Promote home kitchengardening to removepesticide from our bowl

Wednesday, 22 August, 2012

Some cases of poisoning caused by thechemicals in fruits and vegetables have beenfound these days. Recently, the chairman ofthe Myanmar Organic Agriculture Group andhis family has developed headaches, nauseaand vomiting after eating fresh vegetable dishon their dining table. He could confirm thecause of the case as he got the pesticide smellfrom the dish.

Pesticides residue present in the fruits andvegetables is gradually spoiling our health.

Each and every vegetable and fruit itemhas to be bought from the market. But thequality of the available vegetables is lost to theartificial fertilizers and pesticides administeredin the large scale farming. One major worryis that the vegetables and fruits produced inlarge scale contain chemicals which are harmfulto health.

In fact, chemical residues can be in thefruits and vegetables for about six or sevendays and the chemicals can’t be washed off thefruits and vegetables within at least five or sixdays after they are sprayed with pesticides. Toget the clean crops, we must use salt and waterto wash the vegetables after five or six days toget the clean crops.

However, due to rapid urbanization, peoplehave to buy every vegetable and fruit itemfrom the market, no matter how harmful thesenice-looking items are.

Therefore, today is the time for promotingkitchen gardening of vegetables for selfconsumption at home to produce chemical-free fruits and vegetables and to build greensurroundings, healthy lifestyles and developingwork culture.

To get chemical-free crops, we shouldcultivate them at home without harmfulfertilizers and pesticides. In this way, we willbe able to get rid our bowl of poison.

With regard to the recent incidents in the Rakhine Stateof Myanmar, some individuals and organizations from abroadhave issued statements based on the false and fabricatednews reporting of some foreign news agencies andorganizations.

It is obvious that the violence in the Rakhine State areneither the conflict between two religious groups of differentfaith nor humanitarian issue. It was only the violence conflictbetween two communities within a State of Myanmarfollowing a criminal act. As a result of the riots, 88 people losttheir lives of which 31 people were Rakhine and 57 wereMuslim Bengalis. Similarly, houses and religious buildingsfrom both communities were burnt down.

Reviewing the above-mentioned destruction, loss oflives and injury, it is clear that it was not a case of persecutionor oppression by one race to another. An investigationcommittee was formed immediately to carry out investigationand to take actions according to law.

The Government took immediate actions with fullrestraint to restore law and order and stability in places whereriots broke out since the very beginning of violence. As aresult, law and order in Rakhine State is improving andoverall situation is now returning to normalcy. TheGovernment of Myanmar has never practiced policy ofviolence against Muslims or any other faiths. Therefore, theGovernment totally rejects accusations made by someorganizations that the Government is practicing such apolicy of abuses.

The Government has been working closely withinternational community for relief and rehabilitation for thevictims of both communities in a non-discriminatory andtransparent manner.

Similarly, the diplomatic corps and UN Agencies inMyanmar have been explained in detail by the responsibleMinisters about the true situation. Moreover, the Governmenthas also arranged a trip for them to Rakhine State to observethe situation on ground.

Moreover, the Special Representative of the UNSecretary General Mr.Vijay Nambiar, the Special Rapporteuron Human Rights Mr. Thomas Ojea Quintana, the Turkishdelegation headed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Ahmet

Davutoglu, the President of Indonesia Red Cross Mr. YusufKalla, and Representative and Assistant Seceretary Generalof the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Mr. AttaA1-manam Bakhit have also visited Rakhine State anddonated relief assistance to the victims. At the request of theSecretary General of the OIC, the Government has alsoextended an invitation to the Secretary General to visitMyanmar at a time of his convenience.

With a view to exposing the real cause of the incident andto give advise for the national interest, a 27-member“Investigation Commission” was formed on 17 August bythe Office of the President. The Commission composesleaders from religious organizations including Islam, intellectuals, Politicians and retired government officialsamong others. The Secretary General of the United Nationshas issued a statement in support of the formation of theCommission.

