Academic Learning

Required Leadership Core Courses

Members of the President’s Leadership Program

must take:

MAN 175 Foundations of Leadership - 3cr

MAN 224* Leadership - 3cr

*Prerequisite: MAN 175 with a “B”

or better

PLP Elective List Students must also take 2 of the following courses of

choice for a total of 6 credit hours:

MAN 128 Human Relations in Organizations

BUS 217 Business Communications &

Report Writing

POS 205 International Relations

COM 115 Public Speaking

PHI 112 Ethics

Experiential Learning PLP scholars will be given ample opportunities to learn

about leadership through numerous hands-on

experiences throughout their one or two years in the

program. Provided opportunities include annual

leadership workshops and conferences, lectures from

recognized leaders and leadership positions on campus

and in the community. Participation in Phi Theta

Kappa and other campus organizations is encouraged.

Criteria for Selection Selection is based on leadership potential, intellectual

curiosity, a desire to give of oneself, as evidenced by the

following:

A minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average

Completed written application, including a written

essay and examples of leadership and service

experiences

Two letters of recommendation

High School or college transcripts

Personal interview

Service Learning The program places an emphasis on community service

and civic engagement in order to help scholars develop

a social awareness, civic responsibility and

interconnectedness. Scholars will be required to do a

minimum of 30 hours of community service each

semester they are enrolled in the program. A total of

120 service learning hours will be required over the

course of the program.

An academic certificate in Leadership Studies at

Otero Junior College requires 12-credit hours of

study and is limited to scholars who are accepted into

the program. The program requires two core

leadership courses and additional elective courses

from a wide-variety of academic programs on

campus.

Students must complete the 6-credit hour leadership

core plus an additional 6-credits of electives with a

grade of “B” or higher to receive the certificate.
