President’s Message

Summer is here! The ASHRAE fiscal year is coming to an end and our local chapter is on break until the August meeting. I cannot believe how quickly the year went by. Our chapter had a banner year. We averaged just under 100 people per meeting. We exceeded our Research Promotion (fundraising) goal of $63,000. We have established a Scholarship Endowment that, when fully funded, will produce scholarship money on an annual basis. We have resurrected a YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) group that had been

dormant for a couple of years. And those are just some highlights…. It appears that the momentum is carrying over into next year. Programs are already being nailed down for the Fall, and we have the Society President scheduled to visit for one of our Spring meetings. We will have our second annual skeet shoot and Top Golf events in the Fall. And there will be more. Please contact Michael Langton for more information on our Summer Planning Session if you would like to be involved. And finally, having completed the year as chapter president, I have a few closing thoughts. Serving in ASHRAE at the chapter level has been one of the most valuable experiences of my career. ASHRAE has offered leadership “training” that the workplace would rarely offer. In addition, I was given the

opportunity to network with other industry leaders that I, otherwise, would have never crossed paths with. ASHRAE service has produced industry friends and memories that I will never forget. At times, the commitment was a bit overwhelming since I actually have a life outside of work. But in hindsight, the time, effort, and sacrifice that goes into a wonderful organization like this was well worth it (just don’t contact my wife for a second opinion). Thank you all for supporting our chapter this year. Please offer the same support to our future leaders! See you in August! I forgot what it was like to show up at a meeting with no responsibilities. Elliot Millican, P.E. 2014-2015 ASHRAE Houston President

Young Engineers in ASHRAE

The Young Engineers of ASHRAE has become a very successful group over the past few years for the Houston Chapter. The YEA group was formed to enhance member benefits for young professional ASHRAE members by giving them the opportunity to expand their knowledge about the industry, as well as socialize and network with other young professionals. Once a month, the members of YEA meet for lunch or happy hour. During these meetings members are able to talk with their fellow young professionals, meet new young professionals in the industry, as well as discuss the current happenings in the industry. These meetings are a great way for members to learn as well as teach others what they have learned about the industry. YEA also offers a few larger events each year. Lunch-and-learn events happen a few times a year in which different companies lecture and give tours of their facility and products, providing a better hands-on understanding. YEA is always welcoming new young professionals in the HVAC industry to participate. If you or anyone you know may be interested in getting involved, please contact Mitchell Campbell at 713-782-2701 or [email protected] Mitchell Campbell / Alex Roessler Young Engineers in ASHRAE Chair

Editor Walik’s Note: Mitchell Campbell, our YEA Chair, was in Atlanta for some HVAC classes. Below is a summary of the learning opportunity and a few photos that Mitchell took. ASHRAE’s HVAC Design Training June 15th-17th at the ASHRAE HQ in Atlanta, GA (a LEED Platinum facility). Provides intensive, practical training for HVAC designers and others involved in the delivery of HVAC services. In three days, gain practical skills and knowledge in designing, installing and maintaining HVAC systems that can be put to immediate use. Next classes in Sept & Oct. https://www.ashrae.org/education--certification/hvac-design-training Mitchell Campbell / YEA Chair