Myanmar welcomes United Nations Secretary General’sstatement and ASEAN Foreign Minister’s Statement on theaction taken by Myanmar Government regarding the situationin Rakhine State as they reflect the true situation.

The incidents in the Rakhine State are sectarian conflictswhich are purely internal affairs of a sovereign state. They arenot relating to any kind of religious persecution or religiousdiscrimination. Therefore, we will not accept, any attempt topolitically regionalize or internationalize this conflict as areligious issue. Such attempt will not contribute to findingsolutions to the problem, but will only complicate the issuefurther.

Myanmar is a country where Buddhists, Christians,Muslims and Hindus have been living together in unity andharmony throughout history.

Thus, any outside interference or instigation to hamperthe already restored peace and stability in the affected areashould be stopped and support should be rendered for theprevalence of law and order, peace and stability, reconciliationamong concerned people and for the rehabilitation of thevictims.

Bank of Canada governoroffers apology for “Asianwoman” banknote controversy

OTTAWA, 21 Aug—Following accusations of racism,Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney apologized on Mondayfor the way in which the image of an Asian woman waseliminated from the initial design of the new Canadian 100-dollar bill that began circulating in November last year.

The Canadian Press, the Toronto-based national newsagency, reported last week that the country’s central bankdropped the image of an Asian-looking female scientistpeering into a microscope after some members of severalfocus groups across Canada enlisted to review the design in2009 commented negatively.

Following a report by the market research company thatconducted the focus groups, the bank replaced the image ofthe Asian woman on the reverse of the 100-dollar banknotewith a female scientist of “neutral ethnicity,” but who appearsto be Caucasian. Carney said in a statement issued on Mondaythat the researcher depicted on the plastic polymer banknotewas drawn “so as not to resemble an actual person —therefore, the final image did not look the same as thePhotoshopped image shown to the focus groups.”

“Efforts by the banknote designers to avoid depicting aspecific individual resulted in an image that appears torepresent only one ethnic group,” which was not the bank’sintention, the governor explained.—Xinhua

Obama deeply concernedover Afghan “insider attacks”

WASHINGTON, 21 Aug—President Barack Obama onMonday said the UnitedStates needed to do more tosafeguard US troops after aspate of Afghan “insider”attacks that have left 10American troops killed in thepast two weeks.

His comments cameduring a visit by the top USmilitary officer, General MartinDempsey, to Afghanistan, where the killings of Americanforces by Afghans havetopped the agenda. Obama, who spoke to Dempsey earlierin the day, said he would reachout to Afghan PresidentHamid Karzai about thekillings.

Over theweekend, US DefenceSecretary Leon Panetta andAfghan President HamidKarzai spoke by phone andagreed to boost vetting ofAfghan recruits to try to putan end to the spiraling attacks, now averaging one a week.

In Kabul, Dempsey metwith his Afghan counterpart,General Sher MohammadKarimi, who raised the issueof insider threat at the start oftheir meeting — somethingDempsey saw as a sign ofAfghan resolve.

CAPE CANAVERAL, (Fla ),21 Aug — Spacewalkingastronauts improved thesafety of their orbiting homeon Monday by installingshields to protect againstzooming pieces ofjunk.Gennady Padalka andYuri Malenchenko hung thepanels on the Russian side ofthe International SpaceStation, after moving a bulkycrane and tossing overboarda small spherical satellite.TheRussian spacewalking

powerhouse — the two have14 spacewalks between them— kept going even afterMission Control in Moscowadvised them to take a break

3½ hours into their six-hourexcursion.

They surged aheaddespite a late start toMonday’s spacewalk, the firstat the space station in sixmonths. A leaky valvesomewhere on the Russianside forced the crew to reopenthe air lock and check the sealsto ensure a tight fit, beforePadalka and Malenchenkocould go out. Padalka assuredflight controllers they were inno rush, but admitted it was

“kind of boring” to wait anextra hour. The five 1-inch-thick micrometeorite debrispanels were supposed to beinstalled during a previousspacewalk in February, but gotput on hold when other workran long. The pieces werehauled up by the now-retiredspace shuttles.

