PRESS RELEASE
• For its 13th edition, PAD London returns to Berkeley Square
with a refined combination of contemporary and modern design, glass
and ceramics, tribal art and antiquities, modern art and
jewellery.
• 68 international galleries will surprise the most curious and
discerning collectors with works across diverse disciplines and
periods.
• 14 countries will be represented, spanning 4 continents:
Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.
• A total of 11 first-time exhibitors will join this edition,
enriching the depth and scope of the fair’s offering.
NEWCOMERS
The rich narratives and craftsmanship of South African design
make their mark at PAD London for the first time with the arrival
of Southern Guild (Cape Town), Africa’s foremost gallery for
collectible design. The gallery unveils a new body of work by
celebrated ceramicist Andile Dyalvane, created as part of his 2019
artist residency in St. Ives, as well as debuting new designs by
Justine Mahoney, Stanislaw Trzebinski, Conrad Hicks, Porky Hefer
and Zizipho Poswa. This presentation shines with the Nwa-Mulamula’s
chaise, the very first furniture piece created by Rich Mnisi, one
of South Africa’s rising fashion talents.
Todd Merrill Studio (New York) curates an immersive environment
composed of new console tables by British designer Marc Fish, from
his nature-inspired Ethereal Series, a dramatic metal textured
cabinet by Jean-Luc Le Mounier, and a striking mural of pigmented
concrete tiles by young American designer Brecht Wright Gander.
Directed by architects Jacobo Valentí and Luis Sendino, Side
Gallery (Barcelona) uncovers a refined selection of 20thC Latin
American furniture, celebrating Brazilian design heroes Joaquim
Tenreiro and Sergio Rodrigues. These are complimented by the
vibrant glass and lamp designs of contemporary talents, Julie
Richoz and Sabine Marcelis. Wa Design (Paris) showcases elegant
works that reflect their passion for the historic synergy between
Japanese and French design, focused on the pure lines that
influenced early modern design. Standout pieces include a rare
free-form sofa by Taichiro Nakai from 1955 and an important 1930s
bamboo chair by Ubunji Kidokoro, a design that later influenced
Charlotte Perriand’s conception of the famous Long Chair. Joining
the 20thC design and decorative arts exhibitors, Portuondo Paris
(Paris, Madrid) brings a dramatic pair of brutalist brass lamps by
Henri Fernandez and exquisite 1980s cabinet by Piero Fornasetti,
while post-war French ceramics is introduced with the arrival of
renowned specialist Thomas Fritsch-Artrium (Paris).
Four new galleries enrich the impressive roster of jewellery
designers showcased at the fair. Taffin (New York), known for its
distinct designs and use of unusual materials, debuts a series of
new creations composed of steel, oxidised silver, carved jade and
characteristically vibrant ceramics. Joining the fair from Hong
Kong, Taiwanese-born high jewellery artist Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie
(Paris, Hong Kong, Taipei, New York) exhibits imaginative creations
with shimmering colours and precious details. Fabio Salini (London,
Rome) displays a new set of his signature illusionary jewels. Using
highly polished gold and titanium, he creates mirrored surfaces
that reflect vibrant stone and suggest voluminous shapes.
Boghossian (Geneva, Gstaad, London, Hong Kong), the prestigious
sixth-generation family of jewellers, conceives an extraordinary
journey through their east-meets-west inspired high jewellery
collection, made of precious gemstones with breath-taking
colours.

