2Last year, I reported on our plans for the installation of 2major solar energy systems at the HHF outpatient clinic andthe Center of Hope in Jérémie.  We also completed 2 smallersystems at 2 of our clinics in the villages of Castillon andMoron. We are thrilled that these important facilities arenow 100% solar-powered.  Our Haiti National Director,Nadesha, continues in her 2nd year of directing ourprograms.  Many positive changes have taken place since her arrival, with more to come.

With age comes reflection of the past.  It is rewarding towitness how our small outreach in 1982 has grown intotoday’s Haitian Health Foundation, a world class outreach.We never anticipated the growth and expansion, or thevariety of services now provided to nearly 250,000 people.

We look forward to a successful future in the knowledge thatour caring and generous benefactors will continue to supportthis outreach to the poorest.  Thank you for being the drivingforce behind our progress.

Mesi to one and all,Dr. Jeremiah J. Lowney, Jr.

"In health there is freedom. Health is the first of all liberties."Henri Frederic Amiel

In this newsletter, I am thrilled to report on how your donations helpedchange so many lives.  Here are just a few accomplishments from last year: In addition to the thousands of people coming to our clinics for care, HHFhealth workers made 26,227 home health visits for those unable to travel.95% of HHF’s children under 1 year of age have been fully vaccinated, and24,024 doses of Vitamin A were distributed to prevent childhood blindness.406,021 iron supplements were given to pregnant women and 217 pregnantwomen were evacuated from their villages by HHF’s ambulance – adecrease from last year, because risky pregnancies are now being identifiedand monitored earlier.  365 women with at-risk pregnancies were housedand cared for at HHF’s Center of Hope, with no deaths to the mothers orchildren.  And, as we all know, health is more than the absence of illness.Good health and well-being cannot be attained without proper housing andnutrition.  This past year, 202 Happy Houses were built and 650 femalebreeding goats were distributed, and we were able to purchase the goatsfrom the same women who once received this gift, encouraging micro-enterprise development.

The health of a country depends on the education of its citizens.  Education is not free and is expensive in Haiti and yourdonations facilitated access to formal education to over 3,000 students in 82 local schools.  Because of your donations,countless lives in rural Haiti have been positively changed ~ one person at a time.  Mesi Anpil!  Marilyn Lowney

A restavek (meaning "to stay with") is a child,often as young as 4, in Haiti who is sent by his orher parents to live in another household to work as a domestic servant because the parents lack theresources required to support the child.  Thesechildren are not allowed to go to school and do not receive proper care.

Due to the support of many generous people, HHFhas, in the past year alone, identified 432 childrenliving in restavek conditions who are now inschool and receiving free health and dental care. In addition, parents are provided with support inan effort to avoid (due to their desperate needs)sending their children away.  Please support ourSponsor a Student program, as these funds changethe lives of these children.

Childhood malnutrition is endemic in rural Haiti, and it causes many health problems, includingmental and physical stunting, which affects the child throughout adulthood.  This past year, we identified over 2,000 malnourished children in our coverage area, and are working to combat bothacute and chronic malnutrition through the distribution of nutritious milk and high protein foods.Supporting our Feed a Child program will help save the lives of these children.

Nutrition Program:

650650 female breeding goats were distributed this past year. Training wasprovided to needy families for nutritional purposes and helpingthem create commerce by selling the offspring in the market.  The

training provides instructions on how to care for the goats, breeding thegoats for a herd and microenterprise advice.

Food securityTrees are sources of food, especially fruits,which are often nutritionally essential to thediet of rural people. Trees also modify micro-climate, water and nutrient flows for cropsand livestock, and are a source of income. The medicinal and other properties of treeproducts also play an important role inkeeping people healthy.  During this pastyear, HHF distributed 438 fruit trees andmany vegetable plants to Happy Houserecipients.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, goat meat is reported to be the healthiest red meat available, low in fat and cholesterol and high in protein. Goat meat is the most widely consumed meat in the world.
