Mitsubishi Motors developed the Lancer Evolution with its sights firmly set on dom-inating the World Rally Championship. Lancer Evolution made its market debut in October 1992 as a high-performance all-wheel drive sports sedan with Lancer’s lightweight, compact 4-door sedan body being powered by the high-output 4G63-type 2-liter intercooler-turbocharged engine that had been honed to perfection in the Ga-lant VR-4 sedan and that delivered its gutsy torque to the tires via a hi-performance all-wheel drive system.
The first-generation Lancer Evolution made its WRC debut in January 1993 in the Monte Carlo Rally. Entered as a Group A car under FIA regulations, which prescribe modifications to exterior, engine, suspen-sion, and which require that at least 2,500 units of the homologation car be produced annually, the Lancer Evolution challenge was under way.
Since its debut, the Lancer Evolution series has, as the Mitsubishi homologation model, gone from strength to strength through an on-going program of technical improvements and specification changes designed to make it more competitive in the grueling WRC events where average speeds rise each year. These improvements and the aggressive incorporation of AYC (Evolu-tion IV) and ACD (Evolution VII) all-
wheel drive technology have been actively reflected in the production model, driving the "evolution" of the series and bringing significant improvements in terms of speed and acceleration, cornering and braking performance.
Driven by these advances in perfor-mance, the Group A Evolution chalked up a glittering track record that includes the WRC Manufacturers Championship in 1998 and no less than four consecutive WRC Drivers Championships from 1996 through 1999. And in Group N of the WRC, where regulations keep the rally ma-chine much closer in specification to the production model, Evolution has reaped no fewer than seven consecutive Drivers Cups, 1995 through 2001.
In Japan, meanwhile, Lancer Evolutions have generated a steady stream of winning results across the full motorsport spectrum: the All-Japan Rally series, gymkhanas, dirt trials and super endurance races included.
The technology bred and honed through the company’s active participation in mo-torsport has been fed back to successive production models, to deliver the highest levels of driving experience and fun-to-drive qualities to Lancer Evolution drivers.
In seeking the highest levels of dynamic performance in its homologation model, to
date Mitsubishi Motors has only offered manual gearbox Evolutions. Now, to bring the hi-performance all-wheel drive sports sedan experience to a wider audience, the company has developed the Lancer Evolu-tion VII GT-A automatic transmission model.
Inheriting Lancer Evolution VII GSR’s exceptional dynamic performance, GT-A’s automatic transmission with Sport-Mode manual override is complemented by detail optimization of body, engine, suspension and all-wheel drive system to realize more intuitive and driver-friendly handling. Comfortably cocooned in a classy, sport-functional interior, the driver can access ev-ery ounce of Lancer Evolution VII perfor-mance through just two pedals - accelerator and brake.
GT-A designationThrough successive series, Lancer Evolution has continued to evolve. Marking this latest addition as the defin-itive automatic sports sedan, the GT-A designation reflects its gran tourismo character, while the first letter of the al-phabet tells that the Lancer Evolution series is taking its first step in that di-rection as well as pointing to its auto-matic transmission.

Lancer Evolution VII GSR sports a dynam-ically aggressive and refined front end de-signed for function and for looks. GT-A builds on these styling characteristics to present an exterior that optimally melds sport-functional aesthetics with a classy ap-pearance that appeals to more mature sensi-bilities.
Characteristic styling elements shared by GT-A include: Mitsubishi’s Diamond Cut
Nose-with sharply truncated corners-that improves maneuverability and visibility through tight corners; Blister-type fenders flares-melded seamlessly and elegantly into the body lines-accommodate both the wide track and wide-rim wheels, which help Evolution to cling limpet-like to the road, and a longer bump stroke that brings improved traction over all surfaces.
For GT-A, the heat extraction outlets and
NACA ducts in the lightweight aluminum engine hood and the central air intake slot in the front bumper have been eliminated to reduce air resistance by reducing the amount of air inducted into the engine com-partment, and to realize an exterior that that is both more refined and more matured in appearance.
On GT-A, GSR’s oversize rear-deck spoiler is replaced by a smaller version with built-in LED high-mount brake light. Catering to individual customer preferences, GT-A is available with GSR’s 4-way variable attack angle rear spoiler or with no rear spoiler, as factory-fitted options.
Rear door windows and rear windscreen are available with privacy glass. Multi-lamp discharge-type headlamp units that project a high-precision beam pattern and high light intensity and that house the fog lamps are standard. The adoption of clear ice-cut lenses for the integral turn signals and the outer lens in the rear combination lamp units enhances GT-A’s classy appear-ance.

