1. Fact SheetVossloh-Schwabe (VS)

Vossloh-Schwabe became a member of the Japanese Panasonic Group in 2002. But the history of modern-day Vossloh-Schwabe Deutschland GmbH reaches back to the year 1919. The previously independent manu-facturer of lampholders for incandescent lamps Vossloh, located in the German town of Lüdenscheid (North-Rhine Westphalia), merged with the company Hermann Schwabe GmbH, located in Urbach (Baden-Württemberg), in 1987. Vossloh-Schwabe was subsequently taken over by the Panasonic Corporation in 2002. Vossloh-Schwabe Deutschland GmbH is responsible for the lighting market in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa / Oceania and America.

2. ReorientationVossloh-Schwabe (VS)

(Short Version)

Vossloh-Schwabe (VS) is part of the LED revolution

From one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lighting components to an innovative full-range provider of high-quality lighting technology systems – the modified company brand logo serves to symbolise this future-pointing strategic reorientation.

With LED technology constituting a quantum leap to a new lighting era, Vossloh-Schwabe Deutschland GmbH has undertaken a strategic reorienta-tion and extended its range of products and services. The company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of components for lighting technology and looks back on a history of almost 100 years. Meanwhile Vossloh-Schwabe has also specialised in turnkey LED and light management system solutions. The new orientation is reflected in a modified company logo, whose pale yellow design element symbolises the advent of a bright technological future.“The lighting market is currently undergoing the biggest technological shift in its history. The developmental steps taken in the field of LEDs and in intelligent lighting are progressing at a rapid pace and with ever shorter product lifecycles.”, explained Setsuo Mizusawa, Chairman of the VS Board of Management. And Managing Director Klaus Breisch further commented: “With the aim of providing our partners in the lighting industry with the best possible support in this process, we are evolving into a provider of LED and light management system solutions.” This means development and certification of customer-specific solutions, including optimally matched LED modules, drivers, heat sinks, lenses, reflectors, control systems or even entire luminaire systems.Vossloh-Schwabe’s manufacturing facilities for LED solutions are located in the company’s own plant in Svilajnac, Serbia. “This guarantees we can provide our partners with flexible and low-cost deliveries from within Europe,” said Klaus Breisch, “while at the same time satisfying the extremely high quality standards of the Panasonic Group.”, added Setsuo Mizusawa.

Vossloh-Schwabe (VS) is part of the LED revolution

From one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lighting components to an innovative full-range provider of high-quality lighting technology sys-tems. The modified company brand logo symbolises this future-pointing strategic reorientation.

Efficient, eco-friendly, versatile and blessed with a long service life, LED technology constitutes a quantum leap to a new era of lighting. Vossloh-Schwabe is part of the most dramatic shift in the history of light. The German company numbers among the world’s leading manufacturers of components for lighting technology with a history of almost 100 years. VS has undertaken a strategic reorientation and extended its range of products and services beyond the mere production of components. As a full-range provider of energy-efficient LED and light management systems, the com-pany facilitates numerous innovative applications. Whether energy-efficient and eco-friendly lighting for offices, schools, kindergartens, retail outlets, trade fairs or the furniture industry is needed or for outdoor areas such as streets, stadia and buildings, VS can provide individually tailored, turnkey solutions of the highest quality for any application. The new corporate orientation is now also reflected in a modified company logo, whose pale yellow design element serves to symbolise the advent of a bright technological future.Vossloh-Schwabe Deutschland GmbH became a member of the Japanese Panasonic Group in 2002. However, the production of LEDs goes back to 1979. By now, light emitting diodes (LEDs) have established themselves in many areas of public and private life. Some examples: in the medical field, LEDs are put to therapeutic use to deal with pain and depression. In the field of animal husbandry, LEDs serve to increase animal wellbeing and so help to improve yield. And LEDs can have a positive influence on human biorhythms. Field studies conducted by Vossloh-Schwabe in the area of street lighting have shown that energy costs can be significantly reduced after conversion to LEDs. And last but not least: in residential settings, the surprising number of design options provided by LEDs turns occupants into creative lighting designers. >

3. Multi-zone Sensor

Multi-zone Human Occupancy Sensor

At the 2014 Light + Building, Vossloh-Schwabe (VS) will be presenting an efficient multi-zone human occupancy sensor – a collaborative project with an Austrian start-up company.

This optical sensor is not only capable of differentiating between humans and machinery, but also features a field of detection that is easily large enough to cover an area that would usually require five or six conventional devices. Vossloh-Schwabe (VS) will be presenting this multi-zone sensor as one of its innovations at the Light + Building in Frankfurt from 30.03. to 04.04.2014. This new technological development was created in cooperation with the Austrian start-up, Illumination Network Systems GmbH, Vienna, and Vossloh-Schwabe Deutschland GmbH, an innovative manufacturer of lighting technology with almost 100 years of experience. Vossloh-Schwabe – which became a member of the Japanese Panasonic Group in 2002 and is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lighting components – has by now established itself as a full-range provider of energy-efficient LED and light management systems. One field of application for the new VS sensor is logistics and warehousing: by modelling the new system on optical recognition technology common to modern cameras, a sensor was created that is capable of recognising when a person or a group of people enters a warehouse. Depending on the respective settings, lighting will then be switched on for several minutes in the respective detection zone, explained engineer Helmut Doll, Head of Marketing at Vossloh-Schwabe. In addition, the sensor is capable of measuring incident daylight in every zone and then dimming down the artificial lighting to suit.Doll: “This lowers both energy and investment costs. Whereas before it would have been necessary to install a separate sensor for every warehouse zone, the new sensor development features a detection radius that is large enough to mean only a single central sensor needs to be installed to cover all zones.” > >

