- _ * tAt the Ne Win Dinner tonight, dinner was served in the family dining room ontables seating 10--three tables. It was apparent that the President and ChairmanBgg^Ex Ne Win had good private conversations and understanding because theatmosphere was very warm. (Dinner was made informal for two reasons--Burmese national costume for the male appears to be a dress, hence the Chairmandid not want to wear the national garb to the White House: and he also did notwant to wear his military uniform- -hence his request for informal dinner)The room was elegant, candlelight- -chandelier turned low. An immediatespark of conviviality came from all three tables. The President gava a verywarm toast to the Chairman and Madame Ne Win underling the cause ofBurmese independence and freedom respecting their neutrality in position.

Page 20: President's Daily Diary, September 8, 1966

The Chairman gave a warm and understanding toast to the President and tothe free world. After dinner, the President showed his guests through the LincolnRoom and several of the rooms on the second floor. John D. Rockefeller, IIIsaid after the party, "This was one of the nicest occasions I can remember, and I'm honored to have been asked--I'm the only private citizen here."After dinner coffee was served in the West Hall, and then the President andMrs. Johnson escorted Mat Chairman and Madame Ne Win down the elevatorand to their cars. The Chairman told Amb Symington that he was very gratefuland very pleased with the visit. Symington:mf
