President’s Message September 2019
Yvette Ngann, BSN, RN, CWON, CRRN
Hello Fellow ARN Members,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 ARN Los
Angeles/Orange Chapter year. It is with great honor
that I serve you this year as your incoming Chapter
President.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful incoming
Board of Directors and Members: Marianna Ward, Vice
President; Crystal Barker, Treasurer/Awards Chair;
Stephanie Lim, Secretary; Deepa Kannampuzha,
Immediate Past President. The Board Members at Large
are: Victoria Alvarenga, Leslie Bainbridge, Laura Ferber,
and Vance Shaw. Finally, Elaine Morris — Newsletter
Editor— Marilyn Pires- Ex Officio member, Lynn
Weatherwax— Educational Program Liaison, Vance
Shaw—Historian, and Paddy Garvin-Higgins—
Communications. The new Board was officially installed
in our transition board meeting on June 13th, 2019. The
incoming Board Members and I want to thank Deepa
Kannampuzha for all the contributions she has made to
our local chapter, including her exceptional leadership
throughout the 2018 – 2019 term. We have had a great
year under her leadership, supporting the profession of
rehabilitation through professional growth, community
contributions, innovation, education and as always, fun
memories along the way.
It is not long ago that I can recall my mentor
inviting me to attend as her “non-member” guest to my
first LA-OC ARN educational event back in 2009 at the
Casa Colina Rehabilitation Hospital. It was very
educational and enlightening to see members who work
at various facilities, forming friendships and
encouraging each other along their professional
journey. I met many ARN members whom I still
network with today and I am so thankful for leaving my
comfort zone that day to attend an LA-OC ARN event.
Having a mentor to accompany me was encouraging
and helped me learn over the years how to improve
myself, as well as my patient’s outcomes and goals. I
am forever grateful for having a mentor.
We acknowledge that mentors play a large role
in helping us grow professionally and this past year our
Chapter developed and implemented an “Internship
Program” that paired Chapter members who expressed
an interest in board positions, to pair up with a Board
mentor, as Board Interns. Board mentors included
Paddy Garvin-Higgins, Crystal Barker, Lynn Wetherwax,
and Deepa Kannampuzha. Many thanks go to Crystal

