AIA/EIC eastwords NEWSLETTER OF THE EASTERN ILLINOIS CHAPTER H appy New Year! I am hon- ored to be president for a sec- ond term; you are stuck with me for one more year! We have two new board members that I am happy to introduce: Katelyn Walker, Allied AIA and Michael Coleman, AIA. Both are eager to take on responsi- bilities, and we are excited to have their talents on board. There are several outreach programs I would like to continue to develop. We made great strides in 2018 with our local high school and community college competition. We have finalized the program and are trying to launch a beta competition this spring in order to work out any bugs. We are also very close in assisting Joliet Junior College in starting an AIAS chapter with a high level of student interest. We will be hosting a resume build- ing workshop sometime over the summer. Student and recent gradu- ates will be able to learn what employers are looking for in a resume and portfolio. We are looking into more plant tours throughout the year. We will be schedul- ing a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bradley House, thanks to Bob Bohlmann, AIA. There is also a lot of interest in seeing Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House in Plano, IL. We will try to send a “Save the Date” email blast once dates have been finalized. We sent out a questionnaire which focused on what venue you would like to see in 2019 for our chapter meetings. Most members were in favor of Flossmoor Station but it was decided, as a Board, that we would pick two or three locations and rotate throughout the year. One location will be in the Bourbonnais/Kankakee area in order better serve our Southern members. I am still pursuing a Casino Night, which will focus on thanking current sponsors that have contributed to our success in 2018-2019. The social event will be treated as a networking event with great prizes! - American - Institute of - Architects Jan. 2019 Jan. 2019 Issue 1.19 Issue 1.19 www.aiaeic.org www.aiaeic.org in this issue... President’s Message...continued from page 1

As many of you may rememberfrom two years ago, AIA Nationalhad established some ground rulesfor its chapters to provide sevencore member services. We had toprove that our chapter is able toprovide these core member serv-ices to our members in order to getour accreditation status renewed. These service categories are com-munications, education, advocacy, public outreach, governance, membership, finance, and opera-tions. If we didn’t show this, wewere threatened with joining theNortheast Chapter to form a newcombined chapter or be absorbedby the Prairie Chapter.

Our 2018 Vice President, ValerieNawojski, went to Washington DC

for a three-day semi-nar. The accreditationper iod i s end ingFebruary 2019 andt h e s u b m i s s i o nprocess is completelyonline this year. Many items have changed sincethe last round of accreditation inorder to make the submittalprocess more streamlined. Theother chapters that were repre-sented at the seminar were alsosmall chapters. Some were com-pletely volunteer and some hadone or two paid staff members. Allof them have the same concernswe do: lack of member involve-ment, lack of EmergingProfessionals, recruitment, lowsubmission rate for design awards

and scholarships.Thank you, Valerie, for spearheading ourlaborious renewalprocess.

Our membershiphas kept steady, with our currenttally at ninety +/- and we are stillfinancially stable. Steve Reardon,Edvin Mertdogan, John Benwareand myself had an enthusiasticfinance meeting in December to goover our tax records and currentfinancial situation. A financialsummary synopsis is availableupon request.