Armor is needed toreinforce the Russian segment, which unlike the UScompartments, arrivedwithout the proper protectionalready in place. Such shieldingis crucial given the boomingthreat of space junk; even atiny scrap can inflict damage.A46-foot crane, meanwhile, needed to be moved from onespot on the Russian portion ofthe space station to another,in advance of the arrival of anew chamber a year or twofrom now. The astronauts useda companion crane for the job.

And the 20-pound, 1.7-foot-diameter research satellitehurled by Padalka will orbit forabout three months beforeburning up in the atmosphere, allowing Russian engineers to

track its movement as part of astudy on space junk. This wasthe ninth spacewalk forPadalka and the fifth forMalenchenko. It was overseenfrom Moscow and went sowell that flight controllersadded some extra chores forthe two. The only snag was anexperiment that wouldn’t closeproperly for retrieval; thespacewalkers were told to leaveit outside.

“Five hours did you say?”one of the spacewalkers askedat the five-hour mark. “Oh, wecan stay for another hour, whatdo you think?” “That’s it,”Mission Control replied. Thetwo were urged to “marvel atthe world around you” beforetaking some pictures andcalling it quits. NASA selects InSight Mars mission afterCuriosity rover

PASADENA, 21 Aug —Just two weeks after landingits Curiosity rover on Mars, the US space agency hasannounced it will send anotherrobot to the planet in 2016. TheInSight spacecraft will be astatic lander that will carryinstruments to investigateMars’ deep interior.

Scientists say this willgive them a clearer idea of howthe rocky planets formed —the Earth included. InSightbeat two other proposals in acompetition to find NASA’snext relatively low-costmission. This so-calledDiscovery class of endeavouris cost-capped at $425m(£270m; 345m euros),although that figure does notinclude the rocket to launchthe spacecraft.

InSight stands for InteriorExploration using SeismicInvestigations, Geodesy andHeat Transport. It will be ledfrom the Jet PropulsionLaboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,California. The design of thelander leans heavily on thesuccessful Phoenix probe puton the Red Planet in 2008.

But although the 2016venture will look very similar,it will carry very differentinstrumentation. A seismicexperiment will listen for“marsquakes” and use thisinformation to map theboundaries between the rocklayers inside Earth’s

neighbour.It will determine if the

planet has a liquid or solidcore, and provide some cluesas to why its surface is notdivided up into tectonic platesas on Earth.Key componentsof this package will come fromFrance and the UK. InSightwill also push a German-builtthermal probe into the surfaceto gauge Mars’ temperatureprofile.

This will reveal how theplanet is cooling. JPL willprovide the two cameras onInSight and a robotic arm. Itwill also deliver another sensorthat will very accuratelydetermine the degree to whichthe planet wobbles on itsaxis. All the data combined willinform researchers about theinternal state of Mars todayand how it has changedthrough the eons.

“This is science that hasbeen compelling for manyyears,” said John Grunsfeld, who heads up NASA’sscience division.” Seismology, for instance, is the standardmethod by which we’ve

learned to understand theinterior of the Earth—and wehave no such knowledge forMars.“This has beensomething the principalinvestigator (JPL’s BruceBanerdt) of this mission hasbeen trying to get to Mars fornearly three decades, and soI’m really thrilled that this isnow at a mature stage wherehe has been able to proposesomething that fits within thecost and schedule constraintsof the Discovery programme.”

It is clear from surfacefeatures that the Red Planetwas much more geologicallyactive in the past.

