Happy New Year! I am hon-ored to be president for a sec-ond term; you are stuck with
me for one more year! We have twonew board members that I am happyto introduce: Katelyn Walker, AlliedAIA and Michael Coleman, AIA.Both are eager to take on responsi-bilities, and we are excited to havetheir talents on board. There areseveral outreach programs I wouldlike to continue to develop. We madegreat strides in 2018 with our localhigh school and community collegecompetition. We have finalized theprogram and are trying to launch abeta competition this spring in orderto work out any bugs. We are alsovery close in assisting Joliet JuniorCollege in starting an AIAS chapterwith a high level of student interest. We will be hosting a resume build-ing workshop sometime over thesummer. Student and recent gradu-ates will be able to learn whatemployers are looking for in aresume and portfolio.
W e a r el o o k i n ginto moreplant toursthroughoutthe year. Wewill be schedul-ing a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’sBradley House, thanks to BobBohlmann, AIA. There is also a lot ofinterest in seeing Mies van derRohe’s Farnsworth House in Plano,IL. We will try to send a “Save theDate” email blast once dates havebeen finalized.
We sent out a questionnaire whichfocused on what venue you wouldlike to see in 2019 for our chaptermeetings. Most members were infavor of Flossmoor Station but it wasdecided, as a Board, that we wouldpick two or three locations and rotatethroughout the year. One locationwill be in the Bourbonnais/Kankakeearea in order better serve ourSouthern members.
I am still pursuing a Casino Night, which will focus on thanking currentsponsors that have contributed toour success in 2018-2019. The socialevent will be treated as a networkingevent with great prizes!

President’s Message...continued from page 1
As many of you may rememberfrom two years ago, AIA Nationalhad established some ground rulesfor its chapters to provide sevencore member services. We had toprove that our chapter is able toprovide these core member serv-ices to our members in order to getour accreditation status renewed. These service categories are com-munications, education, advocacy, public outreach, governance, membership, finance, and opera-tions. If we didn’t show this, wewere threatened with joining theNortheast Chapter to form a newcombined chapter or be absorbedby the Prairie Chapter.
Our 2018 Vice President, ValerieNawojski, went to Washington DC
for a three-day semi-nar. The accreditationper iod i s end ingFebruary 2019 andt h e s u b m i s s i o nprocess is completelyonline this year. Many items have changed sincethe last round of accreditation inorder to make the submittalprocess more streamlined. Theother chapters that were repre-sented at the seminar were alsosmall chapters. Some were com-pletely volunteer and some hadone or two paid staff members. Allof them have the same concernswe do: lack of member involve-ment, lack of EmergingProfessionals, recruitment, lowsubmission rate for design awards
and scholarships.Thank you, Valerie, for spearheading ourlaborious renewalprocess.
Our membershiphas kept steady, with our currenttally at ninety +/- and we are stillfinancially stable. Steve Reardon,Edvin Mertdogan, John Benwareand myself had an enthusiasticfinance meeting in December to goover our tax records and currentfinancial situation. A financialsummary synopsis is availableupon request.
