Press Release Sherbrooke, September 3, 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Opening Reception of the exhibition of artist Myriam Yates on Wednesday, September 11 th , 2013 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop’s University. Exhibition Dates: September 11 to December 14, 2013 Artist: Myriam Yates Curator: Vicky Chainey Gagnon We are pleased to present this exhibition, featuring the work of visual and media artist Myriam Yates as part of the New Voices exhibition series, which gathers together video projections produced between 2005 and 2013. Often presented in diptychs or as a series, Yates’ work addresses questions that relate to public space, modernity and the ways in which images are produced. Yates is particularly interested in recreational areas and gathering places, especially those that are obsolete or in the process of disappearing, where new ties are being forged between people, modernity and architecture. The video installations featured in this exhibition include Racetrack Superstar Ghost (2011), Amphithéâtre (2010), A Space Between Mirrors (2010) and Occupants (2005), which document the shifting reality of a modern icon, the Hippodrome de Montréal, formerly one of the most important monuments of horse racing in North America. These installations demonstrate the building’s former glory, transformation throughout the years, and its gradual abandonment. These four videos are accompanied by the artist’s newest work, Mirage (2013), a video investigating the deserted Montréal-Mirabel International Airport. Artist Biography: Visual artist Myriam Yates’ photography-and-video-based practice tends towards a documentary approach, exploring the tenuous relationship between public and private space, following the shifting relationship between architecture and its inhabitants. Based in the Eastern Townships for the past four years, Yates’ holds two BFAs and an MFA from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her work has been shown at events such as Buenos Aires International Documentary Film Festival (2013), Kassel Dokfest (Kassel, Germany, 2012), Images Festival (Toronto, 2012), Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal (2007), Rencontres internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid (2007, 2012,
