Presidents’ Message

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I would like to welcome all of you who have come from all Brazilian states and the most diverse countries to join us and help us to accomplish one of the most important scientific meetings of Dentistry in 2012. This is the first time that two of the most outstanding events of the world of Dentistry have been put together: The World Congress of Dental Trau-matology, and the Penn Endo Global Symposium.

There are many people that deserve our sincere thanks. It’s because of them and their dedication and devotion that this event is a reality. Since 2010, when Brazil won the right to host the 17th World Congress of Dental Traumatology, an enormous amount of work and effort has been invested to ensure your expectations are met for one of the most ambi-tious scientific programs ever conducted in Dentistry.

It is wonderful that this historic meeting of Dentistry occurs in the city of Rio de Janeiro, at the same time that our city has been preparing to host the final of the FIFA World Cup in 2014, and the 2016 Olympic Games. It is my desire that you enjoy 17th World Congress on Dental Traumatology, but I also encourage you to experience the history, the amazing nature with its beaches, mountains and forest, the numerous bars and restaurants, and unparalleled warmth of the people of this truly wonderful city.

The main purpose of having Penn Endo Global Symposium worldwide is to share the Penn Endo philosophy with those who are interested in endodontics. University of Pennsyvania is the place where modern endodontics was born and where many leaders in the endodontics, first taught by the late Dr. Louis I Grossman, came from. It is more important now than ever to have such biologically based Symposium since we are inundated with commercialization of our field. This is our the 6th Symposium. The past Symposium in Taiwan, Korea, Germany Poland and Japan have been hugely successful. The Penn Endo family is happy and honored to have the 6th Symposium in Brazil where Endodontic is robust and many dentists are really interested in the field. Thank you for your enthusiastic support.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 17th World Congress of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT).I would like to particularly thank Dr Renato Lenzi and his organizing team for the great efforts and marvellous way in which they have risen to this challenge putting together such a wonderful event. As we all can see the program is outstanding. Thank you to all presenters for contributing to this meeting.IADT is a global association bringing together specialists, general dentists, and others who are interested in dental traumatology. Our mission is to promote optimal prevention and treatment services in this very complex multidisciplinary area in dentistry. Judging from the program this will really be achieved and I trust you will have a profitable week both scientifically and socially. Rio de Janeiro is the perfect city for a congress and I am convinced we will enjoy these days together. We have a unique chance to interact with and make new friends from all over the world.

Tribute to Jens Ove Andreasen

Written by M. Tsukiboshi, Immediate Past President, IADT

One hundred years after the birth of G.V. Black (1836-1915) a dental genius who developed the foundation of contemporary dentistry, God sent another genius to the earth to save traumatized teeth.

One can only wonder how dentists today would be able to properly care for patients with traumatic dental injuries without access to the large amount of information made available from the numerous research projects and clinical observations conducted over more than five decades by Jens Ove Andreasen. The fact that dental traumatology is still not widely recognized may be related to a failure in dental education in many instances and points to the need for a concerted effort to share the extensive information currently available.

In my own situation I feel that I first became a real dentist after reading his Dr. Andreasen’s articles and books. In addition the opportunity to learn directly from him has been extremely valuable in developing skills and ideas in dental traumatology and in dentistry in general.

Jens Ove Andreasen, DDS., Odont.Dr. h.c. (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden), Odont. Dr.h.c. (Dental School, Newcastle University, England), Odont. Dr.h.c. (Oulo Medical and Dental Faculty, Finland), F.R.C.S. (Fellow Royal College Surgeons, London, England) one of the founding members of the International Association of Dental Traumatology, has devoted his professional life and career to the problem of dental trauma. He has edited and co-edited 10 textbooks, including the undisputed “bible” on dental trauma, Textbook and Color Atlas of Traumatic Injuries to the Teeth. His research and clinical experience have resulted in nearly 300 journal publications, covering topics such as dental traumatology, tooth replantation and autotransplantation, tooth eruption and tooth impaction. For his many contributions to dentistry in general and traumatology specifically, he has received numerous awards from various dental organizations and three honorary doctorate degrees. He is in demand as a speaker and has been invited to lecture in over 40 countries.

I am extremely grateful that I have had the opportunity to associate with, and learn from, an incredible human being – Jens Ove Andreasen.

