1A s you will note in the “Year in Review” section, it has been another exciting year at MSU, full of
achievements by our students, faculty, and staff. Please review these accomplishments and note
the range of possibilities at MSU from the arts to athletics to business to the sciences to service
and volunteerism to international connections to community partnering, and on and on. It is a
terrific litany of activities demonstrating the breadth of teaching, learning, service, and research
underway at MSU.
You will also see highlights from the recently concluded multi-year capital campaign: a 7-year,
$31.2 million campaign, the largest and most successful of its kind in MSU’s history. Through this
campaign, 100 new endowments were created, upgrades were made to academic and athletic facilities,
scholarship opportunities were boosted, and academic programs were enhanced. This campaign
has significantly elevated MSU’s trajectory, and none of this is possible without the support of the
5,104 donors who participated. THANK YOU!
Additionally, you will see how the 2017 fiscal year set an all-time record for private giving,
breaking the previous record set just last year. Your support is helping ensure MSU remains an
attractive destination for students seeking their post-secondary educational dreams. Endowed
scholarship programs are now at a record high, thereby assisting to lessen the financial burden of
our current and future students. THANK YOU for supporting MSU and creating these remarkable
milestones.
Please read the stories profiling four terrific friends of MSU: Al & Shirley Dietz and Bob
and Jo Ann Skabo. These two couples are wonderful individuals who value the power of
a high-quality education and firmly believe in the importance of giving back. They are
North Dakota natives who represent the very best of their home state, and the very
best of Minot State University!
I would be remiss not to comment on recent budget challenges. MSU is beginning
the 2017-19 biennium with approximately $8.6 million less in state funding when
compared to the appropriation from the start of the 2015-17 biennium. This decrease
has resulted in campus-wide reductions, including the elimination of 51 positions at
MSU. Campus operations will undoubtedly be tight during the next couple years.
We will have a “new normal” going forward as classes will be larger, class sections
might be offered less frequently, and certain offices/departments will not be as fully
staffed. It is worth noting that MSU has not eliminated a single academic program,
athletic program, or student-service opportunity. Important student opportunities
abound at MSU, and I am confident our campus remains a destination for students
throughout North Dakota and beyond. In addressing these budgetary challenges the
past months, I felt strongly that we not eliminate any major student opportunity
thereby ensuring every option remains available for current and future students
alike. I am proud of how our outstanding team of faculty and staff have responded
to these challenges.
Your support is as important now as it has ever been given these challenging
fiscal realities. THANK YOU for being part of the MSU family, for supporting our
students, and for taking time to peruse this 2016-17 President’s Report. It is indeed
an exciting time at Minot State University.
THANK YOU, AND AS ALWAYS, GO BEAVERS!
THANK YOU for your support of MSU! — President Steven Shirley

Al and Shirley Dietz
“I couldn’t
afford to
go to college
when I was a
young kid.
We wanted to give
somebody a chance
that I never had.”
— Al Dietz
l and Shirley Dietz were older-than- average students at Minot State long before the phrase gained currency.
Al Dietz graduated with a degree in business administra-tion in 1961. Shirley (Johnson) Dietz earned a degree through the Minot State-Trinity Hospital nursing program.
Al grew up in the town of Cathay, while Shirley was raised in Heimdal. For this couple, college wasn’t the carefree romp depicted in popular culture.
“I was married and had a family,” Al recalled.
“I worked nights and went to school during the day. I worked on the extra board on the Great Northern in Minot. Otherwise, I couldn’t have gone (to college).”
Club activities, frat parties and athletic events were enjoyed by other students, but not for this hard-working pair.
“I had time for studying and taking care of two small girls and my wife. It was tough,” he said.
The frenzied pace paid off for the young couple.
“I finished in three years because I overloaded and went summers. I was 30 years old when I graduated,” Al said.
A fond memory for the couple was the steel barracks that provided cheap campus housing. They lived in the makeshift housing during their last two years at Minot State.
“There was a lot of compe-tition for those barracks,” Al said. “They were comfortable.”
The only downside was the extra monthly charge for hot water. But, generally, the good features outweighed the bad.
“There were a lot of other young families there. We’d get together in the evening and visit,” he said.
After graduation, Al em-ployed his keen accounting skills at the IRS, a CPA firm, American State Bank & Trust and Dean Witter. Shirley pursued a career in nursing.
Their two young daugh-ters later returned to the Minot State campus as students. Kimberly (Dietz) Foster followed her mother into the nursing program, while Karla (Dietz) Gabriel ’84 earned a degree in el-ementary education.
The Dietzes recently established a sizable scholarship fund through the MSU Foundation, by taking advantage of an IRA charitable rollover. This unique opportunity allows owners of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) to make direct transfers to
qualified charitable endow-ments, free of income tax liability. Their gift also qualified for a matching grant, pursuant to the ND Challenge Grant Fund for Higher Education. These benefits combine to provide a lasting educational legacy to help future students attend MSU.
“I couldn’t afford to go to college when I was a young kid. We wanted to give some-body a chance that we never had,” Al said.
“The scholarship endow-ment will be held in perpetu-ity, with only the earnings distributed. That’s what’s great about it.” n

