Good afternoon Kings fans.

Last Saturday the boys ventured over to Walkerville. Again, the C and B grades lead by example. Both had tougher games this week but were both able to rally in their second halves and slot enough majors away to come up with the wins. The A-grade were looking much better this week. Competitive all day, but just didn’t have enough things go their way to get over the top of their Walkerville opponents.

Player Sponsorships: A reminder that EVERYONE must get a player sponsor arranged or you will need to pay the fees yourself. If players are having difficulty finding one, please come and chat to us as we may have a few suggestions for you. Saying that; it is ultimately the players responsibility to source a player sponsor. For all player sponsorship queries, please contact Nick Smerdon. [email protected] 0409 280 047.

Social Events: Coming up on May 19th is the Kings Cash Raffle at The Robin Hood Hotel. 150 tickets, $50 per ticket and your chance to win a $1000 1st prize. The $50 ticket price includes beer, wine and finger food (note: this is not dinner. Finger food only) for 3 hours while the ticket draw occurs. 2nd place wins $300 and 3rd wins $50. Speak to a board member or the people on the home game BBQ tomorrow if you’d like to buy a ticket.

This Week: This Saturday the boys are at Haslam Oval against school intercol rivals, Westminster. It will be great to see plenty of support at home once again. The weather forecast is looking tip-top for tomorrow so make sure you pop out to Haslam and support the boys.

The weather was unseasonably hot and made enormous demands on players’ levels of fitness and hydration. Despite this, the conditions at Walkerville were certainly conducive to quality football. There was certainly no excuse for missing targets and poor skills.

We started well and should’ve been further in front at quarter time.

The second quarter saw us gradually worn down despite some heroics from our backline. We were unable to generate enough clean ball through the midfield to change the flow of the game and they finally kicked two late goals to lead at the break.

The second half was very competitive. We had lots of opportunity in the third quarter but were unable to find targets inside 50. This is a significant issue for us. Even when we do get a bit of sustained possession, too often the kick doesn’t advantage our forwards or we can’t get numbers to the crumb.

We charged home in the last quarter and drew within 4 points with 5 minutes to play. We seemed to have momentum. Unfortunately, they played the last five minutes better than we did and we stumbled to a competitive loss.

Our cause was not helped by a number of injuries during the game which upset our balance. We lost Patrick Trutwin for the day during the first quarter and Nick Worrall punctured a lung in a collision at the start of the last quarter. Thankfully, he is recovering well having spent a couple of days in hospital.

Better players included Mitch Curnow who gave us first look at the ball and took a number of strong marks. Alex Breda had a lot of the ball and used his pace effectively. Jake Webster again ran hard to win plenty of possession, topping his game with a couple of goals whilst Sam Harms continued his form and had a real physical presence around the ball. Tom Evans had a strong second half and finished with four goals.

Congratulations to Sam Carruthers who made his A Grade debut on Saturday.

Very warm conditions greeted the Bkings for their Round 3 clash against Walkerville away. We spoke before the game about not being complacent and that after two big wins, another is not just going to happen.

We started quite well and lead at the first change by a couple of goals. The second quarter was quite tight but we still managed to take a 3 goal advantage into the main break. We had a few boys with head knocks and a couple struggling with the hot conditions so at half time we knew it was going to take a big effort in the second half as Walkerville were certainly in for the fight.

In the first half of the third quarter they had all the momentum and drew within one goal of us and had it not been for some great defence from Milo Mawby, Liam Switala and Nick Smerdon we could of found ourselves behind at the last change but we responded with some quick transition goals late in the third to have some breathing space (3 goals) at the final break.

The boys fought hard in the last quarter and ran over Walkerville to finish up with a comfortable 32 point win. Although we were a bit down from our first couple of weeks, we toughed it out and managed to get a good win with limited rotations off the bench due to injuries.

There were some real positives from the day, mainly the introduction of some young guns in Ollie Wood, Will Butler, Milo Mawby and Jesse Fienemann.

Wood gave us some real run and finished with 3 important goals and Butler took some strong marks and won some good contested ball. Mawby also gave us great run and was important when thrown into defence after we lost G.Fienemann to concussion.

In the middle Scotty Fischer was excellent, Neshy (3 goals) and Venks both had good games and Ollie Harms played his best game for the club this year, rucking tirelessly and taking some great contested marks around the ground. His exhaustion at the end of the game showed us how hard he worked.

Tom Sneath has his best game this year, as did Liam Switala who read the play well in defence and gave good rebound. Nick Smerdon was great for us again and has been an important leader, along with Nick Bentley, for our young backline.

This week we face our arch rivals Westminster, so get down and support all the grades as it’s a big day for the club. Let’s hope we can make it 4 in a row for the Bkings and get 3 good wins for all grades.

Cheers,

Nathan WoodsReserves Coach

We arrived at Walkerville Oval full of excitement and a sense of nostalgia, as many of us had grown up playing junior football on this very deck before us. Without knowing too much about Walkerville, we knew that we would be reasonably matched, and had a strong opportunity to add another win to our flawless tally of 2018 thus far.

It was a physical battle from the outset; bodies crashing in hard, sledging and cheapies thrown behind play. Our fresh faced youngsters appeared slightly timid at the confrontational style of play by Walkerville, as they asserted themselves onto the contest. As the half time buzzer approached, Dylan ‘Rocky’ Louca ended up exchanging blows with one of Walkerville’s scariest looking operators, seeing Rocky and 3 Walkerville players sent off. Following this indiscretion, and the relentless bullying which had been inflicted our direction for the majority of the first half, I challenged the boys to find the courage to match Walkerville at the contest, to channel this aggression towards winning the football, and kicking away in the second half. To my pleasure, the boys were able to do exactly this, which left me feeling very proud.

Duhne, Cammy Andrews and Locko slotted in very nicely for their first games of the year, each contributing strongly. It was great to have these boys on board. Harry Pepper was strong at ground level all day, and his attack on the football was exceptional. Robbo and Warren were particularly impressive down back. Honourable mentions to Dan Rusby, who appeared to injure his ankle severely – we will miss having Dan down back and are wishing him a speedy recovery. A great performance but looking to carry this form into this week’s game v Adelaide Uni.

See you then.Michael BanitsiotisC-Grade Coach

Congratulations on playing your 100th game for the Kings this weekend. How does it feel to be playing our traditional intercol rivals for the first time in the amateurs on the home deck? Have you been practising your jug skulling during the week? Cheers! Yeah looking forward to playing Westminster, had some good games with them back during the school years so should be fun. Been dreading the jug skull since last season, that’s why I only played three games last year, spent the off-season practising, hasn’t helped.

You are quite the well travelled young man. Where has been your highlight destination so far? Where are you off to next and where is your dream destination? Which country has the best food? Highlight destination would probably be Iceland, lots of cool stuff to do and see there especially the northern lights which was unreal. Don’t have anything planned at the moment but I’ve never been to South America so that would probably be next on the cards. Dream destination, I’d say on a beach somewhere warm and cruisy so maybe Greek or Croatian Islands. I’ve gotta stick to my roots and say Japan has the best food, hands down.

You used to work at the Casino as a poker dealer, are you much of a player yourself? Do you ever find yourself back there on the other side of the table playing a few hands? What is the most ridiculous thing you saw in the wee hours of the morning at the Cas? Haha yeah don’t mind the odd poker game here and there, still play a bit… Most ridiculous thing I saw was probably a bloke pissed himself at the table, didn’t care just kept playing.
