Radio ekho Moscow

Russia’s leading radio station

English translation of Russian transcript of a radio interview with dr Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.

Here Piotrovsky discusses the significance and programme of art for the VI Charity Gala event on 24 June 2011:

At the VI Charity Gala event, we showed [cinema and sketches by] … Benoit for only one night, and we are showing the work of Lorenzo Quinn for several weeks. At the Charity Gala events, we sometimes show work which is not usually included in the permanent exhibition at the Hermitage. We collect the money, and we report how the money has been spent on the General Staff Building. Several millions of dollars have been raised for the General Staff Building and for museum equipment. This year we will be collecting money not for the General Staff Building, but to build up a financial endowment, and the museum will then be able to use this income in the future. This is contemporary practice; it is difficult, but it’s something that can help establish economic independence in the future.

Continuous shooting stars: new exhibition at the Hermitage

Catherine BELYAEVA

St. Petersburg - Moscow

Summer at the Hermitage has become a continuous celebration. It all began with a retrospective of the great feminist photographer, a balance of glamour and intimate documentary work, Annie Lei-bovitz (see the newspaper “Culture” № 22 from 30.06. 2011). Two weeks later, on the same day, at different venues, the museum’s director Michael Piotrowski opened three other important exhi-bitions, two of the same period, of art from Italy, Spain and Russia.

In the Nicholas Hall is the exhibition, “Painting and Sculpture in Rome during the second half of XVIII Century.” Here are 48 paint-ings and 26 sculptures from the collection of the Hermitage, the Russian museum, and the “Gatchina” and “Pavlovsk” collections. In his exhibition launch speech, when cutting the ribbons, Piotrowski joked that this exhibition will amuse Russian people, the owners of the collection. The best Italian art, created in Rome, about Rome, in the XVIII century, which had been immediately transported to St. Petersburg and kept intact.

In the Twelve Room, a darkly lit space, (which was a deliberate mystical suggestion) an exhibition opened continuing the theme that began six months ago of work from the Prado Museum. It is called “dialogues: Baroque Paintings from Museums in Andalusia”. In the centre of the exhibition are paintings of the southern region of Spain, Andalusia, the heyday of Spanish art in the XVII century, “The Golden Age”.

(paragraphs about works on display)

The third opening on this crazy day took place not in a solemn gallery room, but in another part of the Museum - a courtyard near the Hermitage Theater, where there is an outdoor exhibition of two large sculptures by Lorenzo Quinn. An alternative location for the giant sculptures could not be found, so there was no major public announcement about the launch of this exhibition. Anyone who wants to see the work is taken by employees into the garden on a secret staircase, but public tours are not provided. Neverthe-less, the work of Lorenzo Quinn at the Hermitage is one more

step on the way to a Museum of Modern Art way of thinking. Sam Quinn (who works for the American sculptor of Mexican descent) was present at the opening ceremony, and said that he was terri-bly proud of the fact that the works are on display under one roof with Canova and Annie Leibovitz.

Sculptor Lorenzo Quinn is son of the famous actor Anthony Quinn. For half of his life he and his brothers and sisters were forced to fight in the shadow of his popular father, and to make a name for himself in art, and generally to be seen to achieve any-thing on their own has been hard. One of his two works - “Leap of Faith” - was first put on public display in Petersburg, and is on sale with London’s Halcyon Gallery. […]. The second work - “The Hand of God” - is about the devoted son of the sculptor, and one of a series of works related to the vulnerability of children to all sorts of dangers.

The sculpture exhibition was timed to coincide with the VI Charity Gala Reception at the Hermitage Museum to raise funds for the restoration of the East Wing of the General Staff Building and the creation of a Museum of Art XIX - XXI century - one of the most important projects carried out by the Hermitage for its 250th an-niversary in 2014. The sculptures will be on display in St. Peters-burg until September 30.

Lorenzo Quinn at the Hermitage

dates: 22.06.2011 to 30.09.2011

In the internal courtyard of the Great Hermitage are exhibited two sculptures by Lorenzo Quinn: 1) Leap of Faith; and 2) the Hand of God. Lorenzo Quinn is of Italian descent, but works in London, and is showing his work in Russia for the first time.

The exhibition of the sculptures was timed to coincide with the VI Charity gala reception at the Hermitage Museum which seeks to raise funds for the restoration of the East Wing of the General Staff and to create a museum of 20th and 21st century art. This is one of the Hermitage’s most important projects to mark its 250th anniversary in 2014.

The exhibition is part of the project, “Hermitage 20/21”, which is a major program to expand the 20th and 21st century art collec-tions, and which seeks to help the Hermitage acquire works by contemporary Western artists. The curator is Ekaterina Lopatkina, of the department of Contemporary Art of the State Hermitage. The exposition was made in cooperation with Halcyon Gallery, London.

‘6th Annual International Charity Reception’

www.hermitagemuseum.org [Translation from the Russian text]

On June 24, 2011 the Hermitage VI International Charity Recep-tion took place. The money collected will help to finance the restoration of the East wing of the General Staff Building, which houses the galleries of 19th, 20th and 21st century art, one of the most important projects carried out by the State Hermitage for its 250th anniversary.

The Chairpersons of the Honorary Committee of the Internation-al Charity Gala Reception are Valentina Matvienko, Governor of St. Petersburg; Alexander Avdeev, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation; Alexei Kudrin, Minister of Finance of the Russian Fed-eration; Prince Romanov; Vladimir Potanin, President of ‘Interros’; and Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the Hermitage Museum.

The evening reception began with a welcoming cocktail at the newly renovated halls of the General Staff Building. Guests saw a striking new museum space, the Grand Staircase and rooms inside the 4th and 5th courtyards of the Rossi buildings. The Admiralty Orchestra of the Leningrad Naval Base made the evening truly special and grandiose. Guests were able to explore the interior of the installation, ‘Red Wagon’, created by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, which was made as a present to the State Hermitage Museum.

