CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Dinner at Rockafeller’s was great!

Our second quarter 2002 Chapter Dinner was held on Saturday, April 20th atRockafeller’s Restaurant in Virginia Beach. We had a great turn out of 27 membersand guests. Rockafeller’s management kindly set aside part of the third floor ban-quet room for our use. We enjoyed the fresh fish and other great entrees offered byRockafeller’s and a lot of great conversation.

We have two more dinners planned for this year. One in September on thePeninsula and another in November in Virginia Beach. Come out to the next dinner if you have a chance!!

FREE FOR THE TAKING

Our favorite octengenarian Bill Caldwell has made a gen-erous offer for the taking. He has ALL the Roundel maga-zines since August of 1996 and would like to give themto someone that would appreciate them. The alternativeis the fireplace and that would be a shame since thoseyears were great grassroots issues for the club. Myadvice to the young and new members is to snap upthese issues and find out what the Roundel USED to be.

Just a short note on Bill. His history and love of automo-biles spans over the last 50 years. Over these manyyears he has participated in the Antique Automobile Club, the Classic Car Club, Past President of the Lincoln Con-tinental Owners Club, the Ferrari Club, Porsche Club,Mercedes Benz Club, Miata Owners Club, the SportsCar Club of America (SCCA) and lastly the BMW CCA.This list is a distinguished testimony to a man that knowshow to enjoy his cars.

Bill’s personal odometer is just over 80 years but itsounds like it was a fun drive for him. He lives in HartfieldVirginia and can be reached at (804) 776-9688.

POETRY & ART IN MOTIONBy Buffy Heslin (chapter member and poet)

This came to me one beautiful day last week and I wantedto share it with all my fellow enthusiasts and wannabes;it helps to sum up my feelings about this fabulous pieceof machinery.

ODE TO MY BMWArt in motionPoetry in formSymmetry and balanceBeautifully adorned

Spirit liftingSoul well fedEmbracing every corner, as down the road I sped

Fulfilling every moment with bliss so divineThe wind, air caressing every graceful line

A BMW OF A DIFFERENT BREEDBy Mike Sackett

It doesn’t actually wear a Roundel but appears that some-one took the formula for the, now classic, 2002 and pairedit with the famed Mini Cooper of days gone past. Somethirty years later, the fun has returned! And if fun has acolor, this is it! Some of the new arrivals were blue, a fewin yellow, and an absolutely stunning silver pair also gracedthe “Mini” lot.

I had the distinguished privilege of attending the grand open-ing and formal announcement of the sale and long awaitedreturn of the Mini. Please don’t think, for one second, thatI am abandoning the ranks of my fellow E30 brethren, but Ihave to say this is one fun little car!

Thanks to Rob Lafferty, I was afforded the chance to driveboth the standard and “hot rod” versions of the Mini. Foreveryday driving the Cooper is more than ample. It’s artdeco styling definitely appealed to the left half of my brain. However, the right side was soon quieted once I put thecar through it’s paces in-town and on the highway. Ulti-mately, my yearning for torque could be held back no more!It was soon satisfied with a spirited drive in the Cooper S.In my opinion, the Mini isn’t just another “Retro Throw-Back”.This car is already a classic.

A WORD FROM THE STUDENTSHere are a few notes and comments from the studentsabout our chapter driving schools:

“One week after I completed the performance driversschool, the words of my instructors Kevin, Bob and Curtcame back to my mind as I instinctively guided my 528ito avoid a major accident. My car went exactly where Iwanted it to as my foot moved from the gas pedal to thebrakes and the steering wheel shuffled through myhands. That is why both my wife and son will attend thedrivers school in May.”

Submitted by Victor Holman

“Attending my second driving school was a lot more funthan the first and the first was a whole lot of fun. I learneda lot from the instructors and driving and about myselfduring the first school. What I learned about myself wasto curb my enthusiastic aggression on the track and itproduced a smoother driving experience and in somesituations a faster course ‘time’. The school is a greatopportunity for everyone to get to know their cars betterand find the limits of The Ultimate Driving Machine.”

