Paris now and forever, romantic and trendy, chic and

bohemian… Midway between Avenue Montaigne and

Rue du Faubourg St-Honoré, an address resembling a

42 Avenue Gabriel. Right bank, a stone’s throw from

the Elysée Palace and the Champs-Elysées, where the

A HISTORY

The highly sought after 8th arrondissement won acclaim

from the beginning of the 19th century.

Over the years, the emergence of the famous nearby

‘Golden Triangle’ has made this quadrangle even more

valuable – to the point of it becoming the symbol

of Parisian lifestyle. The history of Avenue Gabriel

embodies the quintessence of the Haussmann spirit

to perfection. In 1818, Avenue de l’Elysée, which had

existed since the creation of the Champs-Elysées in

1670, was extended beyond Avenue de Marigny, right

up to Place de la Concorde. It was then called Avenue

Gabriel, in tribute to the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel

(1698-1782). As first architect to the King, he created

the Place Louis XV, which is today known as Place de

la Concorde.

At the beginning of the 19th century, and then during the

Second Empire, the Champs-Elysées district became

the prime location for elegant Parisian life. Alongside

the six houses bordering Avenue des Champs-Elysées

in 1800, luxurious dwellings – Haussmann urban

mansions, buildings or bourgeois homes – swiftly

appeared. All the gardens were assigned to the Paris

Municipality that developed them, building pavements

and then four fountains. In 1854, the construction of

the building located on the angle of Avenue Gabriel

and the Rue du Cirque became part of this dynamic.

Owned by the Duc of Morny’s family until 1888, the

building was completely occupied by large apartments.

Subsequently acquired by an insurance company, it

became the property of Pierre Cardin’s Compagnie

d’exploitation et de financement Capucines and after of

Michel Reybier and his family. 160 years after it was

built, Michel Reybier and his family have now made it

the most stylish address in Paris.

Architecture and decoration

Two interpretations of Parisian style

Both located in sought-after Parisian districts,

each of the La Réserve Paris establishments

expresses a completely different vision in terms of

atmosphere and décor. Classical Paris at the hotel

on Avenue Gabriel, designer Paris in the Trocadéro

apartments: two diametrically opposite facets, yet

governed by the same quality standards in terms

of both volumes and materials. Jacques Garcia’s

choice of opulent leather and velvet fabrics in the

hotel responds to Rémi Tessier ’s clever use of

slate in the apartments.


A TASTE FOR BEAUTIFUL THINGS

The typically Haussmann-style architecture of an address

dedicated to French lifestyle proved an ideal playground

for decorator Jacques Garcia, who was chosen by

Michel Reybier for his particular affinities with this era.

La Réserve Paris – Hotel and Spa displays the style of

an era down to the smallest detail, in harmony with the

spirit of the place. Like a nod to those in the know, a few

photos of the family and vineyards belonging to Michel

Reybier, owner of the Domaine de Cos d’Estournel in

the Bordeaux region, bid you welcome. From the first

steps on the Versailles parquet, the spectacular staircase

soaring to the heavens captures the eye. Everywhere,

immense spaces bathed in light, barely muted by the rich

fabrics of the hangings. Here and there, beautiful marble

fireplaces and everywhere the joy of huge indoor spaces,

typical of early 19th century Haussmann apartments – an

all-but-forgotten generosity.

AN EXERCISE IN STYLE

Echoing the worked façade adorned with Corinthian

columns, the architectural interiors are reminiscent

of the traditional canons of the era. Renovation work

revealed historical ornamentation, woodwork, moldings

and cornices that had been forgotten and concealed

behind partitions and false ceilings. Other vestiges of

the original building were also found, particularly in

the Salon Louis XV. All in all, a precious foundation that

strongly inspired Jacques Garcia in his plan to recreate

the period ambiances. In every suite and room, the walls

are thus graced with a delicate play of carved moldings,

finely worked cornices and decorative sculpted friezes.

Engraved Cordovan leather frames the doors of the lifts

and the contours of the bar, while embossed motifs adorn

the corridors around black and gold lacquered doors.

COLORS AND MATERIALS

The 26 suites and 14 rooms interpret four gentle

harmonies in a serene atmosphere of soft colors:

bronze, beige, prune and tea rose. Walls hung with

silk, damascene brocade drapes, taffeta and velvet,

embossed fabrics, herringbone oak parquet, Carrara

marble and blue Turquin from floor to ceiling in the

bathrooms. Furniture consisting of many unique

antiques, with old seats re-upholstered, such as the

18th century ponteuse chairs decorated with birds of

paradise …

A GLIMPSE OF GREEN

Representing the ultimate privilege, the green

surroundings of the hotel in the very heart of Paris are

the stuff of dreams! With its plantations of orange trees

in pots and Versailles style planters, the landscaped

entrance designed by Pierre-Alexandre Risser’s

company, Horticulture et Jardins, pays tribute to the Sun

King’s Orangerie. The lobby, the interior courtyard and

the terrace on the first floor are also well-endowed with

plants, featuring shrubs and plantations that change

according to the season. The immediate vicinity of the

hotel offers many green areas suitable for a quick stroll

as soon as the sun comes out: the Elysée gardens just

on the other side of Avenue Marigny, the majestic trees

on Avenue des Champs-Elysées…

The classic elegance of the façade on Place du Trocadéro,

the wrought iron balconies, the faceted mirrors in the

entrance hall… nothing hints at what is behind the doors

of the apartments! In a manner both daring and masterful,

the interior design makes a clean break with the exterior.

Decorated by designer Rémi Tessier, the apartments give

pride of place to contemporary, understated, clean lines.

LESS IS MORE

Rémi Tessier’s desire to combine “beauty and usefulness,

aesthetics with the realities of daily life” perfectly

corresponds to the spirit of La Réserve, where the

need for quality and discretion reign supreme. Echoing

splendid architecture featuring spectacular volumes, the

apartments are decorated in a minimalist, contemporary

style, as if to better promote the intrinsic beauty of the

place. Noble materials such as ebony, rosewood and

sycamore make a perfect match with slate, concrete,

stucco, metal and glass. Not to mention the light itself

that so skillfully sculpts the vast spaces… This is the

ideal setting for all the great classics of contemporary

design, such as Knoll, Vitra, MaxAlto and Andrée Putman.

Timeless neutral tones – white, ivory, black, grey – outline

FRENCH-STYLE PRIVATE GARDENS

A native of the Vosges region and heir to the horticultural

tradition for which Nancy has carved itself a reputation

since the 19th century, landscaper Jean-Christophe

Stoerkel sums up his vision of the gardens of La Réserve

Paris – Apartments, designed in conjunction with his

mentor, Daniel Besneux. “We dreamt up these gardens

as a link between La Réserve and the Trocadéro gardens

at the foot of the Eiffel Tower …”

“Through the introduction of the yew (Taxus Baccata) as

the core element, we wished to use this symbolic plant

to provide a reminder of French gardens in the 19th

century, the period when Avenue Georges Mandel was

created. It gives strength to a garden and responds to the

architectural power of the building. The choice of metallic

cubes covered in ivy and blue Hainaut limestone on the

ground nonetheless brings a contemporary touch to the

project and thus matches Rémi Tessier’s scenography

concept. The softness of the perennials, climbing roses

and jasmine, along with the running water of the ponds,

delicately punctuate this contemporary yet classical

structure.”

A native of Brittany who trained alongside the greatest

chefs in the business, notably including Alain Senderes at

Lucas Carton, he has also worked in the kitchens of the

such as Le Crillon and L’Ambroisie. His travels in Japan

have also had a strong influence on him. Wherever he