Barker who created the idea of this program and
coordinated it to come to fruition. Our first cohort of 4
interns was a success and 3 of those interns were
installed into the Board for the 2019-2020 term
(Stephanie Lim, Leslie Bainbridge, and Marianna Ward).
Congratulations! Our interns will be presenting a poster
highlighting their experience in this innovative program
at the ARN 2019 REACH Conference so please swing by
their poster if you will be attending. This year we
welcome Izzah Panganiban as she joins us as our newest
Intern Board Member for the 2019-2020 year,
“Welcome Izzah”! Do you have an interest in being a
Board Intern? We encourage you to apply! Please look
in your emails starting next year for upcoming
applications and deadlines.
This year we will continue to focus on giving
back to our over 140 members by providing multiple
opportunities to grow professionally, network, and have
fun. One way we are giving back to members was with
the development of a LA-OC ARN member scholarship,
“Giving Back to Members Campaign”, to pay for one
member’s registration to attend the ARN 2019 REACH
Conference this November 6th-9th in Columbus, Ohio.
Thank you to those who entered. Essays were recently
received and are being reviewed. The winner will be
announced soon. If you are a member and are
attending this year’s ARN 2019 REACH conference,
please feel free to reach out to us to network as several
Board members will also be attending. We want to
congratulate our Board members, Elaine Morris, who
will be recognized at the conference as ‘Staff Nurse of
the Year’ and Crystal Barker who will be inducted as a
‘Fellow’ for national ARN. We are very proud of you
both. Keep shining!
Our annual summer and winter socials provide
members with networking, fun activities, and
opportunities to bring non-members as guest to learn
more about our organization. We would love to meet
you all and encourage you to attend. Prices are always
reduced to allow the most bang for your buck. This past
summer social event was held at The Artroom at the
Atwater Village in Burbank. We had a great turn out
and enjoyed painting & sipping as we enjoyed lunch,
wine and refreshments in a hipster environment (Please
see ‘Summer Social’ article written below by Victoria
Alvarenga). Please be on the lookout for more news to
register for our upcoming Winter Social taking place this
December.
This year we are pleased to announce our 2nd
Annual LA-OC ARN Educational Conference, “A Sea of
Innovation” taking place at the Hyatt Regency in Long
Beach on Friday October 11th, 2019 from 8am to 4pm.
Adjacent to The Pike Outlets and Shoreline Village,
there is so much to do. Up to 7.6 CEUs will be provided
with innovative topics ranging from technology,
defensive documentation, stroke, pain management,
hands-on with dressings, quality reporting, and our
keynote speakers Dr. Michael Su and Dr. Ellen Chang
will be discussing movement disorder and dementia in
the rehab setting. For the first time, our Annual
Business Meeting will take place immediately following
the conference to maximize members and prospective
members’ participation. At the conclusion of the
Annual Business meeting, conference participants will
be given the opportunity to ‘Meet and Greet’ with their
Board Members in a social networking opportunity;
refreshments provided. All this can be enjoyed by LA-OC
ARN members for only $60. Members can bring non-
members if they register together, to allow non-
members to attend for the member price. Non-
members registering separately is $80. Late
Registration is $100. As always, without the generous
support of our vendors this conference cannot be
possible so please visit them during the event. Please
see the website www.laocarn.org for details and
registration. Deadline to register is 9/27/19.
Finally, coming in spring 2020, we are offering
our members an online blended certification review
course for the CRRN. Based on feedback from many of
our members and previous participants, this will
provide the opportunity to review content and
questions online at your pace. To supplement the
course we will include a one-day review held in-person
at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.
We hope to accommodate our participant’s schedules
while also allowing for the connection with other rehab
nurses, and providing strategies for success. Please be

on the lookout for more details coming up soon on our
website.
We are always looking for ways to give back to
our community. With members representing over 20
facilities within the Los Angeles and Orange County
areas, there are always opportunities to give back so
please do not hesitate to contact us on our website or
personally to Board Members about events or ideas you
may have. We will be visiting the Emanate Health
Queen of the Valley in West Covina on September 17th,
so please feel free to drop by if you are in the area. I
look forward to this year bringing opportunities for
innovation within our professional careers as well as
participation to many of our upcoming activities. Giving
back to the community and to our members continues
to be one of our organizations goals and with your
involvement, it is sure to be robust. I hope that if you
are on the fence about attending an event, like I was
many years ago, that you would be encouraged to
attend in-person with many of the opportunities we
have to buddy up with a Board mentor, bring a
colleague, or a non-member with you to many of our
upcoming events. I personally have not regretted in
doing so, and believe it has strengthened me in
providing the best care to my patients and has
enhanced what I give back professionally. In the
meanwhile, please feel free to follow us on Facebook

Along with a dedicated group of Board Officers & Members we welcome you to the 2019-2020 year and we look forward to hearing from you or meeting you in person.

Number of Years in Rehab Nursing: 4.5
Reason Interested in Internship:
As an intern of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses
Board, I can use my current experience as a base in
gaining a better understanding of the association. By
helping assist the board through its various innovative
activities in promoting advance rehab practices, rehab
nurses will be aware of the best care possible for their
patients - being committed to a holistic, collaborative,
and evidence-based approach in improving care and the
quality of life of people with disabilities and chronic
illnesses. I can also share with my colleagues its values
being a visionary leader committed to the interest of all
rehab nurses by supporting their needs through
different educational offerings that enhances their
professional skills. This opportunity is very important to
me because I can leverage the wealth of information
and skills gained through this internship to promote the
best practices at my workplace. Striving to be a
champion of the ARN’s goals and objectives that is to –
uphold a high ethical standard of care in transitioning
patients from the hospital to the community by
educating them well for them to make the best
decisions for their health and collaborating with the
health care team to ensure that they are aware of all
needed resources for them to succeed. If given the
opportunity, I will give my commitment to help with its
activities and be a team player.