TIDEWATER MEMBERS MAKE THETREK TO 12 HOURS OF SEBRINGby Curt Kiser

One of the oldest and historic races held in the UnitedStates is the 12 Hours of Sebring. On 16 April of thisyear they celebrated the 50th running of that race. Tosay that it was special would be an understatement.

I got caught up in going along with some friends of minebut then found out that Bob and Cheshire Eveleigh areveterans of the Sebring race. It didn’t take much of anudge to get Bob and Cheshire to jump into the mix.

My favorites were the historic races with all of the rareand exotic cars that run. It’s most likely that I’ll neversee some of those fine examples of history race again.

One major problem was before us. NO BMW’s in the 12hour race. NO LMP class cars, NO GT class cars. NOBMW’s....period. That was a large let down but we didget to cheer on some Bimmers during the Speed Chan-nel Challenge. Will Turner and other independents wereright in there giving it a good go.

If you are a race fan you will very much like watching arace that is loud, fast, and the cars light-up their brakerotors cherry red at night. The cars are so fast that theirtail lights looked like jet fighters streaking away into thedark. It’s the model of ultimate driving, very impressive.

One of the teams that I watched closely was the brandnew Cadillac cars (pictured above). I needed an under-dog and they seemed to fit the bill. They did very well fora new from the ground up car.

I’d like to thank Carlos Diaz-Estrada, the FloridaSuncoast and Sunshine Bimmers chapters for hostingthe BMW corral. It was the only shade anywhere pluswe had our own stadium seating for turn 17!

SMITHFIELD RALLY JUDGED AGREAT SUCCESS — [By Most]By Joe Bivins and Jim Waldeck

The weather was beautiful, the convertible tops weredown, attendance was up, and most all had a great day!We had almost 50 people gather for our Spring Rallynear Smithfield on Sunday, 7 April. The cars ranged from2002s all the way up to 7 series and new M3’s. The peopleranged from age 10 to, well…, well above 60.

Everyone enjoyed the back roads around Smithfield –the scenery was pretty, and the roads were VERY curvy!– There were a few unsettling moments for the 5-6 peoplewho saw flashing police lights in their rear view mirrors—but no one got any tickets! Most finished on time for anice late lunch at the Smithfield Inn in their garden area. There were several people who had to open their “BailOut” instructions to find their way back to the Inn—wewill not mention names, but one is a club officer, andanother is a “retired” club officer!

We had lots of nice prizes, thanks to Checkered FlagBMW Part Dept., who donated $75, $50, and $25 GiftCertificates—their support is outstanding! First placewent to David and Diana Knight, who managed to an-swer ALL questions, and drive the route in fewer milesthan the Rally Master! [Maybe their convertible helped].John Roberts captured 2nd place, with help from hisson, and son’s girlfriend. [Young men must pay attentionto more than girls]. 3rd place went to Lisa Gray, who waspar ticipating in her first BMW CCAevent...congratulations, Lisa! In all, prizes were awardedto eight different cars.

The day ended with some people still discussing the dif-ference between a fire hydrant and a red barn ??

[Note from Editor: I have a feeling that you will have toask Pete about the barn reference.]

A LETTER OF THANKS.....

“Many thanks to Jim and Joe for the fine time Caroleand I had on Sunday. It was our first rally and for all thefun we had certainly not our last. A big turn out and theweather cooperated and a good time was had by all.”

