions
The valve torque curves within this catalogue show the break out torque requirements of Habonimball valves as a function of valve size ,seat material and differential pressure across the valve when theball is in the closed position.
To ease sizing work, a 20% safety factor torque line was added, this is a standard safety factor forpneumatic actuator in standard service.
For severe applications Habonim recommend’s the use of the following safety factors:ServiceEmergency shut down (ESD) service 1.8IEC 61508 SIL complaint installation 1.8Cryogenic applications (below 600C) 1.5Valves operated less than once a day 1.5Control valves 1.5MediaGas, dirty (natural gas) 1.5Gas , dry 1.3Chlorine 1.5Viscous slurry (cp>100) 2.0Oil, Thermal oil, lubricant 0.8
Note: use the above instead of the standard safety factor and not on top of it.

Actuator sizing instructionsGiven the valve size ,differential pressure across the valve, and the seats material you may obtain the valve breakout torque from the following pressure torque curve (page 5 148).
Calculate the valve torque (T)at points corresponding to a, b, c and d by applying the percentages shown in the tablebelow to the valve maximum torque + Safety Factor (SF)
Once the valve torques have been determined, the actuator can be properly sized.
Double acting operation – Select the actuator whose torque output (at a given instrument air pressure), exceeds themaximum torque + SF requirements of the valve.
Spring return operation Fail closed – Select the actuator whose torque output (at a given instrument air pressure),at the end of spring stroke exceeds the torque required (+SF) to close the valve(Td). Also check that the Air endtorque of the actuator exceeds the torque required (+SF) to open the valve (Tb).
Spring return operation Fail Open – Select the actuator whose torque output (at a given instrument air pressure),at the end of air stroke exceeds the torque required (+SF) to close the valve (Tb). Also check that the Spring endtorque of the actuator exceeds the torque required (+SF) to open the valve (Td).
Warning Actuator air start torque and spring start torque must not exceed the valve stem torque limit.
