Dear Friends:

I am pleased to report that 2011 was another highly successful year for Woodbury University.

Despite continuing domestic and global economic challenges, Woodbury once again distinguished itself by 1) maintaining positive enrollment trends, 2) achieving its 15th consecutive year of positive operating results, and 3) expanding both the breadth and the quality of its academic programs.

Other specific highlights of 2011 can be summarized as follows:• The establishment of three new academic majors in the fast growing fields of Filmmaking, Game Art & Design and Media Technology.

• The undergraduate Architecture program being ranked #7 and our graduate Architecture program being ranked #10 among all colleges and universities in the Western Region of the United States. • Woodbury being listed in the 2011 edition of “Colleges of Distinction,” a national publication for students and parents selecting colleges and universities.

• Partnering with Mercedes-Benz, Peking University in China and Free University in Berlin to offer an innovative MBA program for Mercedes-Benz managers.

In 2011, the Board of Trustees also announced a nationwide Presidential Search to succeed President Kenneth R. Nielsen, who plans to retire on June 30, 2012, after 16 years of remarkably distinguished service and achievements at Woodbury University. Dr. Nielsen will be sorely missed, but his many accomplishments will continue to benefit our new President and the University for many years to come.

As alumni, parents, and friends, your financial support of Woodbury is critical to our future success and to the life long success of our deserving students. Typically, over 80% of our students need financial aid to complete their education. Other pressing needs include gifts to build endowment and unrestricted gifts to help fund specific academic programs.

The Board of Trustees joins me in thanking you for your most generous support, as listed in this year’s Annual Report, and encouraging you to keep Woodbury “top of mind” as you think about your future philanthropic priorities.

Sincerely,

Robert W. Kummer, Jr.Chairman, Board of Trustees

Dear Friends,

As we look back on 2011 in this annual report, what stands out to me about the past year at Woodbury University is the remarkable capacity of the Woodbury community to create opportunities. The heart of those opportunities resides in the dreams of our robust student body, outstanding faculty members, dedicated staff, successful alumni, dedicated Trustees and generous friends.

Each of these constituencies supports our Woodbury education that is focused on innovation, creativity, and forward-thinking leadership. Our academic excellence is grounded and rooted in a collaborative pursuit of knowledge where professors and students are partners in the learning process and they use practical information based on theory. Our faculty, both adjunct and full time, have rich experiences that they bring to the classroom that goes beyond book learning. Part of our current challenge is going beyond traditional classroom boundaries to build a global gateway for our students so that they understand their place in the world. In California, private universities such as Woodbury will play an increasingly important role in meeting this need as the state’s public institutions of higher education struggle to meet critical demands for an educated workforce that can compete in a global economy.

In this year’s report, we are pleased to profile representative members of the Woodbury administration, faculty, and staff who help build the connections between the University and the professional and regional communities where we live and work. Through their efforts, each of these individuals is indicative of the work that brings the community to Woodbury and Woodbury to the community.

My retirement this summer means that this is the last annual report message that I write. I am confident that Woodbury’s next president will continue to expand on what we’ve already accomplished and that new ideas and new directions will be shaped to meet the needs of the future.

The future belongs to Woodbury, and every member of the Woodbury community is contributing to the future that we will all be proud of. I thank you for the opportunity that I have had to use my talents here at Woodbury University and urge you to consider the following pages of this report as evidence of the many reasons that Woodbury is confident that the future is bright. Thank you to all our valued friends and supporters, students, contributors, faculty, and staff. You’re part of something special that has endured and prospered for more than 127 years.

Sincerely,

Kenneth R. Nielsen, Ed.D.President

Building Completion Made Possible by the Generosity of the Ahmanson FoundationThe University received confirmation in April that the Ahmanson Foundation will provide $500,000 of support as a capstone to the Title V grant that the university received from the Department of Education. This generous gift will help to complete the construction of a Digital Media Studio, which will be utilized by the new filmmaking, media technology, and game design majors. The Digital Media Studio will house a stage complex, screening room, audition room and equipment cage that will total approximately 4,841 square feet. The Digital Media Studio is expected to be completed by summer 2012.

Bruce Cook, Chair of the Digital Filmmaking program said, “The completion of this building would not be possible if it wasn’t for the generous donation of the Ahmanson Foundation. We are most appreciative of the Ahmanson Foundation and its impact on Woodbury.”

