PCVMA NEWSLETTER July 1, 2020 Volume 31 # 7 NO JULY MEETING SCHEDULED PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The board and I hope everyone is staying safe following guidance from local officials and the CDC. This has been an incredibly difficult year for us all, but we admire everyone’s resilience and continued dedication to animal welfare. We will be starting monthly webinars to continue our CE, please be on the lookout for more info. I also wanted to share some important information from local members as well as the CDC about our current situation. Recently, we sent out two survey requests on 6/4 and 6/22. Thank you so much to the hospitals and members that participated: Dorinda Odell, CVT, at Tarpon Animal Hospital, Dr. Mark Brown at Central Animal Hospitals, Dr. Julie White at Animal Hospital of Seminole, Dr. Robin Moore at East Bay Animal Hospital, Dr. Chérie Buisson at Helping Hands Pet Hospice, Jennifer Ballinger , CVPM, CVT, at Pinellas Animal Hospital, Dr. Kim Donovan at Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital, Jen Parenti , CVT, at Westlake Animal Hospital, Dr. Cindy Culpepper at Paws and Claws Animal Medical Center, Dr. Michael Rumore at Lake Seminole Animal Hospital, Dr. William Slocumb at Skyway Animal Hospital, and Dr. Brooke Certa at Coastal Animal Clinic. The survey responses indicated that the majority of hospitals are operating at normal hours and offering full services using curbside. Those that are not, are practicing social distancing in the hospital or in client homes for mobile services. Also, nearly all respondents indicated that euthanasias were an exception and that limited clients could come into the hospital wearing full PPE. These results are in line with the updated CDC recommendations for veterinarians and veterinary hospitals. The main points include education that animals are not spreading the disease but they can rarely become infected from humans. It’s important to rule out all other causes of the clinical signs in an ill pet before contacting the state veterinarian and pursuing COVID testing. The CDC recommends using curbside and telemedicine whenever possible, conserving PPE and opting for reusable/washable items, and regular cleaning/disinfecting. It is also important to discuss signs of COVID with owners prior to appointments and have a protocol in place if you must see a sick/injured animal that has been exposed to a person with symptoms or a positive test result. Please visit the CDC website for more information as their guidelines may change or become updated. PCVMA NEWSLETTER July 1, 2020 Volume 31 # 7

NO JULY MEETING SCHEDULED

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The board and I hope everyone is staying safe following guidance from local officials and the CDC. This

has been an incredibly difficult year for us all, but we admire everyone’s resilience and continued

dedication to animal welfare. We will be starting monthly webinars to continue our CE, please be on the

lookout for more info. I also wanted to share some important information from local members as well as

the CDC about our current situation.

Recently, we sent out two survey requests on 6/4 and 6/22. Thank you so much to the hospitals and

members that participated: Dorinda Odell, CVT, at Tarpon Animal Hospital, Dr. Mark Brown at Central

Animal Hospitals, Dr. Julie White at Animal Hospital of Seminole, Dr. Robin Moore at East Bay Animal

Hospital, Dr. Chérie Buisson at Helping Hands Pet Hospice, Jennifer Ballinger, CVPM, CVT, at Pinellas

Animal Hospital, Dr. Kim Donovan at Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital, Jen Parenti , CVT, at Westlake

Animal Hospital, Dr. Cindy Culpepper at Paws and Claws Animal Medical Center, Dr. Michael Rumore

at Lake Seminole Animal Hospital, Dr. William Slocumb at Skyway Animal Hospital, and Dr.

Brooke Certa at Coastal Animal Clinic.

The survey responses indicated that the majority of hospitals are operating at normal hours and offering

full services using curbside. Those that are not, are practicing social distancing in the hospital or in client

homes for mobile services. Also, nearly all respondents indicated that euthanasias were an exception and

that limited clients could come into the hospital wearing full PPE.

