high-speed Internet, “smart home” and phone services.

Our X1 entertainment platform - with its innovative voice remote

and Netix integration - is changing the way our

    customers experience TV.

Comcast is a proud sponsor andcongratulates all of the 2017 nominees.

Welcome to the 46th Annual 2016-2017 Northern California Area Emmy® Awards Gala. This evening celebrates our chapter’s broadcast excellence and professional comradery. Congratulations go to the 501 individuals nominated. Many of these individuals received multiple nominations. Truly, work awarded an Emmy® statuette by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) attests an outstanding achievement.

Tonight, this room honors some of the most talented chapter journalists and media crafts people of the year. As chapter president, I am proud to represent such vibrant professionals locally in Northern California, Reno, and Hawaii, as well as, at the national NATAS meetings.

We are indebted to first time Emmy® Gala Chair Uilani Gray for her outstanding work organizing this event. Uilani brought her unique skill set to our celebration. Special thanks to Award Committee Chair Wayne Freedman. This is his first year as chair after serving many, many years on the committee (and receiving many, many Emmy® Statuettes). He has done a fine job guiding the long award process which culminates tonight. My special appreciation goes to Patty Zubov, Keith Sanders and Kevin Wing, who were instrumental in securing sponsors and marketing the Gala. And as always, a special salute to our longtime Executive Director Darryl Compton who manages the countless details that make this event possible. This dazzling night depends on the outstanding resources of the full Emmy® Gala Committee. Thank you for all your hours of phone calls, emails, meetings, site surveys and just plain hard work.

Have a great evening. Tonight is special because you have made it special. Your toil, labor, and dedication to excellence contribute to this great occasion. We come here, our most important event of the year, because of you. Have a great evening.

  • This is the event that we all look forward to throughout the year. On behalf of the Emmy® Award Committee, I would like to welcome you to the 46th Annual Emmy® Awards Gala. Where the cream of the crop come out and are acknowledged for their hard work.

We are excited to have Comcast sponsor the Comcast Xfinity1 Lounge, which is located upstairs on the second floor. This will be a great place to relax, enjoy your food, drinks and try out the Xfinity1 Experience.

We will be serenaded throughout the evening by the Marcus Shelby Trio, what better than to have a jazz band in the magnificent SFJAZZ Center. Our goal is to get you your awards and start the celebrations as quickly as possible. This year we are using two podiums to achieve this goal with four honorary hosts to move the program along. So what we need from you is your cooperation in being ready when your category is called and keeping your speeches brief. The Emmy® Etiquette is on page 16. Please take a moment to read it.

This is your night so tell the world about it. The event will be live http://www.emmysf.tv. We are requesting that you use #EmmySF to all your Emmy night tweets.

Special thanks to everyone who put so much work into making this event a success: The NATAS Emmy® Gala Committee, The Board of Governors, and our Emmy® Gala volunteers and staff. The technical magic that you see tonight is thanks to SFJAZZ Technical team, Beyond Pix Studios, Robert Erdiakoff, Wayne Philippo and the mastermind behind it all Darryl Compton.

Congratulation to all the Emmy® Nominees and good luck!

    Sincerely,

    Uilani A. Gray

  • 2016-2017 Awards Judging ProceduresThe San Francisco/Northern California Chapter annually honors outstanding individual, news and program achievements in Northern California, Hawaii and Reno. The purpose of conferring the coveted Emmy ® statuette is to provide incentive for continuing outstanding individual and production achievements within the television industry. The Emmy® Awards program is also a means of focusing public attention upon the multi-talented individuals who comprise this business and to honor them.

There can be one award, more than one award or no award presented in each category. This was another record year with 947 entries (735 English and 212 Spanish) were submitted in 67 categories from the calendar year 2016, for Emmy® award consideration. All entries were submitted and uploaded through Emmy® Express and then judged online by the following NATAS chapters: Boston/New England; Chicago/Midwest; Heartland (Denver); Lone Star (Texas) and Sun Coast (Miami). At least seven peers viewed and scored each entry. English and Spanish entries are judged separately. The online programs were scored for content, creativity, and execution (1 to 10 points), for a possible total of 30 points. Craft categories are judged on creativity and execution only, for a possible 20 points. After scoring all the entries in the category, the judge certified his or her scores and the ballot is sent directly to Spalding and Company, our accounting firm for processing.

