EUROPEAN OPEN PARA POWERLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS After the 2015 European Open in Eger (Hungary) and the World Championship in September 2017 in Mexico, the Handisport French Federation is now organizing the European Open Para Powerlifting Championships from May 25th to 29th 2018 at Berck-sur-Mer. This International Championship brings more than 208 athletes together from the European and non-European Elite. They will perform in the « Fiolet » sports complex (Berck-sur-Mer). This major event is an important continental step towards the World Championships in 2019 at Almaty, Kazakhstan and the World Paralympic Games in Tokyo, 2020. The program includes an opening ceremony on May 25th at 3:00PM, 6 days of competitions and 40 awarded titles. In the meantime, many sports’ animations, handicap awareness, official partners’ stands and surprises will be organized in a festive atmosphere in a sports village.

INTERVIEW WITH BARBARA SPORT DIRECTOR OF HANDISPORT WEIGHTLIFTING
• A feedback on Mexico’s performances?
The World Championships were amazing with an excellent organization and a total of 73 nations were here. Team France sent shivers down my spine. I am very satisfied with our weightlifters’ behavior. Of course, Souhad Ghazouani’s world title shows one more time her talent, hard work and passion for this sport but the rank of 2 out of our 3 men athletes in the World Top 8 is also a great performance.
Souhad Ghazouani, 35 years old, came back stronger than ever in the 73kg category. She took back her number one worldwide position after a difficult silver to accept last year in Rio. She won her second world title, after 2010, without any contestation with a 145kg lift that knocked out the other competitors. The 2012 Paralympics champion demonstrated that retirement wasn’t for today and that her hit list could grow again in the next coming years.
Patrick Ardon, 34 years old, another regular top level athlete, ranked 6th in his -54kg category with a 153kg lift. So closed to the 5th place, the French is still present in the biggest meetings and he is one of France weightlifting’s solid value.
He might have play a role model for Rafik Arabat who, at only 27 years and in a sport where maturity comes late, took a very encouraging 8th place in -88kg category with a 191kg lift. We shall hear again about the young man very soon.
Finally, we will note the semi-finalist position (16th) of Julien Avon Mbumé, 22 years old, in the -80kg category, who was just discovering the top level but was disturbed in his preparation.
• Could we hope results from the French Team?
Yes, because 3 French athletes are ranked in the top 8th worldwide. They are even unofficially on the European podium of these world championships.
• Which countries are the favorites for these European Championships?
As most of the time, the Eastern countries are the favorites, Turkey just misses out on being placed, but France also has its word to say.

• An update on weightlifting in France? Do you think that these European Championships could showcase para-powerlifting in France?
It is a very important meeting for us, as we are unknown from the general public. We have today about sixty members in our community. These European Championships should allow us to communicate on the beauty of this sport and its benefits, in order to attract more members. Obviously, regarding the performance aspect, the French team must be efficient but this event also needs to be considered as an open day for weightlifting. I dare to hope that there will be a before and an after for our sport after this European championships.
• Perform at home: source of stress or motivation?
In order to make these Berck-sur-Mer European Championships a celebration and a real spotlight on Team France at its greatest shape, the organization of preparation training will be done on site, in order to steep in the place. The job of the staff and I will be to put our athletes in confidence by giving them good vibes and the right well-being automatics on a daily basis. Such a major event in France will allow highlighting the weightlifting for disabled. For the Team France, that will be a mix of emotions between stress, anxiety and the joy of perform in front of families, close relations and friends.

POWERLIFTING FOR DISABLED
PRESENTATION Wrongly called weightlifting (name used for all movements practiced standing; snatch and clean-and-jerk) the only movement opened to handicapped persons is the bench press. It was a rehabilitation discipline after war and a sport discipline since 1960 in France. It imposed itself as a basic sport for physically handicapped persons. This discipline is practiced with an adapted material and is equally addressed to athletes whether they are standing or in a wheelchair. REGULATIONS While practicing para powerlifting, athletes compete lying (on their back) on a specially adapted bench. Athletes’ official assistants put the bar to the height of the competitor’ stretched arms. In two minutes, the athlete needs to perform his try that is split as the following: lower the bar at the chest level, make it steady during a short lapse of time, and then push it up horizontally until the complete extension of the arms. Competitions are open to women and men, in categories established according to their body weight (10 categories total), from less than 49kg to more than 107kg for men, and less than 41kg to more than 86kg for women. PARTICIPANTS’ DISABILITY > Paraplegic, tetraplegic and similar > Inferior members amputee and similar > Person with a cerebral motor disability and similar, non-Paralympics > Nonsighted, partially-sighted person, non-Paralympics MATERIAL Utilization of a bench certified with necessary supports.

