Owerview

Winter Biology Students inEurope (WiBioSE) Conference wasan international student's scientificconference held in Serbia in early 2014and it gathered around 50 of Europe'stop students in area of biological sci-ences. Participants came from 14 dif-ferent countries for a whole week staypacked with various activities.

The rich scientific part focusedon all fields of biological science, butthe program also included many dif-ferent social and (inter)cultural ac-tivities.

The event was successfully organ-ized by Faculty of Biology, University ofBelgrade and its two student's organi-zations – the Student's Parliament andthe Students Association – supportedin addition with Serbian society ofmedical mycology and generouslyhosted by the Town of Arandjelovac.

WiBioSE is a part of muchgreater community behind Sym-BioSE (Symposium of Biology Stu-dents in Europe).

Day 1

First day was intendedonly for arrivals and check-in, and it of course couldn'tgo without a traditionallywarm Serbian welcome.Even though some of theparticipants had troublestravelling because of thebad weather, everyone gotto the hotel safe and sound

for a nice welcome party inthe evening. Throughoutthe day, the venue wasbeing set up for the follow-ing days, while the partici-pants and organizers wereall together enjoying somecasual hangout time andgetting to know each other.

Day 2

First working day wasquite busy. It started withthe official opening cere-mony and opening lecture,which was followed by thecross-town treasure hunt inArandjelovac – a way foreveryone to have a goodand memorable peek tovenue surroundings, as well

as first-hand experience in anew country and some un-forgettable fun moments,impressions and a nice timespent together. Later after-noon was reserved for a sci-entific session inBiochemistry and MolecularBiology. It all ended with alate-hours party.

Day 3

Between the morningsession in Immunology andMicrobiology and the after-noon session in BiologicalAnthropology "wibionts"were taken to see the majornatural and historic sitesaround the town – Risovacacave, Maricevica trenchnear Orasac, Topola and fi-

nally Oplenac. Late evening was dedicated to country pre-sentations – a nice activitywhere participants from dif-ferent countries bring up thediscussion and show some in-teresting facts about their ownculture, after they all had achance to get introduced toSerbian culture and tradition.

Day 4

Morning session wasPhysiology and Biophysicsand after that there was theposter session and someworkshops as well. Causal-ity was brought in withWiBioSE games, a fun activ-ity that was only a warm-upfor the great night out to alocal kafana, giving the guests

a lifetime experience ofnightlife in Serbia. Qualitydrinks, live music and con-tinuous dancing were dosedjust right and it gave every-one a proper boost for tom-morow’s whole day trip.

Day 5

On the fifth day the Con-ference had its working visitto the University of Bel-grade. Top biomedical lec-turers gave their talks andhad a live discussion withthe participants. Rest of thetime in Belgrade was spentthrough a major city tour in-cluding the National Assem-

bly building, Skadarlija,Kalemegdan, Knez Mihailovapedestrian zone and manyother famous Belgrade sights.Finally, great day waswrapped up with a gala din-ner at riverside restaurantwith a magnificent view rightfrom down under on the200 meters high Ada Bridge.

Day 6

Session in Ecology andEnvironmental Science wasfollowed by a very usefulkeynote talk on careers andperspectives. In the after-noon, the Conference wasofficially closed and awardswere given to best presen-ters. After discussing the fu-ture and giving some credit

to the organizers, partici-pants were able to enjoyWiBioSE farewell party andonce again put smiles ontheir faces before depar-ture. Taken together, every-one agreed this winterscientific adventure was abig success.
