ISARIA-system: the royal path in Precision Farming
ABSOLUTE FERTILISATION SYSTEM according to the principle “ONLINE + MAP OVERLAY”
Agricultural fields are quite often characterized by a broad soil-diversity or
sometimes called heterogeneity. Therefore the sub-areas need to be treated by
an individual crop management in order to optimize the yield within each yield
potential zone. This is exactly where the ISARIA-system fits perfectly. By using
the ISARIA: Farmers will notice the ecological and economic benefits.
The ISARIA system relies on the innovative and future-oriented approach “ONLINE + MAP
OVERLAY”: in this process, unlike in other systems where only the current plant
development is considered or maps are used that only specify an increase or a decrease
of the application rate, the actual sub-area-specific yield potential of the soil is also taken
into account.
A high degree of expertise has been incorporated into the system, which was developed
over the course of more than 20 years of research at the Chair of Agronomy and Organic
Agriculture at the Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan of the Technische
Universität München (TUM). This approach, the so called ABSOLUTE FERTILISATION
SYSTEM is described below.
With this expert knowledge the system knows exactly the required nitrogen a crop must
have absorbed at a specific growth stage in order to achieve a predicted yield. These values
related to all growth stages relevant for the fertilisation and, at the same time, for a wide
range of potential yields are stored in the system database.
The major advantage for the farmer: The combination of these modules makes it possible
to provide the crop in any sub-area with the minimum amount of nutrients to achieve the
maximum potential yield while maintaining an even N-balance. Thereby, the farmer saves
costs for expensive fertilisers and simultaneously protects the environment.

Multiple benefits guaranteed
In the course of many years of practical testing, conducted by independent institutions all
over Europe, on average a 60 € higher revenue could be achieved per hectare compared
to uniform application. By increasing heterogeneity of the soil even up to 150 €/ha and
more have been achieved.
“In strip trials various site-specific fertilising systems have been compared for several
years. Only the fertilising system which was developed by the Technische Universität
München and is now implemented in the ISARIA system was convincing. The absolute
fertilising system which takes into account the site-specific yield potential enhanced
economic benefit whilst simultaneously the ecological parameters have been optimized
(e.g. the nitrogen balance)” Dr. Franz-Xaver Maidl said, Chair of Ecological Farming and
Crop Farming Systems, Technische Universität München.
Systems which do not take the potential yield into consideration could not achieve any
additional financial returns on average in comparison to uniform fertilizer application. “The
ISARIA-system allows me to applicate valuable resources exactly where it is needed from
the plants. Exact nutrition application based on yield potential maps reduces thereby
dramatically over-fertilisation, improves corn quality and protects the ground water” Carl
Christian Koehler said.
Since the ISARIA system actively reacts to special growth conditions, such as acute drought
during spring, unnecessary fertilising of stressed plants is eliminated. This clearly shows
the variety of benefits of precision farming due to cost savings, environmental protection
and sustainable crop management.
High-tech for smart farmers
In addition to the royal path of an ABSOLUTE FERTILISATION SYSTEM according to the
“ONLINE + MAP OVERLAY” principle, the following application modes are implemented in
the ISARIA system:
1-point mode: here an application value is assigned to the measured sensor value
at a representative area in the field . The sensor signal controls the fertiliser
spreader according to a specified control curve which is related to the current plant
development. The control curve can be adjusted to the upcoming requirements.
PRESS RELEASE 08th November 2015
Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Dorfstraße 7, 85653 Großhelfendorf
2-point mode: here the measurements at two representative areas in the field are
assigned an application value. These two points therefore determine the shape of
the control curve. The application value is then adapted on this control curve
according to the current plant development.
Application map: here a specified application is performed according to a map (=
mapping approach).
Scan mode: with this mode measurement data can be recorded by passing over an
area. No application value calculation takes place in the process.
All implemented application modes take the yield potential of the soil into consideration
(MAP OVERLAY) in addition to the current plants’ growth stage (ONLINE). "This is the only
way it can be assured that low-yield areas are not over fertilised and the potential of high-
yield areas is fully utilised," said Dipl.-Agraringenieur (Univ.) Bernhard Limbrunner, plant
cultivation expert at Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik.
Moreover, the 1-point mode, 2-point mode and application map can, in addition to nitrogen
fertilisation, be used for any other application in which a regulation of the application rate
on the basis of the current crop growth or by means of an application map is beneficial.
For example, this can be soil fertilisation, the application of growth regulators, application
of fungicides or the application of drying agents in potato cultivation as well as application
of nitrogen uptake of the plants.
High-quality electronic equipment
The ISARIA system comprises two measuring units with four LEDs each illuminate the crops
with defined wavelengths (colours). The light reflected by the plants is detected by a highly
sensitive detector. The detector signal is transformed into a digital one and transmitted to
the high-performance processor unit. The signal data are processed there and transmitted
via Bluetooth to the ISARIA terminal in the tractor cabin. As a result, the tractor operator
has information about the nutritional condition of his crop stand instantaneously and
permanently.