Luxury watches are making a first entry into the fair with The
Beautiful Watch (Paris, London, Monaco) showcasing a selection of
remarkable vintage luxury watches.
NOTABLE PREMIERES
Carpenters Workshop Gallery (London, Paris, New York, San
Francisco) premieres a monumental new chandelier by Spanish
designer Nacho Carbonell, set in dialogue with a selection of debut
pieces including Rick Owens’ striking Double Bubble sofa.
Priveekollektie Contemporary Art | Design (Heusden, The
Netherlands) unveils new sculptural lamps in alabaster stone by
Amarist Studio. Aptly titled Bomb Love, the designs highlight the
studio’s provocative focus on social and political themes. Galerie
Bsl (Paris) introduces new tables from Chinese-French duo Studio
MVW’s Jinye series, made of Patagonian quartzite, as well as
elaborate lighting by Pia Maria Raeder from her Sea Anemones
series, composed of bronze and natural beech rods. Gallery Fumi
(London) places the spotlight on Italian designer and master of
traditional marquetry Francesco Perini with his new Incon-tro Rug
alongside Sam Orlando Miller’s new and most ambitious light
sculpture to date, created with jade green mirror and hand cut
bronze. Faithful to his ongoing exploration of traditional Italian
craft techniques, Achille Salvagni (London) devotes his stand to
Murano glass and premieres a new version of his iconic Spider
chandelier, as well as a one-of-a-kind bar cabinet made from ivory
parch-ment encrusted with black Murano glass details.
Mouvements Modernes (Paris) curates a playful booth
incorporating collectible crafts, notably new sculptural designs by
Danish ceramicist Turi Heisselberg Pedersen, who examines the
inherent character and textural freshness of clay, and a remarkable
glass sculpture Gravity Ripples by the celebrated artist Jeremy
Maxwell Wintrebert. Karen Swami (Paris) brings light to her latest
ceramic creations, revealing exceptional mastery of the Japanese
art of Kintsugi, the technique of mending fissures and cracks in
pottery with pure gold.
Objet d’Emotion by Valery Demure (London) returns with new
jewellery collection launches for Alice Cicolini, continuing her
focus on the enamel traditions of Persia, new designs by Melanie
Georgacopoulos, reimagining the endless aesthetic possibilities of
the pearl, and exclusive new pieces by Jacqueline Rabun, carrying
her passion for organic and architectural forms. Elisabetta
Cipriani (London) celebrates the gallery’s ten-year anniversary
with highlights from a decade of major artist collaborations,
alongside brand-new projects by Ai Weiwei, Chiharu Shiota, Sophie
Whettnall and Kendell Geers.

PATRICK PERRIN AND THE HISTORY OF PAD
PAD Paris and PAD London were founded by Patrick Perrin to
support quality in the arts.
Patrick Perrin has been immersed in the art market since his
youth. After studying art history in London and working for
Christie’s in New York, he opened a gallery with his father located
on the place Beauvau in Paris, specialising in 18th Century French
Furniture. He nurtured a passion for Old Master drawings and
created the Salon du Dessin in Paris in 1991. Perrin opened his own
gallery on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris in 1991 and
published a collection of six monographs entitled ‘Les Cahiers du
Mobilier’ (furniture notebooks) dedicated to prominent cabinet
makers in the 18th century.
In 1997 Patrick Perrin created what has since become one of the
most anticipated cultural events in France, PAD Paris. Originally
known as the Pavillon des Antiquaires et des galeries d’art (the
Pavilion of Antique dealers and art galleries), the fair is
inspired by the cabinets de curiosités and brings together
international gallery owners as well as young promising dealers,
whose area of expertise covers the 18th,19th, 20thC.
Ten years later in 2007, PAD London was established on Hanover
Square and dedicated to post-war and contemporary design and
decorative arts. The following year the fair moved to its current
location on Berkeley Square and in 2009, in the same spirit as the
PAD Paris fair, incorporated modern art as a primary genre.
Today PAD London continues to be an unmissable fixture in the
international art and design calendar. The fair cultivates
eclecticism, authenticity and connoisseurship with unparalleled
passion and flair. Its refined setting is designed to inspire
collectors, art consultants, museum experts, interiors specialists,
design practitioners and the public, making PAD the only fair of
its kind.