In the last ten years, the Ahmanson Foundation has been a constant and generous supporter of the University. Prior to this current grant, the Foundation provided support during the Building Initiative which led to the naming of the Ahmanson Main Space located in the architecture complex.

To learn more about the digital filmmaking program, please contact Bruce Cook at 818.252.5191 or email [email protected].

Fabric Fund CreatedAlumna and Board of Trustees member, Judith D. Tamkin ’49, generously initiated a fabric fund for senior fashion design students. Tamkin’s gift will now allow fashion students the opportunity to shop at some of the best fabric stores in Los Angeles. Seniors also will learn a bit about philanthropy. One outfit from each of their collections will be donated to the silent auction at the fashion show benefit in April with proceeds going back into the fabric fund for the next class.

For more information on the Fashion Design program or how you can contribute to the fabric fund, please contact Rose Nielsen at 818.252.5230 or [email protected].

AprilWoodbury Makes Colleges of Distinction List and was mentioned on The Today ShowWoodbury was included in the most recent Colleges of Distinction publication that featured 200 U.S. Colleges and Universities for their level of engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. Making it onto this illustrious list led to the University’s inclusion in NBC’s The Today Show list of colleges that families should visit while vacationing in Los Angeles. Woodbury was mentioned along with UCLA, USC, Occidental, Claremont College, Pitzer, Pomona and Harvey Mudd.

MayRalph Rucci receives Designer of the Year AwardThe 47th Annual Fashion Show Benefit, Mobius: Infinite Variations, took place on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. MarchDine Like a DiplomatThe Careers & Alumni Office held their annual etiquette dinner, now entitled Dine Like a Diplomat on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport. The event was open to all students, but attracted a majority of business students. The event was facilitated by Woodbury School of Business faculty member, Dr. Alexandra Saba. Dr. Saba is a registered protocol instructor. The evening began with an instructed cocktail reception, which taught the students how to network with a drink and/or appetizers in hand. This was an excellent opportunity for students to meet alumni and corporate representatives that were in attendance specifically to make the event as much of a real world experience as possible, not just a learning opportunity with fellow students.

This year’s etiquette dinner was the most successful to date with over 90 in attendance. Tickets were below cost, which included appetizers and a three course meal. A free shuttle service was provided from the school to the hotel and back at the end of the evening. Enterprise Holdings Inc. was the corporate sponsor, providing support to offset the cost of the event. All attendees received a certificate of completion that can be included in their portfolios.

JuneAlumni Event at the Hollywood Bowl The Alumni Association has promoted an evening at the Hollywood Bowl for the past three summers. According to James Morse, Director of Alumni & Events, “It is one of our most success-ful events with generally over 100 in atten-dance.” The attendees range from young alumni with children to older alumni and also faculty and staff who all come together to enjoy an evening of entertainment at the Hollywood Bowl. This year’s featured event was the Grease Sing Along, which took place on Friday, June 24th beginning with a picnic in a reserved location followed by the show. We offered a discounted price of $25.00, which included the picnic.

This yearly event is a great way to connect with fellow alumni, as well as faculty and staff in a social setting while enjoying some wonderful entertainment at the historic Hollywood Bowl. If you plan on going to the Hollywood Bowl this coming summer, why not go on the evening that the Woodbury community is gathering together? Keep your eye out for the promotion of this year’s event. For more information regarding upcoming alumni events, please contact James Morse, Director of Alumni & Events at [email protected] or 818.252.5248.

JulyWoodbury Goes To TahitiSixteen students, two of whom were graduate architecture students, four interior architecture students and ten undergraduate architecture students ventured off to Tahiti for a study abroad experience this summer. Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, Masters of Architecture department chair, and Randy Stauffer, chair of the Interior Architecture department, were the co-instructors for the program. It was an eleven week studio in which four weeks were spent on the islands of Tahiti and six weeks back on the Burbank campus. The students departed on May 15th and returned on June 13th. Studio on the Burbank campus ended the last week of July.

According to Wahlroos-Ritter, “The project was to design a pre-fabricated kit-house for the islands of French Polynesia. The project was located on the island of Moorea, at the Gump Station which is a research station run by UC Berkeley. The students’ assignments were to conduct field work, research, data collection, measurement, interviews, drawing and design, which allow the students to develop specific skill sets of observation, transformation, and synthesis.”

