Who Is a Mentor?A mentor is someone who can help the mentee develop skills for success and long-range career planning, is able to be a good listener, is willing to share experiences and views, is willing to commit time and effort, provides an “open door” to questions and problems, points out both strengths and opportunities for improvement, and has a vested interest in the growth and development of their mentee.

Benefits to the mentor:

• Satisfaction in helping someone mature, progress, and achieve goals• Meeting and sharing experiences with other mentors• Personal ongoing support to help the mentee succeed• Personal fulfillment through contribution to the Society and the individual

Who Is a Mentee?Having a mentor can contribute to a successful and satisfying career. Without a mentor, that learning occurs mostly through trial and error. With a mentor, even experienced professionals can benefit from the experiences and expertise of someone who has withstood the trial and can help the mentee avoid the mistakes. Similarly, those new to the industry will discover that being a mentee shortens the learning curve for acquiring the skills and knowledge most critical to a fruitful career.

Benefits to the mentee:

• Discover new talents about yourself• Career satisfaction• Expand your personal network• Maximize your strengths

TOILET PAPER.A short history and interesting comments

After visiting the bathroom, or other places, where a person eliminates his waste (urine and/or feces) we know that the custom is, to wipe his behind. Today many of us, use toilet paper. But paper was not always available or was very expensive. Here is s short history of toilet paper.

Ancient documents assume that about 50 BC, Chinese made paper from bamboo which was soaked in water and pounded into a pulp. This pulp was formed into sheets and dried.

105 AD another chinese Ts’ai Lun, who is considered the inventor of the paper, used a mixture of mulberry bark, hemp, rugs and water, and mashed into a pulp. Then the water was pressed out and the sheet was hung to dry in the sun. This procedure was very slow and cost a lot. The paper produced was affordable only for leaders of the court and very wealthy persons. The Emperor was the only one who could afford to

use the product as toilet paper.

4th century BC to 5th century AD was the period when of the Roman Empire expanded and declined. They conquered a lot of territories and they were very well organized. One of the most important functions of government, besides of having a vast and trained army, was to provide fresh drinking water and the safe disposal of waste water. For these reasons, they built magnificent aqueducts and sophisticated sewer systems, many of which lasted until now. When they were building a new town, one of the first to be constructed was the bath and common latrines.

The baths and latrines were provided with a continuous flow of water from the aqueducts. Under the latrines was a stream of water to remove any human waste, and in the front of the seats, where people would sit to eliminate their waste, was a trough with running water. At each seat was also a stick and at one end was an attached ball of textile. After the person completed his mission, he would dip the stick in the trough and clean his bottom. It is interesting to mention that the Muslim population didn’t use either paper or stick for cleaning the bottom. Muslim customs require, after using the bathroom, to wash the

behind with water. Today, if you design a building with apartments for Middle East, you should provide in the toilet room a bidet or a hose bibb with H&CW and a floor drain.

Until 16th century fabrication of paper was spreading all over Europe and Middle East, and the technology changed and improved using various basic materials.

A big demand of paper was required after 1450 AD when Johannes Gutenberg, of Germany, invented the movable printing press. The European output of printed books skyrocketed into hundred millions during the following century. This expansion of access to information, influenced every major cultural, political and scientific revolutions for centuries.

The invention of movable printing press made possible mass production of knowledge. For centuries, before this invention, all written work in the human history could be copied only by hand or by slow and inefficient form of block printing. The printing press dramatically reduced the time and the cost of printing. AMERICAColonial Americans used corncob and leaves to clean where toilet paper is used today.17th Century, Henry Crane emigrated from England and is the first to become a papermaker. By 1810 USA census report, indicated over 180 paper mills which were not enough to satisfy the increasing demand of Americans. Large quantities of paper was imported from expensive European toilet paper manufacturers. As expected, American paper makers improved the technology and used more efficient prime materials, from local sources.

TOILET PAPER TRIVIABased upon surveys by toilet paper manufacturers. What 20th Century convenience is most taken for granted?• 69% Toilet paper• 42% zipper• 38% frozen food

If stranded on a deserted island with only one “necessity”, what would you choose?• 49% toilet paper (ahead of food!)

How many people does it take to use an entire roll of toilet paper? For an average public restroom it takes approximately 70 visits

•How many days does it take a standard roll of toilet paper

last in a typical household bathroom? On average household occupants use 56 sheets per day That is an annual total of 21,000 sheets.(100 rolls)

What we hate most about toilet paper in public restrooms?33% empty dispenser.23% Breaking off before you get the needed length12% Roll of paper sitting on top of toilet tank11% Paper hanging on the roll and touching the floor

About 4 billion people in this world (from a total of 7 billion), don’t use toilet paper. There are large portions of the world with no trees. Since trees are the main source for fabrication of toilet paper, they can’t afford to import trees.

Some of the reasons people don’t use toilet paper are: toilet paper is too expensive, or not available, religious customs, etc. Water is the universal solvent, not paper.

A standard roll of toilet paper has an average of 300 sheets of 4.5”x4.5” per sheet.

Consumers use approximately 8-9 sheets of paper per toilet use.

It takes about 380 trees to make toilet paper, for one man during his lifetime.

USA production of toilet paper is about 83 million rolls per day.

Various toilet paper manufacturers, offer toilet paper in many different shapes, forms and flagrances. For instance: basic, essential soft, essential strong, one ply, two ply, printed or plain, scented or not scented, etc. Therefore when you order toilet paper you should know what is available and what you want. Toilet paper has secondary uses such as: nose care, cleaning mirrors, cleaning glasses, removing make-up, covering toilet seat, packaging material, etc.

Welcome to the exciting and provocative short story of toilet paper!

I would like to thank our LA Chapter WOA (Women of ASPE) Chairperson, Ms. Linda Deunay, and the two winners from our chapter, Ms. Laura Biggwe and Ms. Sarah Deunay, for donating their price money to our chapter WOA future scholarship. There will be more events to come. Please contact Linda if you have a good idea. She is organizing the WOA Blanket Drive and donating to the LA Mission for the homeless. Great job Linda! If you and your family want to participate, please contact Linda or any board member. At our January meeting, our chapter will have a blanket drive. Bring us a clean blanket from home or donate money to our WOA group. Check our advertisement in this newsletter.

Again, ladies from our chapter, you are not automatically enrolled in WOA. In order to enroll in this program, please contact us, or, Stacey Kidd, at [email protected].

If you are planning to become a new CPD, the exam will be held on April 5 and 6. Registration is now open. Please prepare for this exam. Also, if you need help, there is a class at the OC chapter, before every monthly meeting which coaches on how to study and prepare for the CPD exam. Registration will close on March 22, 2018.

By the way, do you know that ASPE has mentoring Program? This program, which is available to all members, has been designed to connect member mentors who have certain skill
