I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say we are a celebrity-obsessed society. How many different reality shows are there? How many competitions to be a star? Attention! Attention! We all have to be the center of attention. So it strikes us as odd that Jesus continuously tells people and demons not to tell others about him or who he really is and especially not that he is the Messiah. This so-called Messianic Secret has been argued and discussed among scripture scholars for centuries. There is a consensus among scholars that Jesus was concerned with the general understanding of who and what was the Messiah. Many thought he was to be a great king like David and would throw out the Romans, the corrupt priests and lawyers while establishing a new and just society. No doubt, Jesus was intending a just and compassionate society, but his means was not through the use of violence, rather through conversion. At his death he wanted people to see it was the individual’s self-giving that was the power to transform the world which was stronger than any individual king. I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say we are a celebrity-obsessed society. How many different reality shows are there? How many competitions to be a star? Attention! Attention!