Evolution VII GT-A’s cockpit packs into a hi-density design all the functions and fea-tures necessary for sporty driving.
GT-A coordinates the off-black mono-tone keynote coloring of the GSR with blue-pearl for dashboard trim, shift selector panel, power window switch panel, and uses blue stitching for the genuine leather steering wheel grip, shift selector knob and boot, and the parking brake handle. The overall effect adds an attractively classy ap-pearance to the sport-functional look of GT-A’s cockpit.
The 3-dial sports instrument pod locates the tachometer in the middle and uses black-on-white graphics exclusive to GT-A for enhanced visibility and legibility of en-gine speed, shift selector position, ACD mode and other vehicle status information.
Instrument dial bezels and pointer tips, shift selector boot ring, door handles and air vent controls are tastefully finished in chrome to add a classy touch to the sport-functional look of the interior.
The leather-covered 3-spoke steering wheel, in a simple but powerful design, fea-tures thumb-operated shift selectors and a dimpled grip to keep the hands securely in place when pushing GT-A hard through the corners. A chrome boss ring adds a further touch of class.
The use of genuine leather trim for the manual shift-fashioned selector knob and selector boot is designed to appeal to the enthusiast driver who appreciates the little touches of refinement that set GT-A apart.
Evolution VII GT-A uses exclusive gener-ously-sized sports seats that provide opti-mum location and comfort. Gold color ac-cents in the upholstery cloth add a satisfy-ingly dynamic touch to the interior. Seat cushion height is between that of Evolution VII GSR and Lancer Cedia, achieving an optimal balance between low center of gravity and ease of entry and egress.
GT-A is available with Recaro bucket seats that provide superb location in fast, tight maneuvering, or with genuine leather upholstered seats that bring a touch of ma-ture elegance to the interior space.
The Recaro seats are positioned at the same cushion height as the standard sports seating. The leather upholstered seats share the same slightly elevated cushion height setting as the Lancer Cedia Wagon, realiz-ing easier entry and egress and more relax-ing comfort. The leather upholstered driv-er’s seat also features switch-operated 4-way power adjustment of slide, height and backrest recline.
A floor console with angle-adjustable armrest in the front and center armrest with cup holders in the rear enhance conve-nience and comfort on longer trips.
Strategic placement of PET sound ab-sorbing material and other sound insulation in the dashboard, floor console, door trim and floor carpet reduce interior noise levels to below those of GSR.

GT-A is powered by the 4G63-type 2-liter 16-valve DOHC intercooler-turbocharged engine that features supreme levels of re-finement after its illustrious career of un-der-the-gun competition powering succes-sive Evolutions to victory in motorsport events.
For GT-A, the 4G63 power unit has been matched to the automatic transmission and tuned to deliver optimal performance across the driving spectrum: from everyday driv-ing to full-bloodied motorsport participa-tion.
GT-A places primary emphasis on low-end and mid-range response rather than ab-solute power output. It achieves this using a turbine nozzle with a smaller cross-section area and a smaller compressor than on GSR.
Maximum power output of 200kW (272PS) / 6500 rpm, while lower than GSR, gives GT-A class-topping dynamic perfor-mance for a 2-liter automatic model. And pumping maximum torque of 343N-m (35.0 kg-m) across a broad range of 3000 rpm to 5000 rpm, the flat torque band deliv-ers awesome acceleration and driveability.
The exhaust retains its pleasingly power-
ful, deep performance sound while engine-related noise has been significantly reduced all round by using: vibration damping steel for the oil pan; steel intercooler piping that reduces the high-frequency component of the intake noise; and a choke pipe in the muffler tail pipe that reduces exhaust bur-ble.

The power unit is mated to the W5A51-type INVECS-II Sport-Mode 5A/T*1 trans-mission that has been honed and refined to perfection in the Galant VR-4.
For GT-A, the final reduction gear ratio has been optimized, a lower first gear ratio improves acceleration from rest, while a taller fifth gear improves fuel economy and comfort at high cruising speeds.
Water- and air-cooled transmission fluid coolers arranged in series keep the trans-mission fluid at the optimum working tem-perature no matter how hot the pace gets.
INVECS-II’s Sport-Mode features a manual gate that allows the driver to shift through the gears as with a manual gear-box. GT-A also provides thumb-operated selectors on both sides of the steering wheel, enabling the driver to shift up and down without having to take his hand off the wheel.
The Sport-Mode system prevents the driver from changing down manually when it judges such a shift would result in over-reving. On GT-A, this feature is comple-mented by an audible alarm that alerts the driver to the fact that the attempted down shift was not made, keeping him in closer touch with the operating status of his vehi-cle.