Paint and Sip Studio in LA is a cozy little place,
where people have the opportunity to explore their
artistic painting talent. At the beginning, I think most
of us were a little nervous about painting, especially
if we had never done it before, but that was eased
soon by instructions giving at the very beginning of
our event. The studio was reserved for our group
for 2 hours for a reasonable price.
For our 2019 ARN Summer Special Event, we had
a new, unique experience (for some of us) at a
Paint and Sip Studio in LA. We were able to
explore our artistic talents by giving our best shot to
painting a replica of “Sunset in Venice”. Our
painting instructor was very patient and guided us
every step of the way. In addition to painting we
were able to have good conversations and net
working with each other, while we enjoyed a
yummy lunch, refreshments and a little bit of wine.
As we were creating our piece of art, it was
amazing to see how much we were able do by
mixing colors together and using different kind of
brushes.
As we completed our painting, we were able to see
and admire each other work. We ended the day by
taking a group picture with our paintings.

Making a Difference”
Meet the Interdisciplinary SSKIN Huddle
Team on the spinal cord injury (SCI) rehab unit at
Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation
Center. Every Monday this interdisciplinary team
consisting of the patients Primary RN, SWAT (skin,
wound, assessment, team) nurse, physical
therapist, occupational therapist, Primary Provider,
and Wound Nurse, meet with patients in a patient-
centered rounds to evaluate their skin, wounds,
and plan of care to prevent/treat pressure injuries.
The team acknowledged that 85% of spinal
cord injury patients develop a pressure injury (PI)
within their first year of injury. Often times, the SCI
patients were being admitted with these PI and
challenges arose with communication between the
disciplines about which patients had PI, as well as
the delicate balance of limiting sitting hours while attempting to reach rehab goals. Many times patients with nonadherence to plan of care for turning or sitting often developed hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPI). Within one year of the SSKIN Huddle implementation, HAPI rates on the unit were reduced by 71%. Success for this Huddle really begins with the
frontline nurses who complete a SSKIN (Skin
assessment, Support surface, Keep
Turning/Moving, Incontinence/moisture
management, and Nutrition evaluation of their
patients identified to be at risk when completing
the Braden scale on Sunday. This allows the RN to
review and establish the existing PI prevention plan
of care and make note of any concerns needed to
be discussed with the team the following morning
with the patient. On Monday, the team rounds for
one hour on the high risk patients with concerns
for wound care, non-adherence, or evaluation of
sitting hours. The patient and their family is the
focus with each discipline discussing and making
adjustments to patient plan of care as needed.
After doing this for almost two years, I must
say that this bedside evaluation has become more
of a multidiscipline effort with patient-centered
focus. Therapist have been learning more of
nursing interventions and nursing learning more of
therapist interventions, it has been amazing to see
the growth of knowledge and positive effects this
has had on patient outcomes. The team then
makes recommendations for care. When the
Wound Nurse is not available, this team is led by
the SWAT nurse on the unit with great success. For
patients not seen by the team, all patients
identified at risk are discussed with the Primary RN
that day using the SSKIN template and recs are
made as needed. Frontline nursing staff has also
been empowered with this team effort to call a
9
VOLUME 25 ISSUE 19 SEPTEMBER 2019
“time out” when new skin breakdown is seen as to
gather a prompt team response and plan of care
for sitting and rehab goals.
In conclusion, we have seen a reduction in
the number of HAPI, reduction of wounds
worsening during wheelchair sitting time, increase
in the number of wounds healed during therapy,
increase patient involvement in care, and increase
communication amongst the disciplines. This
multidisciplinary SSKIN Huddle team leads the way
in team work and increasing patient involvement
and outcomes. This original team hopes to spread
the knowledge and framework for each unique unit
in the hospital in hopes to reduce HAPI, increase
interdisciplinary communication, empowering
frontline nurses, increase patient involvement in
care, and reduce patient harm. Great job rehab SCI
Interdisciplinary SSKIN Huddle Team! Keep up the
great work!