The remains of the largestvolcano in the Solar System— Olympus Mons — can beseen on Mars. When and whythis activity waned remains tobe established, but it is anissue that plays directly to thequestion of life on theplanet.Earth retains anatmosphere and water at itssurface because of theprotective magnetic fieldgenerated in its liquid iron/nickel core.— Internet

Tesco web security ‘flaw’ probed by UK datawatchdog

LONDON , 21 Aug — TheUK’s data privacy watchdogis examining the security ofTesco’s website after a stringof experts highlightedconcerns.Specialists havecriticised the way in which theglobal supermarket chainstores the passwords ofshoppers on Tesco.com.

One expert told the BBChe had warned Tesco aboutother serious issues which hehas not made public becauseof their sensitive nature.Tescosaid its security was“robust”.“We know howimportant internet security isto customers and themeasures we have are robust,”the company said in astatement. “We are nevercomplacent and workcontinuously to givecustomers the confidencethey can shop securely.” Thereis no evidence to suggestTesco has been targeted byhackers, nor that customers’personal data is at risk.

Troy Hunt, a securityexpert who revealed details ofthe flaws on his blog, told the

BBC he believed the Tescowebsite was breaking somefundamental data storagerules. “When a website storespasswords, how they’reprotected in the database isimportant,” he explained. “Ifthat database is breached, theonly thing saving someone’scredentials is the way they’reprotected in storage. Whatshould have happen is thatthere should be some form ofcryptographic storage—notin plain text.”

Mr Hunt pointed out thatas Tesco was able to emailusers their password in plaintext, this showed the data wasnot being stored crypto-graphically. A more securemethod of password recoveryis for websites to email usersinstructions on how to resettheir password, rather thanrevealing the passworditself.Security expert GrahamCluley echoed Mr Hunt’sconcerns. “It does appear asthough Tesco didn’t reallyfollow industry best practicewith their site. That’s not tosay that people’s detail are at

risk or that they’re in danger ofbeing hacked —but it’ssurprising to see how Tescohas designed its site withregards to how it stores itspasswords.”

Mr Hunt also criticisedTesco for not using HTTPS —Hypertext Transfer ProtocolSecure — across its entire site.He said this left userssusceptible to phishingattacks or even the interceptionof data — particularly whenusing shared wi-fi networks. The Information Com-missioners Office (ICO)confirmed to the BBC that itwas making enquiries intoTesco regarding thecomplaints, but would notcomment further until moreinformation had beengathered.

Mr Cluley said Tesco wasby no means the only majorwebsite to have “out of date”storage methods, but said thesupermarket should move toreassure online shoppers thatthe matter is being takenseriously. “They need to do afull review of their websitesecurity and make sure they’refollowing good industrypractice,” he told the BBC.“With the number of websitesthey have, that isn’t going tobe a small task. But it issomething that they’ll want toaddress and reassure peoplethey’ve got it sorted out.”

Obesity ‘bad for brain’ by hastening cognitivedecline

LONDON, 21 Aug—Beingoverweight is not just bad forwaistlines but for brains too,say researchers who havelinked obesity to decliningmental performance. Expertsare not sure why this might be,but say metabolic changessuch as high blood sugar andraised cholesterol are likely tobe involved.Obesity hasalready been tipped as a riskfactor for dementia.

The work, published inNeurology, tracked the healthof more than 6,000 Britishpeople over a decade. Theparticipants, who were agedbetween 35 and 55, took testson memory and other cognitiveskills three times over a 10-yearperiod. People who were bothobese and who had unhealthy

metabolic changes showed amuch faster decline on theircognitive test scorescompared to others in thestudy.

The experts stress thatthey only looked at cognitivefunction, not dementia. Theboundary between normalageing, mild cognitiveimpairment and dementia isblurred — not all impairmentleads to dementia. All of thestudy participants came fromone group of civil serviceworkers, which may mean thefindings may not apply moregenerally to other populations. They said: “More research isneeded to look at the effects ofgenetic factors and also totake into account how longpeople have been obese and

how long they have had thesemetabolic risk factors and alsoto look at cognitive test scoresspanning adulthood to giveus a better understanding ofthe link between obesity andcognitive function, such asthinking, reasoning andmemory.”