A tabulated sheet representing each category, with separate entries for English and Spanish-but not identified - was presented to the Awards Committee. The committee determined a cut-off score in each category and entries above that score were considered nominees. The committee then selected the Emmy® recipients by highest scores. The Awards Committee members made these selections without knowing which entries or categories were being considered. The nominations were announced May 3, 2017 on the chapter’s website. 213 English and 95 Spanish entries were nominated with 928 certificates being handed out to 501 individuals. Tonight, we will see the top scores of Emmy® award excellence.

  • Emmy® Etiquette Presentation of Emmy® AwardsCongratulations, 2017 Emmy® nominees from your gala committee. This is a reminder of the changes we made several years ago that have helped to streamline the show and some new additions.

    1. We will be announcing the recipients of a category at the same time this year. All recipients will come to the house left steps to the stage and will be told which podium to use. You will be given your statuettes and the lights will be on one of the two podiums for your 30 second speech. Then you will exit and the lights will come up on the second podium for the other speech.

    2. Each nominee has submitted a spokesperson that is designated to give a speech, should that nominee receive an award.

    3. When the Host reads the award recipient, they will also read the name of that spokesperson. But if that spokesperson is not available to come onto the stage, other parties may come onto the stage to receive the statuette in their place.

    4. In the event that no spokesperson was submitted with the nomination, then the host will simply announce the Award Recipient and NO ONE will be permitted on the stage for that category.

    5. The spokesperson should come up onto the stage using the stairs on the left.

    6. Once on the stage, the spokesperson will receive a temporary statuette.7. The spokesperson is then welcome to approach the microphone and give

their speech.8. Other parties are welcome to join the spokesperson on the stage...but they

will not be permitted to give a speech.9. All speeches are limited to 30 seconds.10. If you are not the designated spokesperson, or you have already

given a speech, you will not be permitted to give a speech and will be disappointed to find, that the microphone will not be active.

    11. After receiving the award statuette, parties will be escorted backstage to deposit the temporary statuette and be escorted to the Red Carpet area.

    12. When you get to the Red Carpet area you will sign and receive your engraved Emmy® statuette, be interviewed on the Red Carpet webcast and have your formal photo taken.

  • The Governors’ Award:Joyce Mitchell

Presented by: Ted Ross President, Ross-Campbell, Inc.

Passion is what drives Joyce Mitchell. Couple that with 40-years of experience in TV as a journalist and Joyce strives to produce memorable programs that make a difference in this community, nation, and world. She has four regional Emmy® Awards for her documentary work and 20 nominations. In 2010, Joyce was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) San Francisco/Northern California Chapter’s Silver Circle. She’s also won an Associated Press California-Nevada Best Documentary award for a program on teens and violence. Joyce now serves as a Governor on the Board of NATAS.

In 1972, after graduating editor-in-chief of her college newspaper, the second woman to hold the job, Joyce infiltrated the then male-dominated newspaper business, becoming one of two women and the youngest member of the Capitol Press Corp in Sacramento. She helped pioneer political reporting for women in the early and mid 70s.

Joyce left the political arena to pursue a Master’s Degree and accepted an internship at Sacramento NBC Affiliate KCRA. She was hired to produce newscasts and worked 13 years at Channel 3, eight years producing the 11 O’Clock News. She then moved over to CBS13 where she stayed 10 years, producing election coverage and other special projects. From there, she was hired as Senior Producer at KVIE Public Television and honed her skills in long-format TV. Joyce also taught Broadcast Journalism at Sacramento State University for 16 years. She has a BA in Government-Journalism and an MA in Communication Studies.

Now an independent television producer, In 2014, Joyce produced the live, statewide, one-hour Gubernatorial Debate between Gov. Jerry Brown and Neel Kashkari. She specializes in television that makes a difference. Documentary projects include: • Collision Course/Teen Addiction Epidemic (2012 Emmy® Award) • A Choice to Heal/Mental Health in California - with Mariel Hemingway • Stand and Salute/Our Veterans • College: Making It Happen - with Edward James Olmos (English & Spanish) • Dave Brubeck: A Castle’s Song • AIDS in the 21st Century • The Journey Ahead/End-of-lifeJoyce has traveled to Romania, producing a documentary updating the American people on the plight of abandoned and orphaned children in Eastern Europe. Though she sometimes tackles difficult topics, she is committed to using TV to raise awareness about important topics.

An HIV/AIDS activist since 1986, Joyce co-founded and chairs the Sacramento non-profit Capital City AIDS Fund. She’s helped bring-in $3-million for the Sacramento HIV/AIDS community and is committed to using television to improve and save lives.