Together, we are creating legacies …
“We feel education is
extremely important
and a number of people
can’t afford college.
Giving something back
will enable others to
have that option”
—Bob Skabo
he life of one Minot State alumnus has come full circle. Raised in a small town in western North Dakota, Bob Skabo went on to have a successful optometric career in Illinois and then returned to his home state after retirement.
Bob was born in Crosby, attended elementrary school in Stanley and finished high school in Grenora. He went to college by default.
“I was 17 years old when I graduated from high school,” he said. “My father was deceased. My mother would not sign for me to go into the service because I was an only child. My choice then was to go on to college.”
Bob chose to attend Minot State, where he double majored in business and math and graduated in 1960. One professor who impressed him was Bernard Busse.
“He was an excellent teacher and a taskmaster,” he said. “I came late to my first class, a class that was bigger than my high school. I was embarrassed. He made some comment. I never came late again.”
Other instructors who made lasting impressions were Agnes Ladendorf and Doris Slaaten.
While he studied at Minot State, his future wife, Jo Ann Garaas, earned a degree at North Dakota State University. After their marriage, the couple taught for three years in Mentor, Minn. He taught math and business and coached basketball and football. She taught home economics.
The pair next moved to Chi-cago, where Bob attended the Illinois College of Optometry.
“Not having had the experi-ence of a major metropolitan area before, it was quite a change,” he recalled.
The couple eventually settled in DeKalb, Ill., where he practiced optometry for 46 years before retiring in 2010.
Jo Ann retired from the University of Illinois, where she served as an extension educator in the field of nutrition.
“We didn’t intend to stay there that long, but we stayed for almost 50 years,” he said of their time in Illinois.
The couple moved to Fargo last fall.
Bob and Jo Ann have generously supported their respective alma maters, and over the past several years, have established a number of Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs) through Minot State (Bob’s alma mater). CGAs are a wonderful charitable gift vehicle which allow donors to provide for future gifts to a favorite charitable organiza-tion, while retaining tax ben-efits and receiving a lifetime
T income. Donors cannot outlive the payments, and no change in the econo-my can affect the payments. Plus, there are no probate fees or expenses when the annuity balance passes to the chari-table organization upon the death of the donor.
“We feel education is extremely important and a number of people can’t afford college. Giving something back will enable others to have that option,” he said.
He felt he made the right choice when he attended Minot State back in the late ’50s.
“I found a number of new friends back then,” he said. “I enjoyed the community. I received a good education, which provided me the background to pursue other opportunities.”
Bob recently joined the MSU Board of Regents. n

MSU Development Foundation
Together, we created a record setting year
The first step in establishing a scholarship is to determine whether you would like to
establish an “endowed” scholarship or an “annual” scholarship:
n Endowed Scholarships
Endowed scholarship funds are designed to be permanent and perpetual and can
be created with gifts totaling a minimum amount of $10,000 contributed in full at the
outset or with an initial commitment that is added to over time until the endowment
level of $10,000 is reached. The principal of the fund is invested to produce income, and an
annual award is made to a student(s). The principal remains untouched, so the endowment
can last into perpetuity.
n Annual Scholarships
Annual scholarships can be established with an outright gift of any amount. Unlike an endowed
scholarship described above, an annual scholarship is not a permanent fund and is awarded only
as long as you (or others) choose to contribute to the fund.
As a scholarship donor, you choose the name of the scholarship as well as the criteria. The Office
of Advancement staff is available to help you create the criteria for your scholarship. Endowed
and annual scholarships at Minot State are awarded to deserving students based upon area of
interest, geographical origin, leadership potential, merit, financial need, academic achievement
or other criteria.
Typically, a selection committee carefully reviews the scholarship applications submitted by
students and selects the most deserving recipient(s) based on the donor-established criteria.
Contributors of a scholarship fund are notified annually when the scholarship recipient(s) has been
selected and are informed of the name, as well as the amount of the award. Recipients often
write a thank you note to the donor, and in some cases, the recipient and donor are able to meet.
Creating a named scholarship through the Minot State University
Development Foundation assists students and leaves a legacy to Minot
State University. It is also a meaningful way to honor family and friends.
