The Tennessee MATHCOUNTS competition was held on Saturday, March 16, 2013. Forty six students from nineteen different schools competed for the honor to represent Tennessee at the National MATHCOUNTS competition in Washington, D. C., May 9 -12, 2013. Over half of these mathletes® (6th, 7th and 8th graders from across the state) were on teams representing local Chapters of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) and the remainder competed as individual representatives from the local Chapter competitions. Traditionally, the coach of the winning team at the State level serves as the coach of the Tennessee Team and the top four scorers, regardless of the Chapter or team from which they came to the competition, form the team that represents Tennessee at the National Competition. This year the four members of the winning team are from four different schools, Martin Luther King Magnet (Nashville); Memphis University School (Memphis); Montgomery Bell Academy (Nashville); and White Station Middle School (Memphis). Congratulations to Maggie Qian, the coach of the winning team from Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville! Travel time to Nashville from the far reaches of our great state can exceed four hours. To assure our mathletes’ skills were sharp for the competition, TSPE and the Tennessee Engineering Foundation hosted the competitors and coaches at a local hotel on Friday before the competition. The competition began at the Tennessee Engineering Center with registration, breakfast and some encouraging words from the TSPE President, Jake Greear, PE; Jim Thweatt, MATHCOUNTS State Coordinator and Hal Balthrop, PE, Architects’ and Engineers’ Licensure Board. Once the competitors were settled, the Sprint Round, which is thirty written questions to be answered in forty minutes without the use of a calculator, was conducted. While those exams were being graded, the Target Round was held. I thought I’d take a minute to describe to each of you the evolution of my involvement in TSPE and what I’ve gotten out of it. My hope is that at least a few of you will “take the plunge” and commit to serving as an officer, on a committee, or as a volunteer at one of the numerous Chapter and State sponsored events. I think that

you’ll find, as I describe below, that such service most often requires less of a demand on your personal time than you think and, in the end, is overwhelmingly a positive experience.

My first exposure to TSPE came when I was hired by the City of Morristown back in 2001. My boss, then City Engineer Bryan Fowler,

was a member and invited me to attend a Lakeway Chapter meeting. I joined and for the first few years was your standard card-carrying member. I enjoyed the benefits of a monthly PDH and the camaraderie of a more social setting where I could interact with the local engineers who often called on me for City-related matters. Thanks to all of you who showed up for Engineers’ Day on the Hill to support your profession on a windy and rainy day in early March. We had about 80 engineers who visited with legislators and expressed concerns about proposed bills that impact the safety of Tennesseans and the role engineers play in improving our

communities. The issues of concern include:

• opposing the proposal to allow cities to adopt codes for commercial and residential construction which are less restrictive than the building codes adopted by the State Fire Marshal (HB 92/SB 281) – as a result of the efforts of many, the bill will be on hold for this session and the State Fire Marshal will get interested parties together to discuss seismic concerns;

• endorsing the bill to update the National Electrical Safety code for supply stations and lines (HB 350/SB 492) – this bill has been signed by the Governor;

• opposing efforts to limit the ability of state agencies to contract with the private sector for services (HB 1052/SB 1188) – at deadline time, this bill is still being considered in committee;

• supporting legislation to establish a STEM stipend for college students with declared majors in science, technology, engineering or math (HB 241/SB 19) – the fiscal note of $7.4 million has slowed down this bill;

• concern for a bill requiring manufacturers to verify the safety of products to be added to public drinking water systems (HB 1215/SB 1274) – in its current form, this bill will not pass, but amendments are being considered addressing concern for fluoride; and

• supporting a proposal to phase out the professional privilege tax over 10 years (HB 318/SB 277) – because of its huge fiscal impact, this bill is not making progress.

If you would like more information on any of these, let me know ([email protected]) or go to www.legislature.state.tn.us.

If you missed the grassroots lobbying effort on March 5, it’s not too late to contact your state legislators. Legislators appreciate hearing from their constituents. They value the unique perspective engineers bring to the issues. Don’t know who your legislators are? Go to www.legislature.state.tn.us and fill in your home address in the lower right corner.

It was such a great success in 2012 that we hope you will mark your calendars for Sept 12-13, when TSPE, ACEC of Tennessee, and ASCE will once again have a combined annual meeting at the Embassy Suites Murfreesboro.

The NSPE Annual Meeting will be in Minneapolis July 17-21 and the schedule will be full of interesting professional development opportunities.

We encourage you to participate in the activities of your chapter, state, and national professional society.

The Tennessee Engineering Foundation (TEF) awarded three students scholarships. Rebecca Escue from Portland, TN, who is a junior in mechanical engineering at Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville won the $3,500 Dorothy and Arthur Crouch Memorial Scholarship. TEF scholarships of $3,000 each were awarded to Dustin Morris from Lewisburg, TN, who is a junior in electrical engineering at Tennessee Technological University, and to Nicholas True from Georgetown, TN, who is a sophomore in mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The TEF was established by a group of engineering organizations to advance and support the engineering profession in the State of Tennessee. TEF raises funds for scholarships and other kindergarten - 12th grade science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education support activities, such as MATHCOUNTS. The TEF is headquartered at the Tennessee Engineering Center, 800 Fort Negley Blvd., Nashville, TN, 615-242-2486.

PRESIDENT’S ARTICLE continued from page 1I served my two-year term and then another two years with the Board as the dysfunctional officer rotation was ironed out within the Lakeway Chapter. When I completed the second Board term in 2009, I took a year off from officer service. During that year I was asked if I’d be willing to go through the State leadership cycle beginning in 2010. I was both flattered by the request and wary of the daunting responsibility involved. Not only did I question whether I could fit the additional time demands into my schedule but also my own worthiness. After mulling it over and discussing the matter with my new employer, McGill Associates, I accepted and have been on the four-year roller coaster ride ever since.

Now that you’ve seen what the typical (or atypical at times) process is for someone getting involved in TSPE leadership, I hope that you won’t be turned off by the length of service generally involved. From my experience, the time flies, the amount of time required to fulfill

your obligations is surprisingly limited, and your employer will be more supportive than you thought. I’ve continually been exposed to new opportunities, met and worked with many interesting people, and been pushed to grow beyond my comfort zone. During my TSPE service, I’ve particularly been struck by the importance of the duties that the Society performs on behalf of engineers and the public at-large, as well as the number of good people in the support structure that help to carry them out. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far and know that I’m better off for it. I hope that you, too, will step out and assist in some way. You’ll be glad you did.

Humbly yours, John Greear, PE

eight written questions in twenty four minutes. Calculators are permitted in the Target Round and the problems certainly require them!

Following the two rounds of individual competition, each team of four worked collectively in the Team Round to solve a set of ten problems in twenty minutes. Then the competitors, coaches, parents, guests and volunteers relaxed over a pizza lunch. After lunch, the top eight individual competitors participated in the Countdown Round. Conducted in a single elimination bracket format, two competitors at a time competed to solve problems in under forty five seconds.

Following the Countdown Round, Jake Greear, PE, TSPE President, presented the awards The winner of the Countdown Round winner was Tony Huang from the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville and the runner up was Ohm Patel from White Station Middle School in Memphis.

The winner of the Team Round was Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville. Team members were Tony Huang, Ben Rosenthal, Jack Sullivan, and Micah White. Their Coach Maggie Qian, will also coach the Tennessee Team in Washington. The second place team was from White Station Middle School, Memphis; and the third place team was from Jefferson Middle School, Oak Ridge.