The algorithms and yield potential maps stored in the terminal are the basis for determining
the correct N- rate for the period until the next fertilizer application or harvesting,
respectively. "The fertilising implement receives the control message directly from the
terminal for fully automatic adjustment of the optimal application rate," said Tobias Haas,
software expert at Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik.
Simple and user-friendly
The precision farming experts at Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik have always targeted at simple
operation and maximum flexibility with regard to integration in various application
equipment in all development stages of the new plant sensor. As a result, ISARIA is able
to control any electronically controlled application equipment, both fertilizer spreader and
spraying systems. ISOBUS application equipment can also be controlled by ISARIA.
For further data processing in the office, all data can be directly transmitted from the
Windows-based terminal to the headquarters. Fritzmeier offers the perfect solution: the
web-based Fritzmeier-platform is now available for the farmers.
This tool allows it to set application jobs for the ISARIA very easy and comfortable in the
office. Furthermore a broad variety of data (perennial satellite images, yield data and
more) can be used in order to create the optimum yield potential map for the ISARIA.
This map can be merged with the finalized application job and can be uploaded via WLAN
or mobile internet to the ISARIA-terminal. Alternatively the application jobs can be
transmitted via USB-stick to the ISARIA-terminal, too.
Last not least – in order to round up the offering and for documentation purposes as well
as for graphical preparation purposes there the opportunity is given to import measuring
and application data from completed application jobs back to the Fritzmeier-
platform/ISARIA-module. From there the data can be easily extracted by creating an
export file. This makes it really simple to manage all the application jobs and to archive
them.
"The system can be operated intuitively," said farmer Carl Koehler, summarising his
experience with the ISARIA system.

‘On my farm I’ve tested all the available sensor-based systems extensively. In the process, I found the ISARIA completely convincing, courtesy of its precise measuring accuracy as well as its independence of solar radiation and rain. That’s why I now also use it for haulm regulation in my potatoes. I was only able to detect measurably higher yields with the ISARIA, I no longer use any-thing else.’
Jacob van den Borne, Van Den Borne Aardappelen, the Netherlands
‘The estate management “Graf von der Schulenburg” has already been using the ISARIA system for several years. Since then we’ve produced additional yields of up to five per cent. In contrast, we’ve cut back on fertiliser - an expensive farming input - by three to five per cent.’
Jan Plümecke, estate mangagement Graf v. d. Schulenburg, Germany
‘With 32 to 84 soil points in an 18 ha field - optimum fertilisation is only pos-sible with the use of the ISARIA. What’s unique on the market is the linking of yield potential maps to the scanned data of crops. Moreover, since 2011, on-farm-trials carried out show more consistent protein levels with a significantly optimized N fertiliser balance.’
Torsten Reim, Reim GbR, Germany
‘By means of the ISARIA sensor, I can use valuable resources where I need them. Precise placement of nutrients taking into account yield zones reduces over-fertilisation, improves the qualities and protects the groundwater.’
Carl Christian Koehler, Siestedt Agrar GmbH, Germany
Statements from ISARIA-users
Statement from the research community
‘Since I use the ISARIA the yield potential of my fields is optimally used at every place in the field. Both the yield and also the protein content is mea-surably higher. Thus, investment costs charge back earlier than with other systems on the market.’
Florian Heyn, Agro-Vit Sp.z o.o., Poland
In strip trials various site-specific fertilising systems have been compared for several years. Only the fertilising system which was developed by the TUM and is now implemented in the ISARIA was convincing. The absolute fertilis-ing system which considers the yield potential achieved a clear rise in profits whilst simultaneously the ecological parameters have been optimized (e.g. the nitrogen balance).’