RUINART PAD LONDON DESIGN PRIZEThis year Ruinart will be Patron
of the PAD Prize for the first time. The prize will be presented in
the categories of Best Contemporary Design, Best 20th Century
Design and Best Stand by a prestigious judging panel including

HIGHLIGHTS
MARCILHAC FRANCE
Jean Royère, Pair of wall lights, circa 1950Jean Royère was a
French designer and a key figure of the avant-garde in the 1950s.
He became known for his originality of style, bright colours,
organic shapes and precious materials. After successfully
establishing his artistic practice in France, he also worked on
commissions in Jordan and Iran. Among his patrons were King Farouk,
King Hussein of Jordan, and the Shah of Iran. This pair of
wall-lights dates from that very same period in the 1950s and is
made of original red lacquered metal with paper lampshades.
WA DESIGN FRANCE
Ubunji Kidokoro, Rare bamboo armchair, 1937 Ubunji Kidokoro was
one of the great cabinetmakers in Japan during the 1930´s. In
Japan, chairs became popular with the Westernization of lifestyle
that had been encouraged by government policy since the late
nineteenth century. Kidokoro designed this rare bamboo and brass
chair in 1937, famous for its elasticity and cantilevered form,
effortlessly hovering mid-air. Kidokoro’s work was stocked at
Mitsukoshi’s Furniture Design and had a strong influence on future
domestic and international designers including French designer and
architect Charlotte Perriand.
YVES ET VICTOR GASTOU FRANCE
François Cante-Pacos, Cyclades Cabinet open, circa 1970 Made in
the 1970’s by French painter and sculptor François Cante-Pacos,
this two-doored rectangular cabinet is constructed from walnut wood
with red lacquer and brass opening handles. The base of the piece
is covered in anthracite metal. François Cante-Pacos has been known
to express a lot in his design and strike the viewer’s imagination
with very little. The playful Cyclade cabinet, with its smooth
surfaces, supple volumes and curved lines, has indeed been referred
to as evoking the full hips of a mother goddess.
JOUSSE ENTREPRISE FRANCE
Pierre Jeanneret group, Kangoo chair, circa 1960 This rare
Kangoo chair is a remarkable artefact of modernist history,
entirely finished in rich teak wood and wicker cane. Swiss painter,
architect, and designer Pierre Jeanneret studied architecture at
the École des Beaux-Arts and subsequently set up an architectural
practice in Paris with his cousin, Le Corbusier, in 1923. Between
1927 and 1940, Jeanneret and Le Corbusier collaborated with French
designer Charlotte Perriand and together they created a number of
now-iconic furniture designs, which were characterized by
minimalist and geometric forms fabricated in industrial materials
like tubular steel.