Pre-Congress

Wednesday, September 19 Room - Segóvia I , II, III and IV

8:30 a.m. - 8:40 a.m. Meeting Opening - Syngcuk Kim

8:40 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Biofilm in Dental Diseases - Denis Kinane Chronic infectious diseases are increasingly recognized as being initiated and perpetuated by microbial biofilms. Oral diseases such as periodontitis and endodontic disease are now appreciated as biofilm diseases. Administration of Endodontics lesions should be viewed under the light of new information on management of microbial biofilms. This presentation will address the new findings on biofilms and how this impacts endodontic management.

9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Revascularization, Tissue Engineering and Pulp Regeneration - The Future is Here - Frank Setzer Revascularization is now an accepted procedure for immature infected teeth with apical periodontitis. If the environment within the tooth can be disinfected and maintained sealed from the oral cavity, healing of the apical periodontitis will occur and new vital tissue will grow into the pulp space, resulting in thickened root walls and a closed apex. The lecture reviews the biological principles, appropriate conditions and the practical management that are necessary for a predictable outcome. In addition, possible future advances will be discussed, including synthetic scaffolds with anti-bacterial and growth stimulating factors in a system that may make vital pulp therapy, respectively pulp regeneration more appealing than pulpectomy.

10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Coffee break

11 a.m. - 12 a.m.

Limits of the Endodontic Treatment: Management of Compromised Cases - Eudes Gondim With the incorporation of new techniques, Endodontics has become more predictable in the 21st century than ever before. This lecture reviews the latest updates in endodontics and their incorporation in private practice. A modern practicable concept for the treatment of apical periodontitis in difficult cases is presented including adequate biomechanical instrumentation and disinfection. For cases with unsuccessful primary root canal treatment it will be discussed when to choose surgical endodontics over non-surgical retreatment or implants, focusing on the predictability as well as the management of compromised cases, including perio-endodontic lesions and situations with anatomical and technical limitations. The prognosis of implants and endodontic treatment is compared and modern techniques and advances in endodontics that have impact on treatment planning are discussed to allow for objective decision-making.

12 a.m. - 2 p.m. Lunch Time

2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Treatment of Apical Periodontitis - Biological Principles of Endodontic Therapy - Martin TropeAn endodontist must have a solid biologic basis for all treatments that he/she performs. All new techniques or technologies must be assessed in the context of their ability to achieve the biologic objective to ensure maximal success. The biologic requirements for predictably successful endodontics will be presented. The newest technologies in endodontics that assist in attaining these biologic goals are reviewed. In the context of the biological requirements, apical sizes, irrigation technique and materials, the advisability of one-step or two-step endodontic procedures and filling techniques and materials will be discussed for the different diagnostic categories.

3:30 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. Coffee break

4:15 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.

Instrumentation and Obturation - Clinical Strategies for Microbial Control in Primary Treatment and Retreatment - Gilberto Debelian All endodontic procedures whether performed in an institutional setting or in private practice should be based on a biologic end point. Thus all new techniques or technologies must be assessed in the context of their ability to achieve the biologic objectives to ensure maximal success. There is ample support in the literature for biological and clinical techniques that will lead to a high probability of success for teeth with both vital and infected canals, despite the variety of putative endodontic pathogens that are with symptomatic, asymptomatic and refractory infectious cases. Too many treatments, however, are carried out on the basis of convenience and/or perceived radiographic esthetics. Based on the available evidence for biologic treatment approaches for vital vs. infected teeth a practical guide to follow these principles in preventing or eliminating these infections will be presented.

Thursday, September 20 Room - Segóvia I , II, III and IV

8:30 a.m. 10 a.m.

Endodontic Microsurgery - Syngcuk Kim and Samuel Kratchman Modern endodontic practice must provide both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options. Many times nonsurgical retreatments are carried out although a microsurgical retreatment would be the better choice. To clarify why certain cases will never heal, the reasons for nonsurgical failures are explained and the basics of endodontic microsurgery are reviewed. Contemporary endodontic microsurgery is fundamentally different from historical apical surgery in terms of instruments, materials, biological principles and, most importantly, the success rate. The important steps in microsurgery are demonstrated by images and video clips, so that the participants will have a clear understanding of surgical procedures and principles.

10 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Coffee break

12 a.m. - 1 p.m. Outcome Assessment of Surgery and Root Canal Treatment - Bekir Karabucak

10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.Hands on Root Canal Preparation 1- Hands on Biorace - Gilberto Debelian and Kleber Carvalho2- Hands on Reciproc - Eudes Gondim Jr.
