President’s Message July 2016 Hi and welcome to all of our new families who have started with us! I hope everyone had a happy and safe Term 2 holiday. Skip-A-Thon The recent skip-a-thon was a huge success and our school community has raised well over $11,000, which will go towards new electronic whiteboards for the classrooms. Congratulations to our winning class, 2/1C for raising the most money. You will be rewarded with a prize during Term 3. Thank you once again to Monica Hood, Lyn Buckland, Dimity McCredie, Abby McCredie, Jenny Lee and Glenn Moulds for their help. 5 Cent Fundraiser During May, the P&C held a 5-cent fundraiser challenge. Children collected 5- cent pieces and the collection jars were full! In total, the children collected $1,050.25 what a fabulous effort! Huge congratulations to the winning class 4C for collecting the most coins! This Friday, 4C will be treated to a BBQ and ice blocks during school hours. A huge thank you to our P&C Vice President, Ashley King for coordinating this new, and successful fundraiser for the school. Start saving your 5c coins for next year!! New Principal We would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new Principal, Marilyn Bourne. Marilyn comes to us from Stuart House School and is keen to continue a great partnership with the Killara community. A heartfelt thank you to Gill Appave for filling the role so wonderfully over the past year. Gill will return to her role of K-2 Assistant Principal, off-class. Welcome to Killara Public School Marilyn!

5 Cent Fundraiser

During May, the P&C held a 5-cent

fundraiser challenge. Children collected 5-

cent pieces and the collection jars were full!

In total, the children collected $1,050.25 –

what a fabulous effort!

Huge congratulations to the winning class

4C for collecting the most coins! This Friday,

4C will be treated to a BBQ and ice blocks

during school hours. A huge thank you to

our P&C Vice President, Ashley King for

coordinating this new, and successful

fundraiser for the school.

Road Safety

I’d like to welcome our newest P&C

Committee Member, Tania Ekins to the role

of Road Traffic & Safety Co-ordinator.

Tania will be liaising with local council

members, roads and traffic authority and the

school community to create safety

awareness and a safer environment for our

children at school drop off and pick up.

Tania and I are currently circulating a

petition to improve road safety in both

Ridgeland Ave and Fitzroy Street. Thank

you to all parents who have signed our

petition already.

Safety Around the School

We have recently met with Councillor David Citer, Councillor Christiane Berlioz and Council’s

Director of Operations to discuss safety issues surrounding the school. The council will be

conducting surveys of the school zone and looking into the possibility of a larger drop-off area

at the front of the school in Ridgeland Avenue. They will also be reassessing the bus stop in

Calvert Avenue. This is encouraging news, but we must keep in mind that safety starts with

drivers. We can have all the warning signs in place, but it takes just one bad driving decision to

cause an accident and/or injury.

Council Rangers and Parking Officers will soon start patrolling the streets around the school.

The two most common parking signs in our school zones are 'No Stopping' and 'No Parking'

signs. We have all seen them, but what do they really mean?

A 'NO STOPPING' sign means that the driver of a vehicle must not stop at any time on a

length of road or in an area to which the 'No Stopping' sign applies - not for a minute, not for a

second, not for a jiffy. This excludes vehicles with a Disability Parking Permit. The penalty for

stopping in a 'No Stopping' zone in a school zone is $304 and two demerit points.

A 'NO PARKING' sign means that you can only stop on a length of road or in an area to which

the 'No Parking' sign applies to drop off or pick up passengers. Around schools these are

commonly called ‘kiss and drop zones’. You can’t stay in the zone longer than two minutes and

the driver has to be within three metres of the vehicle at all times.

We all agree that the safety of our children is paramount. Please slow down, take note of signs

and obey the road rules. Thank you once again to Tania Ekins for her hard work; campaigning

for safer streets for our community.

Father’s Day Breakfast With Father's Day not so far away we are looking for volunteers to

help at the breakfast on the morning of Friday 2nd September. Year 2 traditionally runs this

much loved event and helpers are needed to cook, clean and serve food on the day. Please

contact your Year 2 class parent if you are happy to help on the day. Thank you!

Our next P&C Meeting will be held in the library on Wednesday 31st August. We are currently looking for amazing volunteers to fill several positions within the P&C (Treasurer, Newsletter co-ordinator, Fundraising co-ordinators and Uniform Shop co-ordinator). For a P&C Association to operate effectively we need to hear from parents in our school community. We invite everyone to attend and contribute ideas to our school. Sharon Tierney P&C President