MATTHIEU RICHARD FRANCE
Mathieu Matégot, The suspension model Satellite, circa 1953
Self-taught Hungarian-French designer, architect and artist Mathieu
Matégot began his career creating window displays for the Folies
Bergère and the Galerie Lafayette department store in Paris. During
the war he was captured by the German forces in France and
requisitioned to work in a factory where he learnt to work with
sheet metal and consequently set up his Parisian workshop to begin
creating his signature furniture designs. He was most famous for
his ground-breaking material and technique, which he named
Rigitulle, where metal tubing is combined with perforated metal
sheets. Like fabric, Rigitulle could be bent, folded and shaped to
give the furniture he designed transparency, weightlessness and
everlasting modernity. This suspension light illustrates his
virtuosity with colour and simple clear forms.
MEUBLES ET LUMIÈRES FRANCE
Michel Boyer, Rare lamp Bulb, circa 1972 This elegant and rare
lamp by Michel Boyer was edited by Verre Lumière. The Parisian
lighting firm opened in 1968 during the heyday of iconic French and
Italian designers like Maria Pergay, Gio Ponti, and Michel Boyer. A
bellwether for modernism, Verre Lumière was a convergence of
craftsmanship and artistry. Founded by master glass worker Max
Ingrand, it gave designers the freedom to create lamps that went
beyond the confines of functionality. Michel Boyer is a french
designer and decorator whose creations play with the full and the
empty, using materials such as stainless steel, plywood and
fiberglass. Michel Boyer’s work oscillates between luxury and
harmony, audacity and tradition and helped to set the new standards
of design in the 70’s.
ALAIN MARCELPOIL FRANCE
André Sornay, Cabinet in Indian rosewood, circa 1929 André
Sornay was a French modernist furniture designer who developed
revolutionary fabrication techniques and new ideas about furniture
material. This unique cabinet is made of Indian rosewood with a
base of solid mahogany. With five doors, it has adjustable shelves
and a central glass door with metal framing. Sornay’s striking
cabinet recalls the form of an ancient monolith, articulated
however by distinctly modern elements of architectural design. The
partitions and shelves imbue the piece with a strong geometric
clarity.
CHASTEL-MARÉCHAL FRANCE
Joaquim Tenreiro, Abstrata table, circa 1965Joaquim Tenreiro is
the ultimate founding father of modernist Brazilian furniture and
design. His exquisitely crafted pieces evoke a refined coexistence
of traditional values and modern aesthetics, strongly bound by the
Brazilian cultural milieu. From his first pieces of furniture
through to his last, Tenreiro reveals his intense relationship with
wood, his attention to texture and a pleasing harmony of volumes.
This rare table was specifically designed for a building located in
front of Arpoador beach in Rio de Janeiro, which was entirely
decorated by Tenreiro in the 1960s.

THOMAS FRITSCH – ARTRIUM FRANCE
Georges Jouve, Bird lamp, 1953Georges Jouve is considered one of
the most important ceramic artists of the 20th Century. Known for
his unique formal techniques and imaginative concepts, Jouve
created rigorously simple yet soft and playful forms, including
plump, contrapposto vessels, rotund pitchers and cylindrical vases.
This exquisite Bird lamp is made of glazed earthenware. His
tireless experimentation of glazes led to a palette of perfect
matte blacks, bone whites and joyful pops of lime green, lemony
yellow and, occasionally, selenium red. Jouve’s ceramics echo the
organic modernism of his CAF colleagues, such as Charlotte Perriand
and Serge Mouille.

Joseph-André Motte, Rare armchair, circa 1956 Designed by
Joseph-André Motte, this armchair was manufactured by Artifort in
the Netherlands. The piece was made with plywood arms and a seat
held by chrome-plated metal legs. Joseph-André Motte was a French
furniture and interior designer. He ranks among the most
influential and innovative figures of post-war French design,
devoted to combining modern and traditional techniques, forms and
materials. He studied at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris,
graduating in 1948 and began his career as a furniture designer at
the Bon Marché, one of the oldest Parisian department stores,
collaborating with Marcel Gascoin’s workshop. In 1954, he founded
his own agency and co-founded the Atelier de Recherche Plastique
with Michel Mortier and Pierre Guariche.
BLAIRMAN & SONS UK
W.A.S Benson, Brass table lamp, circa 1900From 1880s to 1920s,
lighting was undergoing a series of radical changes. During this
time, William Arthur Smith Benson (1854-1924) was at the forefront
of lighting design. Trained as an architect in the 1880s he quickly
turned exclusively to designing and manufacturing all types of
lighting, from table lamps to hanging chandeliers. This brass table
lamp with its original conical shade retaining its silvered
interior shows how imaginative Benson’s work was in the sphere of
electrical lighting. Inventor as well as designer, Benson
registered patents for many of his ideas, such as standard lamp
adjusters, electric switches and roses for lamps, and even an early
type of dimmer.
ALEXANDRE GUILLEMAIN FRANCE
George Nakashima, Cross-legged free edge desk, 1978From Japanese
and American descent, George Nakashima, one of the fathers of the
American Craft movement, was a designer, architect and woodworker.
His most representative creations are large tables made out of big
blocks of polished wood with finishing details left rough. George
Nakashima’s cross-legged free edge desk explores the dichotomy
between strength and fragility. Carved from a magnificent piece of
rich American Walnut wood, the desk is spare and elegant, it is the
end product of a formal education in architecture as well as
extensive exposure to European Modernism, Eastern religious
philosophy, and Japanese craft traditions.