Shirley Cramer of theAlzheimer’s Research UKsaid: “We do not yet knowwhy obesity and metabolicabnormality are linked topoorer brain performance, butwith obesity levels on the rise,it will be important to delve alittle deeper into thisassociation.” While the studyitself focuses on cognitivedecline, previous researchsuggests that a healthy diet, regular exercise, not smokingand controlling blood pressureand cholesterol in midlife canalso help stave off dementia. With dementia figuresspiralling towards a million, the findings suggest “weshould be conscious of ourgeneral health throughoutlife.”

While the merger isexpected to have a positiveimpact, analysts said thefirms were likely to facechallenges. The two firmshave been fierce rivals foryears and have even takeneach other to court. “One ofthe biggest issue is going tobe integration of theirbusinesses,” Josh Ong,China editor of The Next Webtold the BBC.

Cod and Haddock demand ‘exceeds UK sea supply’LONDON, 21 Aug — The

UK would have run out of fishfor the year by now if it reliedon stocks from its own waters,a report suggests. Annualdomestic fish stocks cansatisfy demand for about 233days a year, think tank theNew Economics Foundationsaid. This leaves the UK relianton imported fish, such ashaddock and cod, with at leastone in three fish consumed inthe UK imported from outsidethe EU.The NEF said demandcould be met with bettermanaged seas. Ministers citedthe UK’s call for sustainablefishing.

The UK imports morethan 101,000 tonnes of cod, worth £372m, and 60,000tonnes of haddock, worth£156m, in a year, the majorityof which comes from outsidethe EU, according to figuresfrom 2010.It is reliant oncountries such as Iceland,Norway and China for a largeshare of traditional British fish, the 2012 Fish Dependence

report said. The situation hasimproved since last year, whenthe UK effectively ran out offish more than a month earlierthan in 2012, but is largelyunchanged over the pastdecade. The report says UKfish stocks would run out on21 August but points out thatSpain, France, Germany andItaly all used up their ownsupplies earlier in the year.

Rupert Crilly, of the NEF,said the UK had access toproductive fishing groundsand had moderate levels ofconsumption compared to

some other Europeancountries, such as Spain andPortugal. “It could produce asmuch as it needs but instead itis a net importer of fish,” hesaid. “Consumers understandthat we import tuna which isvirtually non-existent in itswaters; but they will wonderwhy we need to import codand haddock from China whenour cod and haddock stockscould deliver five and threetimes more catches with bettermanagement,” he said.

Elsewhere in Europe thesituation is more acute, with

EU consumption of fishoutstripping eastern andcentral Europe’s annual fishsupplies by 6 July.Campaigners are calling forambitious reform of the EU’sCommon Fisheries Policy, which governs the fishingactivities of the EU fleet, toensure fisheries are moresustainably managed toprevent overfishing. They arealso calling for the EU topromote responsibleconsumption by EUconsumers and to make surefishing outside the bloc’swaters is done moreresponsibly.

Ian Campbell, UK co-ordinator for Ocean2012, acoalition of organizations, said: “Fishing withinsustainable levels andadapting fish consumption toavailable resources is the onlyway to regain healthy fishinggrounds.”A spokeswoman forthe Department of theEnvironment, Food and RuralAffairs said: — Internet

Low water strands 97 vesselson Mississippi River

GREENVILLE, 21 Aug—The US Coast Guard said onMonday that 97 vessels werestranded by low water on theMississippi River nearGreenville, Mississippi, afterit closed an 11-mile stretch ofthe drought-parchedwaterway for dredging and toreplace missing navigationbuoys. The worst USdrought in 56 years has leftthe river there at its lowestpoint since 1988, a year whena similarly dire drought alsostalled commercial traffic onthe major shipping waterway.