“It was more than an influential experience, says Kevin Wild, fifth year architecture student. “Just take a look at my thesis. It was my best architecture experience thus far.” For Wild, there is nothing like interacting with the culture, being fully immersed in it. To think about design and culture from what you read in a book or are taught in the classroom is one thing, but to actually experience it is another. You won’t be able to fully understand the culture until you experience it firsthand. Wild hopes that similar trips continues for years to come. Such trip opens people’s eyes to a whole new way of thinking about design.

SeptemberLegendary Actor Receives the Ray Bradbury Creativity AwardThe Woodbury University Library Associates bestowed veteran actor Malcolm McDowell with the Ray Bradbury Creativity Award on Sunday, September 25th. Mr. McDowell, perhaps best known as the iniquitous Alex DeLarge, in A Clockwork Orange, a role for which the American Film Institute named the 12th greatest movie villain of all time, has starred in a myriad of film and TV productions. Mr. McDowell’s family and friends gathered, along with fans and film aficionados in the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium where he regaled the audience with stories drawn from his forty year career.

The purpose of the Library Associates is to focus attention on the needs of today’s library and raise money for library resources, library services, library facilities, and library technologies. For over ten years, the Woodbury University Library Associates has sponsored a series of lectures. The fall lecture features the presentation of the Ray Bradbury Creativity Award, named for the famed author of the science-fiction classics Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles. The award recipient is determined by Mr. Bradbury each year, along with the input of the Library Associates Board.

AugustStart of the Digital Filmmaking ProgramAugust marks the beginning of a new major offered at Woodbury, Digital Filmmaking, thanks in part to a multimillion dollar Title V grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Digital Filmmaking falls under the School of Media, Culture & Design and is chaired by Dr. Bruce Cook. Twenty three students enrolled this semester in the Digital Filmmaking program, which surpassed the target enrollment of eighteen. The majority of students are local area freshmen. However, the program also attracted students from as far away as Alaska and the Netherlands. The first class of Digital Filmmaking majors will graduate in May 2013.

According to Dr. Cook, Woodbury is unique to other colleges that offer filmmaking degrees because we are not “silo-ized.” The goal here is to allow students to cross program boundaries by working with fashion design students for costumes, architecture and interior design students to build sets, business students to pitch, market and distribute their films, while animation and graphic design students can add visual elements to the finished product. Plus, students are able to use a camera right away, unlike ones experienced in most film programs. Dr. Cook’s goal for the students is to “have their own creative voice

while working in collaborative teams. The technical skills are easy to teach, the technique of working collaboratively is not.” By working with students from other programs, he hopes to build the students’ soft skills needed to work in teams. Dr. Cook’s plan is to make Woodbury a magnet for international students as well. His ultimate goal is to create a “one world, one cinema environment, crossing the international boundaries of filmmaking.”

The filmmaking students were enrolled in the following classes for the fall semester: Storyboarding for Film, Film History from 1895-1950, Intermediate Digital Filmmaking and Advanced Screenwriting. There have been some amazing results from these classes in just one semester. The Digital Filmmaking class created four short films that have been picked up as webisodes for the SyFy Channel. Everyone that was enrolled in the Screenwriting course completed a feature length screenplay by the end of the semester, not an easy feat. The future is looking very bright for this film program.

OctoberFounders’ Week Bob and Dianne Bowne were the recipients of the 10th Annual Movers & Shapers Award that recognizes those who have dem-onstrated leadership and have made significant contributions to the Burbank community. The event was held on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 11:30am on the Burbank campus. The Movers & Shapers Award Luncheon is part of the annual Founders’ Week celebration. Friend of the University, Rev. Larry Stamper served as emcee. Robert “Bud” Ovrom, former Burbank City Manager, last year’s Movers & Shapers award recipient, Michael Cusumano, Vic Georgino and Council member Emily Gabel-Luddy all spoke highly of the Bownes’ character and dedication to both family and civic service.

Bob Bowne has been mayor of Burbank twice while he served on city council between 1984 and 1995. He was president of the Burbank Board of Education and secretary of the Burbank Glendale Airport Authority. Bowne was a long-time member of the Providence St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation board of directors and served as president of the Burbank Bar Associa-tion and recently served as president of the Lakeside Golf Club. Dianne Bowne works as her husband’s paralegal and has been an active volunteer in many community organizations like La Providencia Guild of Children’s Hospital, Burbank Noon Kiwanis, National Charity League – Burbank Chapter, and Parent Teacher Associations.