MODERNITY SWEDEN
Kaare Klint and Edvard Kindt-Larsen, Easy chair Mix,1937The Easy
chair Mix was originally designed by Kaare Klint and Edvard
Kindt-Larsen in 1927. Klint named it the Mix chair referencing “a
mixture of Kindt and Klint”, and in so doing crediting his pupil at
the Academy, Edvard Kindt-Larsen, with his collaboration on the
chair. From 1931 the chair was made by Rud Rasmussens Snedkerier as
model number 4396 and only first exhibited in 1937 in the
Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at the Danish Museum of
Art and Design. Convex at the top and concave in the seat, the
constant rolling line and subtle play with curvature is the
hallmark of the piece.
MOUVEMENTS MODERNES FRANCE
Garouste and Bonetti, Cabinet de Sèvres, 1989Celebrated for
inventing a new romanticism, the Paris-based design duo Garouste
& Bonetti became recognised as international players in the
art/design market from the 1980s to the late 90s. Their furniture
is extraordinarily inventive, unconventional and quirky but with
grandeur, wit and a subtle brilliance. Their inspiration is
surprising and iconoclastic, in turn primitive, poetic, baroque,
ultra sophisticated or with a kitsch connotation. A major piece of
their work, this orange lacquer and blue sèvres porcelain and wood
cabinet was presented in 1989 by the Neotu gallery and produced in
collaboration with the national manufacture of Sèvres.
PRIVEEKOLLEKTIE CONTEMPORARY ART | DESIGN THE NETHERLANDS
Amarist Studio, Bomb Love, 2019Run by Arán Lozano and Clara
Campo Amarist Studio’s works are both evocative and functional,
characterized by their colossal visual power. The studio develops
pieces critiquing today’s social, cultural and economic
international news. A series of everyday objects and preconceived
symbols are transformed into functional sculptures to stimulate
consciousness. This sculptural lamp is made of Alabaster stone, a
delicate and translucent mineral extracted from quarries in Spain.
The artwork intends to change the meaning of an object like a
projectile into a source of Light.
HERVÉ VAN DER STRAETEN FRANCE
Hervé Van Der Straeten, Armoire Kimono 491, Contemporary
Creation Designed by Hervé Van Der Straeten, this majestic Kimono
armoire, made of lacquered wood and patinated chocolate-toned
coppered steel with an interior in sycamore, closes like a
traditional robe. Van der Straeten’s furniture and lighting are
instantly recognizable from the way that contrasting materials,
bold variations of form, defiant volumes, and elegant lines are
combined with perfect proportions. He designs and makes everything
in his own dedicated bronze and cabinet making workshops as well as
having a Paris gallery to display a selection of both his unique
and limited edition pieces.

SOUTHERN GUILD SOUTH AFRICA
Rich Mnisi, Nwa-Mulamula’s chaise, 2018 Rich Mnisi is a
celebrated and uprising South African fashion designer widely
heralded for his fusion of contemporary pop culture and traditional
African heritage. Encouraged by Julian McGovan, co-founder of
Southern Guild, Rich Mnisi made his furniture design debut in 2018
with the large-scale, anthropomorphic Nwa-Mulamula’s chaise longue.
It is named after his late great-grandmother, an ever-present
guardian whose teachings have lived on in his family through
storytelling generation after generation.The idea of guardianship
is an important theme for the designer, whose work in both fashion
and furniture pays homage to his cultural traditions, ancestral
lineage and personal narrative.

