Americana, Bluegrass and Acoustic Roots Music www.ASuddenTradition.com Photo by Gregory Noack of Untitled Designs http://thinknoack.com/ A Sudden Tradition is a five-member Portland-area Americana band performing bluegrass, folk, old time, country, standards, contemporary, and original songs—all with that traditional acoustic roots sound. Performances are upbeat and wide-ranging, offering a barn-burning instrumental one moment, followed by a compelling traditional ballad or perhaps a feel-good western tune. The group is strong on vocal harmony as well as instrumental skill, including guitar, banjo, upright bass, piano, and fiddle. Lead singer Jess Hoylman delivers a surprising range of vocal texture and emotion, moving from innocent wonder in one song to confident power in the next. When people hear Jess sing, they stop in their tracks and listen. Dennis Zelmer holds the flat-picking acoustic guitar spot. Completely self- taught, Dennis has been a lifelong performer with bands spanning country, jazz standards, acoustic rock, blues, folk and bluegrass. Suzanne Chimenti is usually found on banjo or piano but has a few other toys in her bag of tricks as well. Suzanne majored in vocal music and music education at Portland State and has enjoyed a thirty-year teaching and performing career.

A Sudden Tradition is a five-member Portland-area Americana band performing bluegrass, folk, old time, country, standards, contemporary, and original songs—all with that traditional acoustic roots sound.

Completely self-taught, Dennis has been a lifelong performer with bands spanning country, jazz standards, acoustic rock, blues, folk and bluegrass.

Suzanne Chimenti is usually found on banjo or piano but has a few other toys in her bag of tricks as well. Suzanne majored in vocal music and music education at Portland State and has enjoyed a thirty-year teaching and performing career.

Gary Schuh is a champion fiddle player, garnering state, regional, and national titles. Gary is sought after by musical artists across the U.S. for live performance and studio recording work.

On upright acoustic bass, Nancy Christie is well known in the Portland bluegrass scene. Her straight-ahead playing style brings the music to life and punches it up in just the right places.

The combined performing experience of the band’s players spans hundreds of shows from festival main stage and company events to farmers markets, weddings, and other family celebrations. Upbeat and family friendly—light-hearted and just plain fun—that’s what you get with A Sudden Tradition!