The new FRITZMEIER-PORTAL:
- Job management with the ISARIA-MODUL -
The new ISARIA-MODULE is integrated in the FRITZMEIER-PORTAL. With this the
job management for the well-known ISARIA-SYSTEM can be managed through
the online-platform. The farmer is enabled to do the job management very
comfortable from home on its own computer before heading on to the field – the
perfect solution in order to complete the whole system.
Measuring principle and functionality of ISARIA-SYSTEM
Whilst moving over the crops, sensors measure the light reflection obtained by the plants,
which correlates with the nitrogen nutrition status as well as the crop density of the plants.
The values ascertained are transmitted wirelessly to the ISARIA terminal in the driver‘s
cab, where the exactly required application amount is calculated and transferred to the
application device terminal.
On the basis of individual setting options, the ISARIA-SYSTEM is suitable for a lot of
applications, e. g. for site specific application of nitrogen fertiliser or growth regulators.
However, site specific soil conditions and field-specific experiences of the farmer cannot be
captured or taken into account just by measuring the crops. This is why the ISARIA-
SYSTEM offers the ideal solution with the unique MAP OVERLAY-MODE that takes account
of the yield potential of the soil and the current status of the crops by using a yield potential
map.
Job management from home
Since a lot of ISARIA customers wish to deal with job management in the comfort of their
home office before heading on to the field, the ISARIA-MODULE now offers the ideal
solution. In this module, the farmer can set all the key job parameters at home (e.g. choice
of application mode, setting the upper or lower limit …) and also have an optimum
management zone map created for the job as well. The completed job can then be
transferred to the ISARIA terminal via Wi-Fi or mobile Internet. Alternatively, the job can
be loaded via USB stick.
PRESS RELEASE 08th November 2015
Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Dorfstraße 7, 85653 Großhelfendorf
There is now also an ideal solution for creating the management zone map. A lot of farmers
still do not have any geo referenced maps showing the yield potential of their fields or
sites. The ISARIA-MODUL now offers the ideal solution. A management zone map can
capture
— Multi-annual satellite photos
— Yield monitoring from the combine harvester,
— Digital soil ratings,
— Soil sampling or
— Field catalogue evaluations
guaranteeing an exact determination of the yield potential. The more data the system gets,
the better crop farming can be optimised and stepped up. But even multi-annual satellite
photos provide sufficient basic information for the map.
For documentation purposes and for graphical display, the measuring and application data
of processed jobs can again be reloaded into the ISARIA-MODUL. The zone map created
and some key job values (e.g. minimum, maximum and average application amount) are
displayed there and can be exported to a clearly arranged document with just a few mouse
clicks. This makes the job management and documentation very easy. "The system can be
operated intuitively," said farmer Carl Koehler, summarising his experience with the
ISARIA.
In order to adapt the system to the farmers’ needs our plant production experts who have
made experiences with the ISARIA system by their own will give appropriate support.
Advantages of ISARIA-MODULE
— Comfortable job management for the ISARIA from your home office
— Creating and embedding the perfect yield potential map
— Easy job file transfer to the ISARIA terminal via Wi-Fi, mobile Internet or USB stick
— Reading back the measuring and application data of jobs for evaluation and
documentation
— Creation of a clearly arranged document (e.g. PDF) for documentation purposes

PRESS RELEASE

PROFI – Soil sampling technology by Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik enhanced with new features
New generation of soil sampling devices by Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik
- determination and record of penetration resistance -
The Precision Farming specialist Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik presents as a new standard
feature on its fully automated PROFI-line devices: the given opportunity to determine and
to record a depth profile of the penetration resistance. Thanks to that root ability and soil
compaction of the different layers can be easily determined. Furthermore due to the soil
sampling rings a broad variety of soil parameters can be diagnosed as soil type, field
capacity or humus content and more.
The benefits for the user are clearly visible: For each sample position an individual
penetration resistance curve will be recorded. The system operates continuously without
any interruption. Unregulated pressure as like for all the other conventional hand guided
Penetrologgers does not occur. During the drill process: on the display the penetration
resistance curve is visualized.
Proven control unit and handling
The PROFI devices are equipped with proportional valves which allow smooth and accurate
operation. The sensor technology is water-proof (IP67) and therefore absolutely suitable
for rough conditions. Control, data recording as well as GPS connection is accomplished by
a tablet-pc (terminal). The geo-referenced data will be recorded in CSV-format which
provides the flexibility to apply post processing with any available GIS-program. Digital
maps which contain the hand marked sampling points can be imported into the PROFI
device and via the user-friendly navigation menu software the operator will be guided in
the field to the coordinates.
PRESS RELEASE 08th November 2015
Fritzmeier Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Dorfstraße 7, 85653 Großhelfendorf
The tablet-pc (terminal) allows the operator to control and to monitor the drilling during
operation at any time. The system provides an automatic layer separation (0-30cm/31-
60cm/61-90cm). The current depth of the auger is determined by the total amount of drill
rotations. Any mechanical adjustments are obsolete. Additional information as in-time drill
depth, total amount of drill holes made or diagnostic of the sensors is permanently
monitored during the whole process. The PROFI devices can be connected to any hydraulic
system which provides more than 100 bar of hydraulic pressure.
During the drill process the PROFI device will be dropped down automatically to the ground
so that once the drill will be pulled out of of the hole, the whole device is parked and
stabilized at the ground plate for smooth operation.
Transport is very easy and user friendly – the hydraulic cylinder needs to be folded and
the mechanical safety bolt needs to be locked. The special hardened auger guarantees a
long-term durability. The PROFI detects overload situations that may be caused for
example by stones in the ground or by soil compaction layers which the drill cannot brake
through. In cases like this, the drill process will be stopped automatically. The collected
material can even then still be taken for further examination as the collected soil sample
is automatically stored in the appropriate container.
