Volume 32, Number 13-2.1 February 2013, Issue 1 of 2 The Trailblazers square dancing year got off to a great start at January’s dance weekend. Don Moger kept everyone entertained with his interesting choreography. We had a chance to see combinations of calls from different positions. He made the dances fun with his lively humor and comments. A number of dancers remarked how much they enjoyed the dance. Carolyn and I have been spending the past few weeks in Mesa, Arizona. What a great opportunity to get in some challenge level workshops and dances. The sessions last two hours, so one does not get too tired. Most of the RV parks have great floors to make the dancing even easier. We are fortunate to be able to dance to two outstanding Challenge level callers, Bill Haynes and Dave Wilson. We attend at least two sessions a day. The workshops are very helpful in presenting different variations of calls and concepts. Dave is very thorough in showing many of the parts of calls that give dancers problems. Bill has a C1 concepts workshop that higher dancers would definitely appreciate. Dancers have ample opportunities to utilize the calls and concepts at the workshops and at Bill’s and Dave’s regular dances. If you have a chance to visit Mesa during the winter season, make sure to drop in on one of Bill’s or Dave’s sessions. It will be well worth it. One thing that becomes very apparent from our visit to Mesa is the fact that all dancers can benefit from dancing to lower levels. Attending lower level workshops and dances strengthens a dancer’s command of the calls. I have found that many of my mistakes are not to calls at my dance level, but instead from levels that are lower. It is important to always continue to build on the foundation of calls that we learned previously. Besides, lower level dancers benefit when higher level dancers join them in a square. Hopefully, Trailblazers who attend the Sunday dances will come and visit those who attend the Saturday dances. It would be a benefit to everyone. At our last dance a guest who was on the single’s rotation had to sit out a dance with her partner. Sitting out a tip is not unusual and is routine if you don’t have an exact number of squares to accommodate every dancer. When there are an odd number of single dancers, some Trailblazers members will split up so that a single dancer has the chance to dance. When squares aren’t exact in number and guests are forced to sit out a tip, it would be nice if club members would offer to sit out the tip in order to let the guests dance. I believe that our club’s friendliness has made many guests feel welcome, and we are rewarded by their return to future dances. Sitting out an occasional tip so guests can dances would be one more way to exhibit our friendliness. A list of tentative Trailblazers 2013-2014 Board candidates can be found on page 3 of this newsletter. Nominations for Trailblazers Board will close at the end of the March weekend and elections will take place in April. If you are interested in being on the Board, let John Martin or any other Board member know. We look forward to your support. On December 6, 2012, Sherman and Barbara Fenster sent greetings and a note: “We just finished reading the December TRAILBLAZER. As usual we enjoy this publication immensely. In addition to helping the club financially, this is one of the reasons we have retained our membership. Although we are retired from square dancing, we enjoy staying abreast of the club’s progress and people’s lives that we interacted with for many years . . . Happy Dancing.” Sherman and Barbara made many significant contributions to the Trailblazers during the time they served both as volunteers and Trailblazers Board Members. Trailblazers thanks you for sharing your current thoughts with us — as always the actively dancing members are more than delighted to hear from and interested in what is happening to Trailblazers retirees. HINT to other retirees and/or former Trailblazers members who have moved away.

We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a note at [email protected] or Rod & Hal, 5740 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA 92115-3720

Lee Kopman, on January 6, 2013, sent an email: “Hi to you guys — As you know, we have new people taking over the Zip Coder — Dave and Becky Knapp — They are a wonderful couple — (no they did not ask me to write this to you). Hopefully, the California contingent will continue to support, what I know will be an outstanding publication.”

is the magazine of the advanced and challenge dancers. In each issue are articles about square dancing around the world, choreography, and the listings of upcoming

weekends, festivals, conventions and special events. In September, a special Directory issue contains not only the regular features, but also the listings of the advanced and challenge callers around the world, magazines, square dance aids, glossaries, videos and other items of interest. Bronc Wise — Trailblazers February 2013 Caller

Bronc joined his first square dance class in 1975, and 16 weeks later he called his first square dance tip. Since that time, he has been featured at dances, festivals, workshops, resorts and caller schools all over the U.S. and 21 foreign countries. Many dancers feel that Bronc’s smooth, flowing calling is like "floating on air." They would also warn you to watch out for a twinkle in those big, brown eyes as Bronc is a fine calling technician known for inventive and challenging maneuvers. An accomplished guitarist, mandolin player, and studio technician, Bronc has played on many square dance releases as well as radio and TV spots. His first "on stage" experience came at the age of 12 when he started playing in a rock band. He is currently in the process of recording a compilation of instrumental surf and rock n’ roll tunes.