Élizabeth Garouste, Auguste pedestal table, 2019Born in 1946,
wife of the painter Gerard Garouste, Elizabeth Garouste has always
been fascinated by nature. Her creations are vegetal or mineral
fantasies, as seen in this pedestal table with its ceramic top and
gold leaf finished wrought iron base. The rejection of symmetry in
her work gives the objects an organic sentiment, as though tortured
by the elements. The subtle magic of the colours, the platinums,
the golds, the bronzes and the glosses resonate with the
expressionism of the forms.

Odd Matter, Guise 1 Scagliola coffee table, 2018 Odd Matter is
an Amsterdam-based design studio led by Els Woldhek (Dutch) and
Georgi Manassiev (Bulgarian). Driven by curiosity for all the
strange and wonderful, the studio has been creating and exploring
our world’s past, present and future through its materials,
processes and concepts. Their works combine techniques from
different historical eras and the result is unique. To make this
Guise coffee table, Odd Matter have used the technology Scagliola,
a hand-painted marble technique from 17th century Italy.
TODD MERRILL STUDIO USA
Marc Fish, Console table, 2019UK-based designer Marc Fish
founded his own studio practice nearly twenty years ago, striving
to transcend the barriers of art, design, sculpture and furniture.
While the curvilinear forms of Fish’s works hark back to Art
Nouveau, his process pushes the limits of twenty-first century
furniture design. Each piece uses the finest hand-cut wood veneers
and natural finishes, from bronze to squid ink, and is created
through Fish’s practices in micro stack-lamination. This new
console table, the latest in his Ethereal Series is inspired by
elements of the natural world and mimics the delicacy of leaf
structures with their complicated system of midribs and veins.

Vincenzo De Cotiis, Side table, 2016Vincenzo De Cotiis studied
architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and founded his studio in
1997. Considered a pioneer of the international collectible design
scene, Cotiis creates one-of-a-kind and limited-edition projects by
hand in his atelier. His furniture and interiors reflect the legacy
of Italian minimalism behind his elegant appropriation of salvaged
materials. As a designer, he is preoccupied with the weathering
effect of time. His objects marry patinated and uneven finishes in
compositions that incorporate traditional Italian craftsmanship and
materials. Both his renowned interior architecture and his
furniture works reflect the influence of the artist’s forefathers,
Gio Ponti and Carlo Scarpa.

Germans Ermics & Iksos-Berlin, Presence - Absence, 2017The
table/bench Presence-Absence was made in 2017 by Germans Ermics and
Iskos-Berlin for the exhibition Side By Side Outside at Design
Museum Denmark. It exists in a red and a blue edition, limited to 8
examples. Made of hardened glass and mirror, the work explores our
perception of color, light and form, as it constantly changes
according to the surrounding light and shapes. By a masterful
graduation from 100% mirror to 100% glass, Presence-Absence seems
to appear and vanish according to the point of view. This idea of
duality is key to Iskos-Berlin.

Jaime Hayon, Niko Niko table, 2018 Spanish artist-designer Jaime
Hayon studied industrial design in Madrid and Paris before joining
Fabrica, the Benetton-funded design and communication academy in
Italy in 1997 where he directed the design department until 2003.
Hayon set up his own studio practice in 2000 and dedicated himself
fully to his personal projects from 2003 onward. Today, he is one
of the most acclaimed contemporary designers worldwide.

Studio MVW, JinYe console, 2019 Founded in Shanghai by Chinese
designer Xu Ming and French architect Virginie Moriette, Studio MVW
is known for their sculptural, architectural forms and ability to
subtly connect contemporary Western and Eastern aesthetics. This
console is part of the JinYe collection, which means Gold (Jin)
Leaf (Ye) in Chinese, an appropriate name for a collection based on
the dialogue between a brass-colored leaf with a subtile pink gold
shade and the shimmering richness of the Patagonian quartzite. The
console takes on a new and different appearance depending on the
angle from which it is viewed.