3. Multi-zone Sensor

The public road network is a further area of application in which the multi-zone sensor makes perfect sense. Helmut Doll, engineer, explained: “During less frequented night-time hours, lighting at a pedestrian crossing can, for instance, be reduced to a cost-saving minimum. The sensor would immediately detect a person approaching a zebra crossing and would then increase lighting levels while the person crosses the road. This provi-des public authorities with an opportunity to reap significant cost savings while at the same time ensuring safety.”

4. Light + Building Trade Fair

VS Innovations at the Light + Building

Vossloh-Schwabe (VS) is among the companies driving LED technology forward – and is presenting innovations at the world’s leading lighting technology fair in Frankfurt.

The Light + Building in Frankfurt, which is held every two years, counts as the world’s leading lighting technology fair. Key visitor groups include architects, interior designers, designers, planners and engineers just as much as tradespeople, retailers and industrial clients. From 30th March to 4th April 2014, around 2,300 companies will be exhibiting their innovations to a global audience from the fields of lighting, electrical engineering, building and facility automation as well as software for the construction sector. The motto of the Light + Building is energy efficiency, while the main topic is “People and Light”. The fair serves to showcase the special effect of lighting on the human organism, human health, performance and wellbeing.

One of the fair’s renowned exhibitors is Vossloh-Schwabe (VS). Following its structural reorientation, the well-established company will now be presenting numerous innovations at the trade fair. Solutions for reducing a building’s energy consumption while at the same time increasing living comfort are just one example. Apart from products for private use, VS is also displaying innovative lighting technology solutions for department stores, supermarkets, office spaces and production facilities as well as for large-scale facilities such as airports, hotels and shopping centres. True to being a “single-source provider”, Vossloh-Schwabe is an established full-range provider of energy-efficient LED and light management system solutions.

Although a lot of exhibition space was already dedicated to LEDs (light emitting diodes) at the Light + Building in the past, the floor space was no longer sufficient to present all LED-related companies, as a result of which a second LED hall has now been added.

5. The EV charging station of the future

Vehicle charging at the lamp

Streetlight management system and EV charging station

Street lighting systems are mostly powered using their own separate supply grid, with lighting being centrally switched on or off at a distribution board in response to signals received from an astronomical-clock timer or a light sensor. Attaching a charging station for electrically powered vehicles to such a network would mean that power would only be available when lighting is switched on. However, using the VS Smart Night controller coincidentally solves this problem since its powerline controller activates lighting at every single lamp pole. As a result, the lighting network can be supplied with power on a permanent basis, thus removing any limitations for also using it to provide charging stations for e-vehicles.The combination of both systems enables huge energy savings in street lighting and at the same time makes it possible to use existing infrastructure for the purpose of charging electrically powered cars in the future – and without the need for major investment.

Advantages

Light ManagementEfficient control for all outdoor lighting systems.

Infrastructural SynergyIntegrating cost-effective ubitricity system sockets straight into lamp poles also makes it possible to create a widespread public network of EV char-ging stations at an affordable price.

Electricity MeterThe mobile electricity meter contained in the ubitricity charging cable serves to gauge the power drawn to recharge a car‘s batteries and transfers the gathered data to a standardised billing system.

Settling Power BillsThe data transferred by ubitricity are then used as a basis for the invoice the respective user receives from the power utility company of their choice.

Load ManagementOptimal use of the cable grid with a network of EV charging stations that is dimensioned to satisfy actual needs.

Shop lighting

LUGA Shop Pearl White

Based on established COB technology with a ceramic PCB, LUGA Shop Pearl White is the most recent LED product made by Vossloh-Schwabe and the lighting star of fashion stores.

Brilliant colours – comparable to those rendered with the kind of tried-and-tested CHI ceramic-burner technology commonly found in shop lighting – coupled with a remarkably high light output of up to 150 lm/W and no more than a minimal change in the module’s photometric values over the course of its 50,000-hour service life (L90/B10) all go to make LUGA Shop Pearl White a highly efficient and effective means of illuminating fashion items. With a CRI (colour rendering index) of more than 90, the module ensures that the colours of illuminated products are shown off to best effect – and serves to turn fashion into lifestyle.

LUGA Shop 2014

Higher efficiency for shop and furniture store lighting.

One of the golden rules of shop lighting is ensuring that products, pre-sentations and lighting all complement each other. The more suitable the respective luminaires are for their specific tasks, the fewer luminaires will be needed. In the interest of minimising investment and operating costs, it is therefore important to set logical perception points. The name of the game is to lower wattages while at the same time increasing light output. In addition, excellent colour rendering values take on special meaning, since they serve to faithfully represent materials and colours to consumers.