As can be seen from the following PARTIAL list, Bronc has recorded a couple, several , well, you use your favorite definitive word for more than a plenty — square dance releases . . . . a number that have been top-selling records. 'Til The Mountains Disappear; 30 Days; All That Heaven Will Allow; Another You; Bad, Bad Leroy Brown; Bare Necessities; Brandy;

Butterfly; Common Man; Crying Waiting Hoping; Delta Dirt; Doctor Funky; Dolly Hoe; Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home; Don't You

Wish It Was True; Down By The Riverside; False Hearted Girl; Fill 'Er Up; Friends Of Mine; From Me To You; Gimme 3 Steps; Guitars

And Cadillacs; High Octane; Higher Power; Hooked On A Feeling; I'd Really Love To See Ya Tonight; I'll Be Gone; I'm In Love All Over;

Is Anybody Goin' To San Antone; It's My Party; Lay Your Love On Me; Let's Work Together; Lightning; Little Bit Of Love; Lookin' For Love;

Looking For A Feeling; Love Generation; Love Me Tender; Lovin' Cajun Style; Many A Long And Lonesome Hiway; Night Coach Out Of

Dallas; Ob La Di, Ob La Da; Old King Kong; Once Upon A Time; One Moment In Time; One Way Rider; Petticoat Hoedown; Pick Me Up

On Your Way Down; Q.R.T.; RaggMopp; Right In The Wrong Direction; Rock And Roll Angel; Rollin Sugar; Seminole Wind; Shaddup

You Face; Shake It Up; Some Memories Just Won't Die; Something To Talk About; South; Sunshine In The Rain; Super Slab; Supreme

Unleaded; Sweet Dreams Of You; Sweet Home Alabama; Swingin'; Take Me; Tears In Heaven; Texas On A Saturday Night; The Best of

My Love; The City Put The Country Back In Me; The Way I Am; This Time I'm In It For The Love; Top 'Er Off; True Believer; Unchain My

Heart; Uptown; Vacation; Walk On; What Are We Doin' Lonesome; You Got It; You Keep Me Hanging On.

It seems like King of the Road Square Dance Recordings should be included in this list. Bronc and his wife, Fia, were married during the 2012 Silver State Square and Round Dance Festival in Reno, Nevada and now reside in Denver, Colorado.

Don Moger — Trailblazers January 2103 Caller Quotes

Page 6 February 2013, Issue 1

♫ It’s a long afternoon; don’t worry. ♫ Some don’t look so good. ♫ I know you all did the same thing. ♫ It’s not optional. ♫ What do you mean, “Oh” . . .It’s not an O. ♫ I don’t think I wanted to call that. ♫ I didn’t think my battery would run out. ♫ Boy, that one was busy. ♫ Make a decision . . . It’s not multiple choice. ♫ The C2 people could hear a lot better that you guys. ♫ I want you to know, this is your last excuse. ♫ Don’t forget, I’m here to help you.

♫ Is that what we got? Damn, that’s not what I

wanted. It’s a possibility you all could have gotten it wrong. ♫ Well, we’re not doing that one again, only because it might have been my fault. ♫ It seems like a funny traffic pattern you have there. ♫ Somebody has to get on the other side . . . just push them out of the way. ♫ Did I mention, you need to do all the calls right. ♫ Are we ready? . . . I’ll gave you extra time. ♫ Are you OK back there? . . . You’re in big trouble up here. ♫ It’s lucky you can dance all positions. ♫ Most of the time I make the decision whether we do it over again. If I think I’m wrong, we never do it over again. ♫ If I ask you who your corner is, you have to have done every-thing right up to that point.