Pablo Picasso, Head of the Sun, 1956At the end of the 1940s,
Pablo Picasso started creating ceramic works. At the time when
Picasso spent his summers on the Cote d’Azur in the South of
France. Inspired by the clarity of the light and the bright
Mediterranean colours, the artist visited Vallauris for the annual
pottery exhibition in 1946. Picasso quickly became enamoured with
the ceramics being produced by the Atelier Madoura, owned by
Suzanne and Georges Ramié, and partnered with them to begin
producing his own ceramics, ushering in one of the most prolific
periods of his career. Picasso went on to create clay pieces
throughout the last years of his life.

René Magritte, L’Atlantide, 1957Galerie von Vertes places
surrealist painter René Magritte centre stage with a rare gouache
titled L’Atlantide and commissioned by Barnet Hodes in 1957.
Magritte only created a small number of works during his lifetime
and pieces created in black and white are particularly rare. The
title of this haunting gouache refers to the people who, according
to Platon, lived on the mythical island of Atlantis. The bathtub
and white veil, elements frequently used in his works, reference
his childhood and mother. L’Atlantide was based on an earlier oil
painting from 1927 which is now part of the collection of the
Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum in Massachusetts.
Marc Chagall, La Fenêtre dans le Ciel, 1957Opera Gallery
presents Marc Chagall’s important La Fenêtre dans le ciel painting
from 1957. Marc Chagall is one of the most celebrated and important
art figures of 20th century art. His Jewish heritage remained a
major influence on his life as an artist and his dreamlike
figurative depictions are associated with several major artistic
movements of the 20th century including Fauvism, Cubism and
Surrealism. In his early twenties, Chagall relocated to Paris to
further develop his artistic vision, continuing to paint subjects
from his memories alongside the Parisian scenes. Throughout all his
work, much of the vibrancy came through in his mastery of light and
colour.
SIDE GALLERY SPAIN
Sabine Marcelis, Totem Lights, 2018Based in Rotterdam, Sabine
Marcelis, a New Zealand-born designer, approaches design in a
refreshing, modern and innovative way. The Totem lights are a
continuation of the designer’s fascination with the interaction
between light and cast resins and are a new truly 3-dimensional
evolution of her past explorations on the theme. The series is
built-up of several stacked translucent resin volumes which are
slightly rotated on a central axis. The carved out void where the
neon light is inserted allows for a multifaceted play between the
twisted planes of polished resin and light reflections. Every angle
of the lights has a unique visual experience.

Andrew Wicks, Still Life of Seven Vases, 2019Having worked in
slip-cast porcelain for over ten years Andrew decided to take on a
new challenge in 2006 and taught himself to throw in porcelain
clay. Throwing gives a versatility and freedom to create unique
forms and differing scales. Once the vessels are thrown and turned,
the design is carefully marked up onto the smooth pot ready for the
intensive process of hand carving. These delicate seven thrown and
carved porcelain vases have textured surfaces and are often
inspired by patterns found in the natural world. Once carving is
completed each piece is slowly dried out over many days. They are
initially biscuit fired and then glaze fired to 1250 -1260 degrees
Celsius.
GLASS + CERAMICS
KAREN SWAMI FRANCE
Karen Swami, Klimt 2, 2019 Maison Liaigre collaborator’s since
2012, Karen Swami’s work has already been shown in London at
Christian Dior and Dorian Caffot de Fawes. At PAD London, she will
present unique pieces made in her Parisian studio, including smoke
fired works using the Kintsugi technique and this exceptional black
stoneware piece with a high fired glaze, creating brown cracks.
After a second firing, Swami inserts a white slip in-between the
cracks, fires again, and finally removes any further chips one by
one, to create an organic pattern. At the end of the process, she
fills the spaces with the Japanese lacquer Urushi and with a
mixture of pewter and pure gold.
ACHILLE SALVAGNI UK / ITALY
Achille Salvagni, Oceano, Poseidone and Tritone, 2019 Faithful
to his ongoing investigation of traditional Italian craft
techniques, Achille will devote his booth at PAD London to Murano
glass. Working with local glass masters, he has harnessed the
alchemy of this challenging technique to produce striking new
designs. Most commonly used for ornamental purposes, Salvagni’s
ambitious new collection pushes the boundaries of glass to create
larger scale functional furniture as well as decorative objects
such as a series of vase-cum-candleholders – named after the
deities of ocean and sea: Poseidone, Oceano and Tritone. The fluid,
organic forms glow in jewelled colours and are crowned with
gold-enamelled, cast-bronze, flame-shaped finials.