These results are in line with the updated CDC recommendations for veterinarians and veterinary

hospitals. The main points include education that animals are not spreading the disease but they can

rarely become infected from humans. It’s important to rule out all other causes of the clinical signs in an

ill pet before contacting the state veterinarian and pursuing COVID testing. The CDC recommends using

curbside and telemedicine whenever possible, conserving PPE and opting for reusable/washable items,

and regular cleaning/disinfecting. It is also important to discuss signs of COVID with owners prior to

appointments and have a protocol in place if you must see a sick/injured animal that has been exposed to

a person with symptoms or a positive test result. Please visit the CDC website for more information as

their guidelines may change or become updated.

As always, please reach out to your board members at any time to discuss your concerns or let us know if

there’s any way we can help. Have a great July 4th!

Sincerely,

Hillary Maedel, DVM

Advise veterinary clinic staff who are sick to stay home Follow CDC’s guidance on what to do if you are sick. Ask staff to stay home if they are sick. Employees who appear to have

symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, or shortness of breath) upon arrival at work or who become sick during the day should

immediately be separated from other clinic employees, customers, and clients and sent home. Inform the staff’s team members

if they have been exposed to someone who might have COVID-19, while maintaining confidentiality as required by the

Americans with Disabilities Act. Notify the local health department of the potential exposure as well. Ill staff should not return

to work until their fever (defined as ≥100.4°F) is absent for at least 72 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication,

other symptoms have improved, and at least 10 days have passed since symptom onset.

Implement sick leave policies for veterinary clinic staff that are flexible, nonpunitive, and consistent with public health

guidance, allowing employees to stay home if they have symptoms of respiratory infection.

Follow CDC guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting areas the sick employee visited. If possible, staff should each have their

own workspace/equipment and avoid sharing desks/work tools. If these items must be shared, they should be frequently

disinfected.

Critical workers, like veterinarians and their staff, can be permitted to continue to work following a potential exposure to

COVID-19, provided they remain asymptomatic and additional precautions are implemented to protect them and the

workplace. Everyone who enters the clinic, including employees and visitors, should wear a cloth face covering over their

nose and mouth to contain respiratory secretions, unless engaged in an activity that requires a different form of PPE.

education, political/legislative issues, business/financial issues, Florida Pharmacy Dispensing and the

Beginning June 8th we will begin accepting all cat intakes through the lobby. Dog intake will continue as normal. Effective June 1st, 2020, cats and dogs may no longer be turned into Pinellas County Animal Services anonymously. SPC COLLEGE OF VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY

As with everyone, these last few months have been a challenge to our adaptability in dealing the effect COVID has made on every aspect of our lives. We successfully brought students back to campus to complete their Spring semester labs. A huge shout out to all the vet tech faculty and staff who made this happen. We were even able to incorporate our online students who were unable to complete some of their labs through their clinics. This summer, we have some major renovation taking place. We are appreciative that college leadership approved our request to refinish our dog kennels. The work began immediately after

the students completed their campus labs, with an expected completion date of July 31st, in time for us to prepare for our August 17th Fall semester. As we prepare for the Fall semester, our current campus schedule will be all labs on campus and lectures delivered online. SPCA TAMPA BAY COVID-19 Response

Largo Campus – We have remained open for intakes and adoptions by appointment throughout this

event. We are limiting the amount of visitors to the campus and have only recently welcomed volunteers

back. As always, we are recruiting/training for foster homes. And we have moved New Dawn, our dog

training program, onsite for the foreseeable future.

Vet Center – We had begun to welcome one pet parent into the building per visit, but with the recent

spike in infections, we’ve gone back to curbside service exclusively. We’re providing all services,

including spay/neuter, as needed.

Celebrations!

2020 marks our 80th anniversary and we’ll be celebrating that in July. And in August, we’ll be

participating in the national Clear The Shelters, sponsored by Hill’s and NBC. Keep an eye on our social

media for fun news and stories!