NovemberCarl Benz Academy AnnouncedWoodbury University is partnering with Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd. and Mercedes-Benz Auto Finance Limited in China to launch a customized MBA program under the newly established Carl Benz Academy in Beijing, China.

The three year pilot program launched on November 14 in Beijing and will be delivered globally in Beijing, Berlin, and Los Angeles through an innovative blended delivery system of distance learning and face-to-face seminars. Other university partners in the academy, named for one of the founding fathers of the automobile industry, are Peking University in China and the Free University of Berlin (Germany). Starting with a specially selected cohort of 35 students, it is anticipated that a new cohort of between 50 and 75 students will be added every year.

Woodbury’s School of Business will design and present custom-ized course content as part of the program to offer automotive-specific business administration education to Mercedes-Benz China dealer employees and managers. Woodbury’s portion of the curriculum will consist of organizational leadership, self leadership, leading a team, general marketing principles, automotive and luxury brand marketing, marketing innovation, and strategy. In October 2014, Woodbury will lead a business simulation that will serve as an optional final summation of the program in lieu of a thesis.

Klaus Maier, president of Mercedes-Benz (China) Limited said in regards to the venture, “Bringing together the best from three continents will give our Chinese executives and managers valuable global insights and provide them with practical management tools to further the development and growth of their dealerships and the Mercedes-Benz brand in China.”

The President’s Roundtable Make a Difference, Every Year…

Members of the President’s Roundtable come from different parts of our community but share a common interest in Woodbury University and our mission. They are special friends who provide annual support of $1,000 or more to the University’s schools and departments, help guide the University’s course, and ensure Woodbury’s success for years to come by providing essential contributions to University programs and needs.

The President’s Roundtable seeks to recognize those whose annual giving truly demonstrates philanthropy. The greatest benefit of membership is your impact on academic excellence. To become a member, please contact C. Damon Griffin at 818.252.5289 or [email protected].

While Woodbury University has been serving the Southern California region and nation for 128 years, its history as a non-profit institution is less than one third of that time. This year, Woodbury celebrates 40-years as a non-profit institution – an effort that was achieved under President Dora Kirby. To commemorate this milestone, alumnus and Trustee Emeritus Leonis C. Malburg ’49 will generously match up to $1.00 of every unrestricted dollar given to the Woodbury’s Annual Fund until June 30, 2012.

How does the Challenge work? All new and increased gifts (gifts made prior to 2011, first-time donors, or donors who are raising the amount they gave in 2011) to Woodbury’s Annual Fund will be matched dollar for dollar.

All renewed gifts (only gifts made in 2011 but not yet in 2012) to Woodbury’s Annual Fund will be matched 50 cents for each dollar.

How are Challenge gifts recognized?1) Donors will be credited for the match amount. For example, if a donor gave $250 in 2011 and has

not yet made a gift to Woodbury in 2012, they would generate a $125 match should they renew their gift of $250 before June 30, 2012. Therefore, they are credited as giving $375.

2) Donors names will be featured on a plaque in an existing classroom that will be designated the Challenge Classroom.

3) Gifts of $1,000 or more also entitle donors to a seat in the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium.

The incentive is a fun way to encourage the entire community to help with this effort. However, the important thing to remember is that the goal of “12,000 Names” is to reconnect with our alumni and share with them the exciting changes and growth that have occurred at Woodbury over the years.

President Kenneth R. Nielsen, has launched a world-wide search focused on finding and connecting with “lost” Alumni. This is an institutional goal to find 12,000 names and addresses of living alumni who have lost touch with their alma mater.

$10 IncentiveWe are seeking 3,000 names this year and ask you to help us meet this goal. To encourage participation, we are offering a $10 incentive for each accurate, verified name and address submitted. For example, if you submit ten names and addresses that aren’t in our database, or are in the database but have incorrect mailing addresses, you will receive $100.

12,000 Names: Finding Lost Alumni

How do I submit a name and address of a lost Alumnus/a? If you know of an alum who has lost their connection with Woodbury, simply send an email to [email protected] with that person’s name, address and class year (if you know it) plus your contact details. We will then verify the name against our records and contact you if you the name and address you have provided was lost.