is an extension of the Prana collection and was named after the
lotus flower, often referred to as the sacred flower. The piece
includes bold geometric patterns and coloured stones, unique

Hu’s eclectic use of multiple gems is apparent in each of her

influences. This delicate butterfly brooch jewel in titanium is
centred around rainbow chrysocolla, marquise and pear-shaped
diamonds, while the wings are encrusted with 38 rose-cut diamonds

Alice Cicolini, Jaipur Bougainvillea Muzo RingThe sacred
architecture and patterns of the Silk Route are the inspiration for
Alice Cicolini’s jewellery. The pieces are handmade in India in the
studio of one of the last Jaipuri meenakari trained in the enamel
traditions of Persia, passed down through family generations for
over 200 years. This piece is inspired by the glorious burst of
fuchsia blossoms cascading over the classic Rajasthani Black Strap
tiles. In 2018, Alice collaborated with the famous Colombian Muzo
emerald mine to create two spectacular pieces, featuring their rare
hexagonal stones, and celebrating the launch of a new collection of
gems from the mine that focus on the natural beauty of this most

Fabio Salini, Titanium earrings with rubellite, rhodolite,
kunzite, pink sapphires and diamonds Fabio Salini’s experiments
with humble materials, from leather to carbon fibre and cord,

Fine Costa Rica Metate, Guanacaste-Nicoya Region, ca. A.D. 300 -
700This zoomorphic sculpture is a ceremonial metate, one of the
most unusual and complex traditions of pre-Columbian artefacts from
Costa Rica. The stylized body of the animal, with its quadrangular
and concave shape, was used as a plate and ceremonial altar where
corns, plants and hallucinogenic herbs were ground during shamanic
rituals. This type of tripod metates mainly represent animals and
are in line with the notion of fertility, essential elements for
the farming populations of the time. The three angular legs are
decorated with engraved motifs, featuring symbolic connotations,
and lined on the inner part with openwork interlacing.

Emperor Caracalla, early 3rd century A.D (211-217 A.D.) Phoenix
Ancient Art brings to the fair treasured sculptural works including
a life-sized marble head of the Emperor Caracalla from the early
3rd Century A.D. The numerous anatomical details and the
well-marked asymmetry, mostly in the execution of the forehead, the
eyes and the cheeks, confer a precise personal nature: it is
indisputably an individual portrait with realistic and
differentiated features. The strong head with its rectangular face
and brutal expression, its receding cheekbones, pointy chin, thick
hair rendered by a multitude of ringlets and the short beard are
elements that regularly characterise images of the emperor, mostly
those from the last years of his reign.

Jukun shoulder mask, Nigeria, 19th CenturyThis shoulder mask
from Nigeria is at the confluence of cultures and styles of the
people of North-West of the Middle Benue: Jukun, Mumuyw, Wurkun.
Its specific form is characterised by an anthropomorphic
representation, whose torso is signified by an arched structure.
The old masks of the shoulders form a small and rare corpus. Their
tradition was abandoned when the first pieces were released on the
art market. They were linked to secret societies and used during
agrarian rites, but the exact course of the masquerades in which
they intervened remains unknown.