Further north, dredgingoperations near St Louis werehalting river traffic for 12hours at a time as the USArmy Corps of Engineersworked to keep a shippinglane wide enough and deepenough for commercial bargetows hauling everything fromgrain and fertilizer to steel andcoal, industry sources said.

Shippers have been toldfor weeks to limit the amount

of cargo loaded onto bargesby at least 30 percent so thatthey sit higher on the water, and to limit the number ofbarges in tows, but numerousvessels have still run agroundup and down the river.

At least three vessels, allwith lighter-loaded cargo, ranaground in recent daysbetween Caruthersville,Missouri, and Memphis,Tennessee, the Coast Guardsaid. The various rivershipping restrictions havereduced the flow of goods toand from Gulf export terminalsand driven up the cost ofshipping as cargo volumeshave declined but fuel andlabor costs have not.

Some shipping lines haveidled a portion of their bargefleets due to the currentlyunprofitable freight rates.

Despite of all-out efforts of the government, pressuresof internal organizations and exaggeration of media led todeterioration of peace and stability. To exhibit transparencyand ensure international cooperation in the handling of theincidents, the government invited Special Rapporteur on thesituation of human righst in Myanmar Mr Thomas Ojea Quintanaand foreign diplomats and held a press conference in Yangon

on 30-7-2012. And it has made arrangements for Mr Quintanaand foreign diplomats to witness the prevailing situations ofRakhine State. Moreover, delegation members from Turkeyand Republic of Indonesia visited Sittway and MaungtawTownships and submitted the government’s right endeavoursto the United Nations.

The newly-formed commission is a free and independentone. The commission is urged to collect data in the communityand give suggestions on requirements for development. In sodoing, it needs to hold the views on current and root cause, nationalistic and international views, human rights, nationalraces rights, citizens rights, national interest, long-termdevelopment, the emergence of harmonious community. Thecommission might face challenges and difficulties in performingits duties. He strongly believed that the commission couldperform its duties by means of sympathy, coordination andcooperation.

After that, Chairman of Investigation Commission DrMyo Myint said that in handling the Rakhine State issue, it isvery important not to take side. There would be difficulties ineasing their sufferings as both sides have attachments. Thecommission would make attempt to accomplish the tasksduring the designated period. And the commission wouldmake strenuous effort to achieve it as a national duty for State’sinterest and Myanmar’s dignity in the international arena.

After that, each members of the InvestigationCommission presented their views, attitudes and suggestions.Solving the Rakhine issue needs to look at the historicalbackground so as to expose the root cause of the incident. Itneeds to create a new harmonious community out of thehistory. Works should be focused on the future after relyingon the present condition and reviewing the past. Rakhine Stateis important for Geo-politics and Geo-Economy. Rakhine issueis the issue not only of Rakhine State but also of whole country. The commission members would attempt to accomplish theirduties. The State is urged to extend a helping hand for smoothoperations.

In conclusion speech, the Union Minister said that hewould like express thank to the members of the InvestigationCommission for their suggestions. The Commission was a freeand independent one formed by the President. In exposing thereal cause of the incident, they were to present reports on realconditions on the ground and people’s desires after makinginterviews with the local people. It needs to put a specialemphasis on national interest rather than those of organizationsand individuals. In so doing, it needs to make effort foremergence of a humane community in the future without beingregardless of history. The State will fulfill the commission’srequirements as much as possible. It needs to carry out thedifferences in unity as the commission members are from allwalks of life.

After the meeting, the Union Minister cordially greetedthe commission members.—MNA

Used car sales increase inSpain amid economic crisis

MADRID, 21 Aug—Used car sales in Spain havesignificantly increased due to the economic crisis that Spainis suffering, local media reported on Monday.

Used cars sales, whose price dropped by 3.1 percent inthe first seven months of the year, increased from July 2011to July 2012 by 22.7 percent.

In Spain, 70 percent of car purchases are second-hand,60 percent of which have been pre-owned for more than tenyears. This has put a potential threat to the environment androad safety.

