Globe-trotting anthology earns Book of the Month nod from Brit Lit Review

Charles Degelman has gathered this multinational short fiction collection with authors and publish-ers donating net proceeds to the Nobel Prize-winning charity Doctors Without Borders.

Most of the creators of Voice from the Planet have never met. Communicating via e-mail and the Internet, we cast about for new work from far-flung and gifted writers, defined common ground, and improvised new digital and multi-lingual editing techniques to create the volume you are hold-ing in your hands.

Living fictionFor centuries, much of world literature has been published within particular cultural, national, or re-gional boundaries. The results are varied but often reinforced. For example, national interests limit most major English-language book prizes: the Pulitzer Prize for fiction goes strictly to American authors, preferably ones writing about American life; the Orange Prize is limited to U.K. authors; and only Commonwealth Country citizens are eligible for the Man Booker Prize.

Conversely, a rich canon of international literature has long been denied to many English-speaking readers, because the possibility of disseminating new writing across cultural, national, and language barriers was limited by geographical isolation, cultural centrism, and now-obsolete technology.

Enter the Information Age — the cyber apocalypse, a communication revolution. The publishers and authors involved in Voice from the Planet have set about to change all that by interacting via the world wide web in an effort to bring you a new fiction without borders, a contemporary, living fiction.

The cyber revolution has played an unprecedented part in the process, with authors and editors sending and downloading manuscripts, translations, and editors’ notes and revisions across oceans and continents, transactions that would have previously taken weeks or months to complete.

Join us in disseminating this intercontinental literature, a living fiction that uses new media to en-able authors, readers, and publishers alike to create and share contemporary literature that reflects today's rapidly changing planet.

Readers, reviewers, and critics can take part in Harvard Square Editions’ living fiction dialogue by commenting on Voice from the Planet stories using the authors’ digital contact information printed at the end each story (Please see contact information below.) or chatting on the web at www.harvardsquareeditions.org.