HANDISPORT FRENCH FEDERATION “Handisport” is a French word created to describe disability sports, in other words, sports for handicapped persons. The sport association of France’s mutilates has been created in 1954. Ever since, the sport movement « Handisport » kept evolving. Nowadays, the Handisport French Federation, is recognized as public utility. It is working for the promotion and development of physical and sporting activities, for leisure or competitions purposes, for persons having a motor, physical or sensory handicap. KEY NUMBERS More than 36 000 members, 60 000 persons practicing, 1400 clubs or sections, around one hundred regional and department committees. VALUES & IDENTITY Our Federation, member of CPSF and CNOSF, is carrying a message, a society model, and a certain idea of human being, with strong values that give sense to our action. Our singularity: taking into consideration the specificities of the person practicing, to make him benefit of a sportive offer which is secured and adapted to his capacities. Autonomy: by including sport’s benefits in a handicapped person lifestyle allows this latter to develop his physical capacities and improve his autonomy. Accomplishment, through sport, to improve self-esteem and better apprehend his place within the society, offering the member, according to his aspiration and his rhythm, an adapted involvement within the movement (performance, pleasure, conviviality, framing, refereeing…) MORE THAN 20 SPORTS FOR LEISURE OR PERFORMANCE Athletics, badminton (deaf), wheelchair-basketball, boccia, bowling (deaf), blind soccer, cycling, fencing, football (deaf), electric wheelchair-foot, goalball/torball, powerlifting, natation, subaquatic diving, hiking, wheelchair-rugby, blowpipe, alpine skiing and snowboarding, Nordic ski, boules (deaf), table tennis, archery… In line with public expectations, the Federation offers a wide choice of leisure activities, discoveries and introductions, accessibility to different type of handicap, without performance notion, for pleasure or need of escape. YOUTH & DEVELOPMENT The Federation offers to youth a diversified offer within 4 clusters: Development: to promote the development of scholar and extracurricular practice Discovery: to pass on sport passion through manifestations allowing discovery of a leisure practice (discovery days, introduction to sport practice, sporting holidays…) Pre-competition: to lead young sportspersons towards a competitive practice, particularly through big events and national gathering (Grand Prix, “Jeux de l’Avenir”, “promising youth” training…) Performance: to fully commit to a competitive practice, towards performance. TOP-LEVEL The Handisport French Federation includes around 250 sportspersons registered on top-level lists that are participating in international championships. Best participants participate to Paralympic Games every four years. FORMATION The National Handisport Formation Centre created in 2007 by the Federation, aims to improve the framing of sport practice for handicapped persons. Many formation trainings for sports managers, detection and top-level are organized, as well as formations for companies regarding their politic of insertion for colleagues in handicapped situation. The « Pas de Calais » Handisport Department Committee Created in 1977, the « Pas de Calais » Handisport Department Committee, ruled by 1901 law, is a devolved organ of the Handisport French Federation. It closely collaborates with its Regional committee.
The board gathers 28 clubs and Handisport sections that count more than 550 members around its motto: “A sport for everyone, a successful bet”.
ITS VALUES
To give the opportunity to any physically or sensory handicapped person to practice a leisure or competition sport whatever his age, difference, sex and origins are.
ITS MISSIONS To promote and develop the sport for disabled in the department in order to give the possibility to any handicapped person to access a sport of his/her choice and close to home.
To spot training needs, inform on existing formations, participate in the regional formation program.
ITS OBJECTIVES
To assert the committee’s position within the department, the region, the country and internationally.
To create a consistency within its actions, an outcome from exchanges, a rallying of the means so that everybody feels concern about Handisport’s politic.
Make its activities durable so that clubs can live and develop and for the committee to assume its social role by getting close to its clubs and members.
HOW ? By rallying human and financial means: to develop partnerships in the department, region and nationally…
By promoting the committee’s activities, by being present during events or public manifestation, by organizing introduction actions, by intervene in primary school, high-school, university etc.
Facilitating the clubs’ welcoming mission by simplifying membership procedures by providing communication tools, helping creating projects and giving regular information.
By highlighting actions towards disadvantaged public by organizing information sessions during conventions or promotional days.
The committee works on the assumption that sport is a project and a citizenship service that must allow social integration by encouraging diversity, improve the society opinion on Handisport, and show its benefits on health and physical and social independence’s protection.