Thanks again,Bob and Carole Parsons

02-02-02 at BMW SpartanburgBy: Chess Harris

It doesn’t take much to get the Tidewater 2002 and Classics owners excited than news about another get-together. Whilemany folks joke about our keeping a trunk of spare parts near by, truthfully, we’re a pretty tight group. And among us, the 02ersare a distinctive clan unto themselves — with both past and current 02 owners. Many old BMW traditions still thrive among us,from “winking headlights” at each other to emergency gatherings of the “little cars” at someone’s house to help solve an 02’smechanical or electrical problem. With this as a backdrop, the how and the why for the story that follows is set.The call for a massive 2002 series rally at BMW Spartanburg to commemorate the “Year of the 02” flew across the internetwaves in mid-December 01. Within days, the Tidewater 02s met to discuss travel plans. The Peachtree Chapter 02ers took thelead, with Chapter 02 reps and 02 owners looking to be a part of the action. With Steve and Laurel at the helm here, and Bob helping with many of the travel details, the US-wide ’02 rally officially called“02-02-02” launched in Tidewater. The weatherman smiled on the 02 celebrations, with promises of sunshine and warmth: well,he made good on 1 out of 2!Now, back to the spare parts concern. Yes, I had the extra alternator and voltage regulator and Steve had a few otherelectrical items, and sorted out who was bringing which parts and tools across the fleet of 02s making the sojourn from theTidewater area. Most of the gang launched early Friday (1 February) AM. Steve and Laurel in the 76 “Blue Rocket”, Bob and Curt in the 72“Try-and-catch-me” Inka orange screamer, and Evan and Rob in the 75 “Mean Green” machine — all started the cruisesouthward —with guarded speed as the 02s buzzed along 58 west ward. At South Hill and merger with I-85, the sprintstarted. Early check-in (preregistration was mandatory) meant they could get into the special factory tour that evening.Meanwhile Doug and his ’70 Dakar “hurt your eyes” Yellow 02 were in Georgia on business. He steamed northward, linking up with the Tidewater 02 convoy at the hotel in Spartanburg. We made our mark on factory tour. What a show! And ofcourse, then the guide says you cannot look over there, that’s were the new models are being finished — everyone sneaks overas if to be a Spy-photographer for the Roundel.Meanwhile, Karen and I launched with our 73 “Red pocket-rocket” late Friday PM, completing the 420 mile trek to BMW heavenaround midnight Friday. It was cold—around 30 degrees, and the cars were dirty. That meant an early morning freeze-your-fingers washing for sure. I say late Friday night but it was more like early morning. Bob called our room at 6AM with an update on activities andschedule; (Karen loved that one since we only had been asleepa few hours!) Steve arranged for a hot water hose and towels at the hotel to wash the cars before we left that AM. AsEvan and I lathered-up our 02s, several others pulled into theWaffle House across the way. The excitement about what“02-02-02” was becoming took hold. The Tidewater 02 clan filledthe hotel brunch room, chowed-down on the muffins and cereal, filled up on coffee, and launched for the BMW factory. It was like a Le Mans start. Underway, headed north, wesettled into convoy. There were 02s everywhere on I-85. Adozen other 02’s surrounded us as we headed toward BMWDrive and the entrance to the BMW plant. The manicured lawnin front of the plant would soon be graced with over 250 2002s,coming from all across the USA. Many 2002 owners’ flew-infrom as far away as Washington State, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. The panorama photo went at 10AM, followed by our wanderingthrough a parking lot full of vendors hocking 02 parts and accessories. The 02 autocross drew many to the side parking lot andothers paced the museum and wandered through the acres of 02s around the Zentrum. What a beautiful day! Our distinctive“Tidewater 02s” window stickers drew gawkers and photographers — great idea by Evan! Sat PM, we feasted on a superb bratwurst and kraut dinner followed by presentations and awards by BMW Spartanburg andthe Peachtree Chapter. 02-02-02 proved to be a fun-packed, exciting, and rewarding day for any BMW enthusiast. The ridehome only put icing on this white and blue BMW cake! We agreed to launch at 9 AM. Well, almost all were accounted for, less Curt. So, Karen seeking to return the wake-up callfavor for the day before, called Curt – who was already moving…somewhat [note from Curt...revenge was served to the wrongperson!]. The four BMW 2002 crews settled into a 80-85 m.p.h. groove, holding tight in the right lane. A couple 02s joined andthen left the group as we streamed rock-steady northward. And then, way in the distant rear Phil Marx’s 02 came in sight – andseconds later it screamed by as he gave a big thumbs up to the Tidewater crowd. As we neared the I-664 interchange with US-58, the tight group of 02s would split off into singles. What an incredible weekend, and to hear that from my wife meant that itmust be so! A special thanks to Steve and Laurel, as well as Bob and Curt. Great job!