INVECS-II Sport-Mode 5A/TIncorporating Optimal Shift Control, which provides best-scenario shift scheduling for the average driver, and Adaptive Shift Con-trol, which tailors shift scheduling to the pref-erences and driving patterns of individual drivers, this advanced automatic transmis-sion with manual override caters for all re-quirements, from cruising around town to fast driving on country roads.
Four-wheel drive brings dramatic improve-ments to dynamic performance. Evolution VII sports Mitsubishi’s own all-wheel con-trol system, comprising ACD*2 (Active Center Differential), AYC*3 (Active Yaw Control) and Sports ABS*4 components.
In Evolution VII GT-A, these advanced components have been optimally matched to the automatic transmission to bring easy- and fun-to-drive performance to a wider range of drivers.
The ACD electronically regulates front and rear differential slippage. On GT-A, the ACD exerts a more powerful limiting ac-tion than on GSR, improving vehicle stabil-ity through corners.
The AYC controls torque split between the rear wheels. On GT-A, the AYC shares the same configuration as on GSR, realiz-ing rapid steering response and control.
Mitsubishi’s Sports ABS system controls braking force at each wheel individually to match steering inputs. On GT-A, as on GSR, this system is set up to ensure deliv-
ery of necessary braking force while han-dling stability is retained through corners.
Changing to a constant velocity joint for the rear differential end of the propeller shaft has reduced rumbling and vibration.

ACD (Active Center Differential)The ACD traction control system uses an electronically controlled hydraulically activa-ted multi-plate clutch to regulate slippage in the center differential, which splits torque equally between the front and rear wheels. Regulating differential limiting action be-tween free and locked to match driving con-ditions, the system realizes substantial im-provements in traction and in steering re-sponse and feel.*3... AYC (Active Yaw Control)Housed in the rear differential, the comput-er-controlled AYC traction control system optimally regulates torque transfer in the rear differential and thereby tailors rear wheel differentials to match driver operation and vehicle operating status. The system adaptively regulates the yaw (turning) mo-ment that acts on the body, equalizing the
load on the four tires and thereby improving vehicle stability and cornering performance.*4... Sports ABSMitsubishi’s Sports Anti-lock Braking System uses a steering angle sensor to detect steer-ing input. The computer uses this informa-tion to regulate braking force at each wheel independently and improve steering perfor-mance under braking.
Evolution VII GT-A also uses Mitsubishi’s EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) system which apportions braking force opti-mally between front and rear wheels. Under hard braking, EBD operates to reduce the load on the front wheels by apportioning more braking force to the rear wheels, there-by reducing fade. Tailoring brake force dis-tribution to road surface and vehicle load conditions, EBD contributes to stable and consistent braking performance under all conditions.

Uncompromising weight reduction and strategically placed reinforcements contri-bute to a high-rigidity body that provides a platform able to support the highest levels of dynamic performance.
Extra reinforcement and sound insula-tion on Evolution GT-A result in improved steering feel and lower levels of vibration and noise.
Suspension mounting rigidity is in-creased through the addition of ring-shaped steel plates on top of the front and rear spring housings, giving greater linearity and rigidity, as well as less vibration, in the steering.
Other measures introduced in GT-A to reduce engine and road noise transmission include the additional damping material in the dash insulator and in the floor.
Evolution VII’s suspension uses MacPher-son struts at the front and a multi-link ar-rangement at the rear. Honed through com-petition, this suspension realizes outstand-ing straight-line stability and handling char-acteristics.
On GT-A, suspension geometry and steering have been optimized to make the car handle more forgivingly and give a more comfortable ride than GSR, without any sacrifice in Evolution VII’s acclaimed direct and precise steering and tight han-dling characteristics.
Suspension tuning for GT-A includes optimization of front and rear spring con-stants, damping rates, rear stabilizer, front lower control arm forward bush, bump stop rubber and rear upper control arm bushes. GSR’s stiff front stabilizer is retained but the steering gear ratio is optimized for GT-A. Retaining to a close degree GSR’s direct steering, sharp handling and roll character-istics, GT-A’s flatter ride and more natural bump stroke give the driver more control when driving fast on winding roads.

The braking system fully accommodates GT-A’s slightly heavier weight and delivers positive and reassuring stopping power, with low fade and high control characteris-tics in all modes-from urban cruising to full-bloodied competition driving.
Evolution VII GT-A uses high-grip com-pound 225/45ZR17 tires matched to the suspension which, with flatter ride and lon-ger bump stroke, is tuned for ease of han-dling on winding roads. On GT-A, GSR’s 17-inch alloy road wheels get a special lus-ter finish that enhances further its classy looks.
