PRESIDENT’S LETTER In most years, the coming of Spring means the April Sectional is nearly upon us. However, as pre- viously advised, we have had to cancel this year’s due to renovations at the Guardian Angel Church. The work is apparently on schedule, and we look forward to resuming the balance of this year’s sec- tionals. If looking for an excellent tournament in the near future, we recommend getting a Swiss team to- gether for the Bob Johnke Team Event to be held on Saturday, April 5 at Christ Church in Ridge- wood. All of the activities of the North Jersey Bridge Association (Unit 106) are the result of the efforts of many bridge loving volunteers. Labor is divided into approximately 20 different committees, com- posed of many Board members and non-Board members. We could always use more help. The Tournament and Hospitality Committees work together to bring us the popular Allendale Sec- tionals. While we have a number of loyal volunteers working on these committees, we specifically could use more help there. If interested, please contact Marlene Case at 845-942-1182 or give your name to any Board member. PRESIDENT’S LETTER

In most years, the coming of Spring means the April Sectional is nearly upon us. However, as pre-viously advised, we have had to cancel this year’s due to renovations at the Guardian Angel Church. The work is apparently on schedule, and we look forward to resuming the balance of this year’s sec-tionals. If looking for an excellent tournament in the near future, we recommend getting a Swiss team to-gether for the Bob Johnke Team Event to be held on Saturday, April 5 at Christ Church in Ridge-wood. All of the activities of the North Jersey Bridge Association (Unit 106) are the result of the efforts of many bridge loving volunteers. Labor is divided into approximately 20 different committees, com-posed of many Board members and non-Board members. We could always use more help. The Tournament and Hospitality Committees work together to bring us the popular Allendale Sec-tionals. While we have a number of loyal volunteers working on these committees, we specifically could use more help there. If interested, please contact Marlene Case at 845-942-1182 or give your name to any Board member.

This ‘n That From Your District Director

There is a matter that I hate to mention, and yet feel I

must. At the nationals in Phoenix last November, an

article in the daily bulletin included a plea for players

to behave in an appropriate and adult manner. Serious

problems had been reported of players stealing from

the concession stands, abusing hotel staff, and behav-

ing in other ways too appalling to mention. I would

like to think that none of the abusers were from District

3, but it seems essential to appeal to everyone to recog-

nize that we are all ambassadors for the game we love.

I sincerely hope that there will be no further problems

of this kind in Dallas or in any of our future venues.

Please, if you see players misbehaving, find an official

of ACBL and report the incident. Bad behavior by a

few reflects poorly on all of us.

The next special event in District 3 will be the GNT

finals which will be held in White Plains, NY, on Sat-

urday April 12, at St. Gregory’s Armenian Church.

Brunch will be served at 11:30 am with the game start-

ing at 12:30 pm. This will be our first tournament us-

ing the following new ACBL stratifications.

NEW GNT STRATIFICATIONS

Championship Flight - No masterpoints restrictions

Flight A - 0-6000 masterpoints

Flight B - 0-2500 Masterpoints

Flight C - 0-500 Non Life Master

In the March ACBL Bulletin the ad for this event mis-

takenly showed the old strats, so please help us spread

the word regarding this change.

As always I look forward to attending the Regional

in Saratoga Spring s, which is earlier this year – the

first week in June – so that we will not be finishing the

tournament on Father’s Day. We hope with this new

schedule, we will increase weekend participation and

surpass last year’s attendance, which was a record

breaker.

The Bob Johnke will be April 5th. The pre-

registration form is now available on the District 3

website. Barkley and I look forward to seeing many of

you there.

Glenda Calkins, District Director

Over my 1NT opener in the hand above, my partner Joanne Salomon transferred and then bid 3D. I

liked my fit for her second suit plus two outside aces, so I bid 4S. After an RKC asking bid, she put me in 6

Spades. A heart was led and won with the King. I led a spade to the Jack as LHO dropped the 8. I returned a

club to the King in dummy and led the Queen of spades trying to pin the ten, and although the Queen won, I

only lost to the King later, making 6 Spades.

This array of trump cards reminded me of an article I had read many years ago about a hand defended by

Norman Kay in a similar situation. Kay held KT8x in spades behind the AJx in dummy. When declarer

played to dummy and finessed with the Jack, it was obvious to Kay that the suit could be picked up if he won

with the King and declarer next played the Ace and finessed to the Queen and nine against the ten. So instead

of taking the king then, Kay played the 8. Sure enough, declarer then did what I did and got to his hand and

led the spade Queen. Imagine declarer’s surprise when the next hand showed out and he wound up losing two

spade tricks to Norman Kay instead of only one. Fortunately for me, the defender’s spades were reversed

from the article’s layout, so even if Norman Kay had been defending I would have been able to bring home

the slam.