At the Piquet Hall, 40 works and costume sketches by Benoit, cre-ated for the film ‘Napoleon’ by A. Hans of 1927, and the film itself,

were shown to the guests. Palace Square represents the memory of Russia’s military and national history, epitomised by the General Staff Building and the Winter Palace, and thus it was suggested that the theme of this year’s ball should be ‘War and Peace’. Every detail and mood of the evening was reminiscent of the era por-trayed in the great novel by Leo Tolstoy.

From the General Staff Building, the guests moved on to the Winter Palace, where in the Grand Courtyard, the sculptures of one of the leading artists of the 20th century, Henry Moore, were officially presented.

The Jordan Gallery of the Winter Palace, and the newly renovated Embassy Staircases welcomed the visitors with their beautiful light. The halls of the Winter Palace showed a number of temporary exhibitions, such as ‘Roman Paintings and Sculptures of the 18th Century’, which features the works of painters such as Pompeo Batoni, Raph Mengs, and sculptures by Antonio Canova, Jean-Antoine Houdon and European masters, who lived and worked in the ‘eternal city’ in the era of the formation and development of Neo-classicism.

In contrast to the exhibition of classical art, Annie Leibovitz, one of the most talented photographers of our time, presented her works. These included around 100 photographs, selected espe-cially for the State Hermitage exhibition.

Continuing the theme of the War of 1812, for the first time since before the Revolution, a ball took place in the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace with the Polonaise from Petr Tchaikovsky’s ‘Eugene Onegin’. The State Hermitage Orchestra was conducted by Cap-tain Alexei Karabanov.

Restoration work has been completed on the famous ‘Peacock’ clock, which was unveiled to guests. At midnight, the ‘Peacock’ clock sounded, signalling the final part of the evening. Guests were led down a staircase, to the Hermitage Courtyard, where they were shown works by contemporary sculptor, Lorenzo Quinn.

The State Hermitage Museum Ball was supported by JT Interna-tional, Gazprombank, Intarsia, the Cultural Foundation of Hennessy, and the Blavatnik Family Foundation.

The VI International Charity Reception took place a few days ago at The Hermitage, with the support of Tatler magazine. The evening began with welcoming cocktails at the newly renovated halls of the General Staff Building. Guests were able to explore the interior of the installation, ‘Red Wagon’, created by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov.

Guests were then invited to the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace where sculptures of one of the greatest artists of the XX century, Henry Moore, were presented to them. Later the guests were invited in to the Jordan Gallery and the newly renovated Embassy Stairs, where, among the classical art exhibits, is now an exhibition of one of the most talented photographers of our time, Annie Leibovitz.

‘Annie Leibovitz: Life of a photographer’, is a retrospective of Lei-bovitz’s works from 1990 to2005. Around 100 photographs from different periods were selected: magazine photo shots, advertising photography, as well as personal photographs which depict the artist’s family and friends.

“For Tatler it is important that St. Petersburg is seen as not only the the capital of culture, but also the city that makes steps towards becoming a high society capital. It was in Saint Peters-burg where The Assemnbly of Peter the Great was established. Hence, the phrase ‘Capital Style’, refers not to Moscow but to St. Petersburg. We are very pleased that now, three centuries later, this tradition is being restored, and it happens in one of the most magical places in the city - the State Hermitage. We support this noble undertaking, not in a formal manner, but with our heart and soul,” said the Chief Editor of Tatler Russia, Ksenia Solovyova.

The opening ceremony was organised especially for the guests of this Charity Reception with the accompaniment of the Admiralty Orchestra of the Leningrad Naval Base. In the evening, the guests had a chance to view 40 works and costume sketches by Benoit, created for the film ‘Napoleon’ by A. Hans (1927), and to watch the film itself.

All the guests, along with well known artists from the Marinsky Theater, participated in the annual ball, which opened with a Polonaise from Petr Tchaikovsky’s ‘Eugene Onegin’.

The evening concluded when Lorenzo Quinn presented his sculp-tures located in the Hermitage Courtyard.

The event was attended by: Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Janis Kunel-lis, Michel Coudray, Mario Kodonyato,Lorenzo Quinn, Alexander Sokurov, patrons Len and Emily Blavatnik, david Booth, Robert delzell, Natalia Kosova, Helen Heinz, Larissa Zelkova, Mikhail Ba-zhenov, Alex Germanovich, Eugene Gurevich, Valerii, Izraylit, Viktor Smirnov, Karin Hagen, dmitry Pankin, Yuri Laptev, Olga Sviblova, Mikhail Kamensky, Yevgeny Satanovsky, Michael Mindlin Georgi Krasnyansky, collectors and gallery owners Paul Green, William Mcdougall, Helen and Catherine Zhukovs, dmitry and dorrit Romanov, Princess Gudroyt.

A dinner and night tour of the Hermitage - a pipe dream, or fantasy on the verge of illusion?

But it still happens: last week, the director of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg opened its halls to the guests of the International Charity Reception to support and raise funds for the restoration of the eastern wing of the General Staff Building and the creation of a museum of art of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

The event brought together representatives of aristocratic families (including dorrit Romanov) and art professionals.

This year, the 6th annual event was held with the support of Tatler magazine. Before champagne, fine dining, and waltzes, the guests went to the Winter Palace where they explored a number of art exhibitions including, the installation, ‘Red Wagon’, by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov.

At the recently restored Embassy Staircase, guests were shown the exhibition ‘Annie Leibovitz: Life Photographer’, a retrospec-tive of photographs since 1990 until 2005, including one hundred selected images from magazines, advertising campaigns, as well as the author’s personal photographs.