The « Nord Pas de Calais » Handisport Regional Committee The NORD PAS DE CALAIS HANDISPORT REGIONAL COMMITTEE, ruled by law 1901, belongs to the Handisport French Federation. It is the unifying and advisory component of the regional Handisport movement.
It gathers more than 1600 members, 89 clubs and 8 athletes progressing at the highest level mentioned in the Sport Ministry list. 6 of them represented our region during the Paralympic Games of Rio.
Its main objective is to make reachable the practice of sports to the greatest number of persons being sensory and/or physically handicapped.
The Committee is responsible for the proper sports’ functioning for these persons.
Through 29 disciplines for leisure, competition and out in the country, the Handisport Regional Committee and its structure offer an adapted project to each members and their pathology, needs and wishes.
ITS EXPERTISE IS MULTIPLE AND VARIED AND ARE ORGANISED AROUND FOUR APPROACHES:
• To create an accessible and progressive offer for practicing competition for everybody: from new members to experienced athletes, independently of the handicap’s level, incorporating the equipment accessibility issue, as well as problem of security and classification within the department and region.
• To promote, develop and structure sporting practice within the « Nord Pas de Calais » in order for members to practice in the best possible conditions: structure, supervising, training, sporting equipment. To help clubs to structure and develop themselves by accompanying them. Host regional sporting coordination cell gathering the CDH.
• To train professionals to educational psychology aspects linked to handicap, to pathology that might be encountered, to Handisport movement and to sporting discipline for people having visual and physical impairment.
• Facilitate athletes in a handicapped situation improvement, support top-level athletes that represent sporting excellence.
With a view to make its projects and objectives deeper and to give a new dimension to its sporting politic, the Handisport “Nord Pas de Calais” Regional Committee leans on a skillful Regional Technical Team and development center: the main objective being to support the different regional teams, athletes and the talent detection.

« Pas de Calais » Department
Eighth French department by its population (1,5 million inhabitants), the “Pas-de-Calais” is also one of the youngest.
It is composed of eight territories offering diverse landscapes to its inhabitants and to visitors crossing it. Rural, coastal, urban the « Pas-de-Calais » department is also and above all an historical land. A long and boisterous History from which it pulls its strengths and values: bravery, peace, benevolence and equality. These are values at the center of Department Council and its elects’ commitment. Community of human and territory solidarity, the department daily support its inhabitants. Childhood, Family,Elder. Secondary School, culture, environment Infrastructures, important projects, memory… In order to conduct its mandatory and volunteering politics, the Department Council has for 2018 a budget of 1,74 billion euros. It can also count on its 8000 agents from the public service and on its numerous partners that share the same objectives and ambition for the territory. It is particularly true for sport and handicap area. The question of equal access to disciplines and services particularly urge. It’s a citizenship and social stake that the Department and its president, Jean-Claude Leroy, particularly care about. It is also an opportunity to promote and develop what it is called the “live well together”. By supporting its sporting events, the Department council also adds value to the region, the organizers’ know-how and their dynamisms. By particularly accompanying its Handisport meetings, the community is loyal to its commitment toward a real inclusive approach of sports. The Haut-de-France Region
The Haut-de-France region supports the powerlifting Paralympics’ top-level for the European Championships
The Hauts-de-France region is a partner to the World Para Powerlifting European Championships which is happening at Berck-sur-Mer from May 25th to 30th, 2018. One more occasion to confirm its commitment towards big sporting events as territory attractive mean. ENCOURAGE HANDISPORT PRACTICE From wheelchair basketball to athletic but also horse-riding, archery, swimming, fencing or wheelchair rugby, the Hauts-de-France region supports its sportspersons affected by physical or sensory handicap.
Backed by 2700 members split in more than 120 clubs, it encourages Handisport practice in every form. It accompanied the International wheelchair-football training in Amiens in February 2017, the Boccia French Championships in Calais in March 2017 and the Wheelchair Tennis International Tournament in Amiens last October, among others.
Beyond the exceptional athletes’ physical performance that will participate, this European meeting is also the occasion to raise awareness among the general public to different forms of handicap in order to aim to a “Sport Together” approach. A REGION RICH OF ATHLETES
The region is proud to have many medal winners among its athletes. We will notice, for example, Souhad Ghazouani’s results, mentioned earlier. During the Rio Paralympic Games, Martin Farineau has finished 7th in Para-Canoe and Christophe Tanche 15th in target shooting. Another example, in athletic, Gregory Fiems won the silver medal in the Charléty National Youth Challenge and José Acebo finished 1st at 6Kg shot put during the Indoor French Championships at Nantes last year. Talking about basket-ball, the regional team « Espoirs » ranked first during the French Championships finale. Centre Athletic Powerlifting Centre Berck’s Club Founded in 1981 by Jean Claude Lapostolle, the Centre Athletic Powerlifting Centre Berck-sur-Mer club has more than 500 members. The club offers a leisure and competitive practice for Powerlifting and Athletic Strengths. The club’s powerlifting group is efficient on a national scale. Medalists at the Elite France Championships, several federal titles and a National 2 team during last season. The Athletic-Strengths group also is performing well: 6 world champion titles in +40 years old category. The club organizes many Powerlifting and Athletic-Strengths France Championships. A room is fully furnished to welcome formations of all types: varied equipment, normed, competition’s bar and weights, reinforcement equipment for muscles development etc.
