Created in 1968, as a result of the decisive meeting between Robert Blanc – a son of the region and a high mountain guide - andRoger Godino – a mountain tourist development planner - the destination of les Arcs figures amongst the resorts which offer modernity, functionality and design.Charlotte Perriand was to play a key role in the resort’s new architecture which blends perfectly into the landscape and is adapted to the slope. As the soul of the group ofarchitects who were involved in this project, she fascinated people with her creative power and continued the resort’s architectural form which was established at its creation.
The legendary and atypical destination of les Arcs faces Mont Blanc and overlooks theUpper Tarentaise Valley. With its impudent, modern and imaginative style, it has been able to create its own identity combiningaltitude, freeski, fun, creativity andinnovation. Les Arcs’ 3 stated values are :Adventure at its very peak with its summit, the Aiguille Rouge, reaching up to analtitude of 3226 metres, its freerando courses, its freeski events, its 425km of pistes in thelinked ski area Paradiski and its activitiesaimed at thrill-seekers such as speedriding ...Accessibility, helping holidaymakers prepare their holiday in advance and, of course, with its international railway station and itsfunicular.
A sense of belonging through of its listed20th century architecture, its events to takepart in, the les Arcs property owners’ group ...
Comprising a valley location and 4 car-free « ski-in-ski-out » high altitude sites(Arc 2000, Arc 1950 The Village, Arc 1800 and Arc 1600) this destination offers 5 distinct styles to be explored at will … Arc 2000 : At the foot of the Aiguille Rouge (3226m), Arc 2000 is a direct gateway to the ski area. Ideal for sporty types and naturelovers. Arc 1950 The Village : This 5-star village 5* invites you on a getaway that blends enchantment with tradition! Perfect for enjoying apicturesque holiday with family or friends.
Arc 1800 : At the foot of the Aiguille Grive and facing Mont Blanc, Arc 1800 is the point of convergence of the ski area. The favourite meeting place for riders will also satisfy fans of lively and funky evenings.
Arc 1600 : This village was anarchitectural laboratory for Charlotte Perriand and her team. Modern and lively, it epitomises« the spirit of les Arcs » perfectly with itsfamily atmosphere.
Bourg SAinT MAurice : The valley location, nicknamed the « Capital of the Upper Tarentaise » welcomes holidaymakers from all over the world thanks to its international railwaystation and provides access to the ski area and Arc 1600 in 7 minutes by means of it funicular.

HiSTorY
1968 : ModeRNITy WoRKING oN BehALFoF NATURe Creating a ski resort out of nothing and constructing a setting that is functional and aesthetically pleasing and fulfil is the needs of this new growth in tourism is in itself anexciting project. The developer, Roger Godino and the young team of architects who worked on les Arcsresolutely aligned their project withmodernity. Contrary to the opinion of some detractors who saw in it a desire to « concrete over the mountains », under the benevolent authority of Charlotte Perriand, this intensely creative period was intended to work for the conservation of nature.
ChARLoTTe PeRRIANd ,A WoMAN oF CReATIoNCharlotte Perriand is a very well knownarchitect and designer in France.she worked on the building of the various sectors of Les Arcs for nearly 20 years. she was the soul of the group of architects who were fascinated by her creative power. Through keeping the group together andpreventing them from drifting it is surely thanks to her that the architectural linedefined at the outset endured throughout the construction of all the sectors. her concept of functionality, the « right move », practical shape, simple beauty withoutdesign and without added decoration, was to inspire a style of architecture conceived from the inside working outwards. By making these young architects start by putting themselves in the visitors’ shoes she overturned their professional reflexes and pushed them to go beyond the usual boundaries between town planning.
her work in Les Arcs is particularlyrecognisable for : • The raised balconies allowing light to flood into the apartments and to provide a wider outlook on the view • The work on the furnishings, every piece of which was conceived and designed byCharlotte Perriand • The innovative technical solutions such as the resin bathrooms made in a single block to minimise time and costs. An unknown process at the time ! • The integral kitchens opening onto the living area. Almost standard today, they were a real revolution 45 years ago ! • The work on the buildings’ gangways, given life by the solid colours of the wood and the lighting.
In 1927, Charlotte Perriand began acollaboration with Pierre jeanneret and his cousin Charles-edouard jeanneret-Gris,better known under the name of Le Corbusier, which was to last for 10 years. Le Corbusier was not slow to include her in his agency’s team putting her in charge of fitting outaccommodation. Le Corbusier’sarchitectural œuvre, consisting of 17 sites in7 different countries, was included in UNesCo’s World heritage in 2016.
GUIded ToURs oR hoW To exPLoRe The ARChITeCTURe oF Les ARCsProof that modernity can compromise with the mountains, nature and the town, the conglomerations of Arc 1600 and Arc 1800 were awarded the « 20th Century heritage » label in 2006. The Les Arcs Tourist officeorganises free guided tours to explore the architecture of Les Arcs. every week a guide offers visitors a guided walk round the various parts of the resort.

To maintain Les Arcs’ architectural principles, a survey into the holiday of the future for visitors to Les Arcs is being carried out in conjunction with young architects,teacher-researchers, artists and designersinvolved in research work and united under the banner « Agence Arcadienne ».The make-up of the Agence Arcadienne is supple and elastic to reflect the needs of its projects. The hard core comprises members of the ecole supérieure d’Art del’Agglomération d’Annecy et des Pays desavoie (esAAA) (Greater Annecy and the savoie Region higher school of Art) and the ecole supérieure d’Art et design desaint-etienne (esAdse)(saint-etienne higher school of Art and design). The Agency is linked to other researchprojects involving higher schools of art in the region, modernist architects and innovation. Its composition is flexible and elastic to meet the needs of each project : research cell, design cell, operational cell.
• The research cell : The aim of the research programme is to rethink the perception of mountain holidays in Les Arcs : livingconditions, practices and leisure and tosuggest some predicted scenarios connected to these themes. staying in an apartmentbuilding on site enables forecasts and concepts to be studied on the ground.• Design cell : This project enabled requests for designs and creations to be fulfilled through the involvement of two artists,designers/teachers with a view to giving shape to ideas thought up during time spent in the research cell’s building.• Operational cell : the last of the three cells project-manages property renovation projects
The different work themes tackled during periods spent in the residence :2013 : research into the transformation of the les Arcs cell2014 : research into scenarios involvingrenovating the interiors of les Arcs’ studios2015 : local workshop into public areas in les Arcs and client experience in the area2016 : research into consequences andpossible redevelopment due to climate change : the case of Arc 2000
