The patient was a 68-year- old female with morbid obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and a stage III pressure injury involving the buttock, sacrum, and coccyx. The patient’s medical history was significant for unilateral, non-traumatic lower extremity amputation secondary to complications from uncontrolled diabetes. Devitalized tissue from the pressure ulcer was removed by sharp debridement. The wound was cleansed and irrigated with Puracyn ® Plus Professional Formula Wound Irrigation Solution. This procedure occured every two hours in conjunction with turning the patient, as well as following a bowel movement. An absorbent pad was kept under the patient to catch excrement. Disposable undergarments were not used to preclude contamination of the wound with excrement. Additionally, advanced wound healing modalities, cellular and/or tissue-based products, antimicrobial or collagen dressings were not utilized in the episodes of care for this patient.
