One day I was working in my workshop when my wifecame in, stopped and looked around.

“What did I come here for?” she asked.

I didn’t want her to feel alone, so I replied, “Who areyou?”

Little Johnny watched fascinated as his mothersmoothed cold cream on her face.

President’s Message:

To all our members welcome back after the Christmasbreak. No doubt we have all come back with a few ex-tra kilos around our girth and have good intentions, indeed New Year’s Resolutions of getting back intoshape with exercise. While the club was only closedfor two weeks over Christmas the return was strong, giving support to the theory we are all working togetherand moving ahead. A good feeling.

Our Christmas party held at the Seven Hills/Toongabbie RSL was again a great success with overfifty of the club members and their partners attending.

It was very pleasing to see support coming from newmembers all of whom commented favorably on the gettogether.

It was good to see one of our past members here tocatch up with some old mates.

John Hughes had togive up the job as ClubLibrarian when the dustseemed to be affectinghis health. It’s good tosee that his move to thegood air of the CentralCoast has considerablyimproved his health(and his appetite too).

Again we were graced by the at-tendance of the big fellow in the“Santa” suit who had his pantsknocked off when a rather smallishyoung fellow from an adjoiningtable spotted him and let everyoneknow he was there.Naturally Santa obliged by listen-ing, as Santa’s do, and gave him alolly before sending him on hisway.

It was disappointing to get the news the “Breed” pro-gram had been cancelled due to the lack of supportfrom the school, staff, parents and kids. This wassomething the club members were enthusiastic aboutand had been looking forward to being part of it.However there is a possibility of a similar program inthe wind and I will tell you more as details becomeavailable, I hope we can approach this with the sameenthusiasm as we did with “Breed”. I want to thank allthose who offered to help. While disappointing that theprogram did not go ahead, again it showed that we arecommunity minded and prepared to help wherever wecan.

Our Maxi day was well supported by members andvisitors and again a very successful day, with LindsaySkinner who demonstrated how to split turn using pa-per glued between two pieces of wood then separatingthem to form two identical shapes.

The use for these are endless, so let the imaginationrun wild with ideas. Some were his shelf supports, halfplant wall mount bowls and decorative box framed dis-plays.

Lindsay also showed how you can do decorative faceplate turning by cutting the piece into strips, movingthem all off set before gluing back together, a very in-teresting concept and effect.

He spent a considerable time turning a leg for a smallstool, demonstrating how it went together and cutdecorative grooves using the sharpened head of awood screw (a simple tool he made). He also ex-plained some upholstery methods and techniques.

He also showed us how tomake sure you put your jobback onto the lathe in theexact way it was before youtook it off.All it required was grinding alittle vee groove into the spurcentre.Put your work back so thatthe groove matches.

Lindsay went on to explain how he came across theidea of cutting up thin worn out angle grinding bladesto be used as a way to decorate your pieces (similar toTypography). This seemed very effective and hadmembers on their feet gaining much information sothat they could use it on their master pieces at a laterdate.

The day finished up with a discussion on epoxies andtheir many uses, again from decorative purposes togluing and filling. This is a topic which could take a fullday on its own. Lindsay had on show a vast display ofwork he had accumulated over time which also gath-ered extensive interest.

A good day, very interesting and informative. Thanks Lindsay.

Bunnings BarbequeSunday 31st January

Our latest success was on Sunday wherein we heldour first sausage sizzle at Bunnings Blacktown Store.

A very interesting and exciting day as we had gofersrunning for supplies that had been exhausted on aregular basis. All that aside, a very rewarding day witha lot of fun.

The concept of having two shifts worked well givingrelief and time off for the workers. The changeoverwas incident-free even at its busiest time.

Due to the cooler nature of the day, despite the occa-sional showers, Bunnings had a very busy day andnaturally we did also.

Members who took part include Dave Matthews, Ro-han McCardell, Eddie Catford, Brian Brooks, WayneHipwell, Ken Voden, Kevin Hilton, Bob Young, RonDevine, Manny Farrugia, Bob Taylor and Bob Jarvis.

A special thanks to all in the preparation and participa-tion on the day. It is the working together as a groupthat makes these activities all worthwhile. All had a great time and there is plenty of anticipationfor our next barbeque outing on 24 th April.

Our calendar for the year is alive with activities withtwenty five of the fifty two weekends full. There arealso a lot of mid week days active with membershipdays, classes etc. This is very encouraging and re-warding for the club committee.

Vale Edward Arthur EdwardsIt is with sadness that we report the death of one ofour foundation members of this club, Ted Edwards.Ted was the first convenor (now called president) andfor many years was the chief instructor for the eveningclasses.

I visited his home in March 2007 to do a story for thisnewsletter and I remember my amazement at theamount of machinery and tools that filled his hugeshed, or should I say, workshop. Wood lathes andmetal lathes, drills, mills, saws, the works. And he wasexpert on the use of all of them, thanks in large part tohis time serving in the Navy and as a teacher at TAFE.

Ted will no doubt be sadly missed by his many friendsin the woodturning community.

NEW MEMBERSCongratulation and welcome to all our new mem-bers this month. We hope your stay is both longterm and rewarding

Natureby Neil Guthrie

I hiked along a country roadThere was dust beneath my feetThe grass on either side was lush and greenAmong the towering eucalyptsA caroling rang outThe currawong was heard but was not seen

Looking through the green aboveThe sky was crystal clearAnd sunlight dappled shadows on the roadRain pools were softly rippledBy my passing as I wentAnd nature seemed to ease my heavy load

I wondered at the beautyOf the things that I could seeAnd nature’s colours always seemed so rightThe harmony was perfectThe ambience was pureMy spirit lifted and my heart was light

As long as nature offered thisThen life would need no moreThe stimulation here was all for freeYou needed nothing man madeNo chemical or weedJust take the time to feel the things we see

How to Dance in the Rain

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderlygentleman in his 80's arrived to have stitches re-moved from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry ashe had an appointment at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowingit would be over an hour before someone would toable to see him. I saw him looking at his watch anddecided, since I was not busy with another patient, Iwould evaluate his wound. On exam, it was wellhealed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got theneeded supplies to remove his sutures and redresshis wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he hadanother doctor's appointment this morning, as he wasin such a hurry.

The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go tothe nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I in-quired as to her health.

He told me that she had been there for a while andthat she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.

As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he wasa bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who hewas, that she had not recognized him in five yearsnow.

I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go everymorning, even though she doesn't know who youare?'

He smiled as he patted my hand and said,'She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is.'

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumpson my arm, and thought,

'That is the kind of love I want in my life.'

True love is neither physical, nor romantic.

True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, willbe, and will not be.

With all the jokes and fun that are in e-mails, some-times there is one that comes along that has an im-portant message. This one I thought I could sharewith you.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the bestof everything; they just make the best of everythingthey have.

I hope you share this with someone you care about. Ijust did.

'Life isn't about how to survive the storm,

But how to dance in the rain.'