On the other hand, a rise in the Value Added Tax will alsoaffect the sector.

In the case of cars, the Value Added Tax will rise from 18to 21 percent from 1 September, which means the industry willsee less sales in new cars.

In 2007, before the crisis began in Spain the sector sold1.6 million new cars. However in 2012, sales in new cars wereexpected to fall below 700,000.

Nearly half of US doctors struggle with burnout: studyNEW YORK, 21 Aug—Job burnout strikes doctors more

often than it does other employed people in the United States, according to a national survey that included more than 7,000doctors.

More than four in 10 US physicians said they wereemotionally exhausted or felt a high degree of cynicism, or“depersonalization,” toward their patients, said researcherswhose findings appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

“The high rate of burnout has consequences not only forthe individual physicians, but also for the patients they arecaring for,” said Tait Shanafelt of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,Minnesota, who led the research.

Previous studies have shown that burned-out doctorsare more prone to thinking about suicide and to makingmedical errors than their peers, Shanafelt added.

The survey included nearly 7,300 doctors who filled inquestionnaires about their work-life balance in 2011.

Thirty-eight percent had high emotional exhaustionscores, which is akin to losing enthusiasm for their job, according to Shanafelt. Thirty percent had highdepersonalization scores, which translates into viewingpatients more like objects than human beings, and 46 percent

had at least one of the two symptoms.Burnout was most common among doctors at the

“frontline of care,” such as those working in emergency roomsor in family medicine. Dermatologists and preventive carespecialists were less affected.

The researchers compared physicians with a randomsample of 3,400 employed people who were not doctors.Based on a modified version of the original questionnaire, 38percent of the doctors had burnout symptoms against 28percent of the rest.—Reuters

The automaker, chastened for cheapeningthe Civic compact earlier thisyear, says that won’t happenwith the midsize Accord.

It better not. The sedanis up against the toughestcompetition it’s ever seen.

It faces a new NissanAltima that leads midsizesedans in highway fueleconomy at 38 miles pergallon, and a revampedToyota Camry that hascemented its place as thebest-selling car in America. The stylish Hyundai Sonata, the redesigned and lower-priced Volkswagen Passat, and a new, more efficientChevrolet Malibu also are

Skull pushes back clock on early humanmigration

An ancient skulldiscovered in a cave in Laoshas pushed back the clock onhuman migration toSoutheast Asia by as muchas 20,000 years, a study hasfound. The skull discoveredin the Annamite Mountainsin northern Laos is the oldestmodern human fossil foundin Southeast Asia and isbelieved to be between 46,000and 63,000 years old.

The find also reveals thatearly humans did not simplyfollow the Asian coast as theymigrated from Africa toAustralia, as someresearchers have argued, butthat some also moved inlandinto unfamiliar terrain.

and Southeast Asia occurredat a relatively rapid rate, andthat, once there, modernhumans weren’t limited toenvironments that they hadpreviously experienced,” saidco-author Laura Shackelford,an anthropologist with theUniversity of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign.

While some humanremains of about that age havebeen found in China andelsewhere in Southeast Asia, none have shown definitivelymodern human features orbeen as well dated as the Laosskull. The discovery alsoreinforces genetic studieswhich indicate modernhumans were living in theregion at least 60,000 yearsago. “Given its age, fossils inthis vicinity could be direct

ancestors of the first migrantsto Australia,” Shackelfordsaid in a Press release.

“But it is also likely thatmainland Southeast Asia wasa crossroads leading tomultiple migratory paths.”

Since no other artifactswere found in the cave, researchers believe it was nota dwelling or burial site. Sincethe soil it was found in wasdated at between 46,000 and51,000 years ago researchersbelieve the body was washedinto the cave after the persondied nearby.

The skull wasdiscovered more than twometers (8.2 feet) below thesurface of the cave in 2009. Ateam of researchers usedmultiple methods todetermine its age.
