This issue of President’s Desk is loaded with the achievements of our students as they wound up the academic year. I am sure when you see their accomplishments, you will be impressed with their academic caliber. Our Academic All-American students work tirelessly to not only achieve a 3.5 GPA, but they represent LCCC in the intercollegiate athletic program. Additionally, the academic award winners from our May Commencement are also listed in this issue. LCCC also had the privilege of being the host of the Beacon Conference for the second time. It has been a decade since the conference was held on our campus and we were excited to show off our new Community Services Center to the students and faculty mentors of other area community colleges. Kudos goes to the conference co-chairs, Ned

Schillow and Christine Bowditch for making the conference possible and a tremendous success! It is also my pleasure to congratulate those students who entered and won the annual Business Enterprise Center business plan competition. In this competitive market, it is refreshing to see our students take initiative and use the skills they learn at LCCC, to make their businesses successful. We wish them the best of luck in their future business endeavors.

elc receives naeyc accreditation LCCC’s Early Learning Center (ELC) has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) - the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. “We’re proud to have earned the mark of quality from NAEYC, and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards,” said Kathy Mosley, Director of LCCC’s Early Learning Center. “NAEYC Accreditation lets families in our community know that children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences possible.” To earn NAEYC Accreditation, the College’s Early Learning Center went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the ten NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related accreditation criteria. The program received NAEYC Accreditation after an on-site visit by NAEYC assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the ten program standards. lv ad club donation

On Wednesday June 8th, LCCC was awarded a check towards the scholarship fund from the Lehigh Valley Ad Club at their annual meeting held in the Community Room of the Baum School of Art. The $500 check was graciously received by Tim Herrlinger, Executive Director of the Foundation, and Ellen Millard-Kern, Chairperson of the LCCC Foundation Board. The Ad Club’s mission is “To inspire creativity and enhance the professional development of the advertising and marketing communities in the Greater Lehigh Valley Area. Our main focus is to educate, provide local philanthropic outreach and celebrate the excellence of advertising in our community.”

Every year, the Foundation provides thousands of dollars to worthy students to assist with paying for their academic journey at LCCC. One example is the William L.F. Schmehl Memorial Scholarship, which was established in 1981 by the Schmehl family. William Schmehl was the first faculty member hired for the college. He was recruited by Dr. Berrier to come to Allentown with him to work on setting up the college. He started in the spring of 1967 working with the inital team. Professor Schmehl served from 1967 until his death in 1981 as the Chairman of the Social Sciences Department and a dedicated instructor. He was the advisor to the Political Science Organization. The scholarship was set up to honor an outstanding student with an interest in political science. The student did not have to major in political science or a related area, but to have

a sincere interest in the field. An essay on their interest in the field and their future plans was to be part of the consideration for the award. A committee of faculty would pick the award winner. For many years this committee was headed by a colleague, Professor John Gauger. An award of $100 went to the winner. ...to the winners of items in the
