However, her involvement in the ostomy world did not rest with a local chapter as Di became a director and subsequently conference chair for the United Ostomy Association, (UOA) in the United States. At the time, Canadian chapters were affiliated with this organization. In 1997, the United Ostomy Association of Canada (UOAC) separated from UOA. Di accepted the position of President following the untimely death of Maria Segal, who had been elected Pres- ident of UOAC following the separation. Once her term was completed, Di went on to become President of the International Osto- my Association and a great advocate of persons with an ostomy throughout the world and especially supporting the work of Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada (FOWC). Her most recent position in FOWC was as its International Liaison. Never one to remain idle, in October 2019, Di accepted the position of Secretary for the North and Central America and Caribbean Ostomy Association (NCACOA) of which Ostomy Canada Society is a member. President’s Report On May 29, 2020 at the Wound Ostomy and Continence – Education Program (WOC-EP) Virtual Graduation and Award Ceremony, it gave me great pleasure, to recognise Karen Campbell, RN, PhD, NSWOC as the recipient of the Ostomy Canada WOC-EP Nurses Award for 2019-2020. Karen is currently working with a chain of Long Term Care Nursing Homes to promote and implement the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario’s Best Practice Guideline, Supporting Adults Who Anticipate or Live with an Ostomy. This education program will ensure that persons living with an ostomy, as they age, will be treated with dignity and compassion in long term care settings. This report for Ostomy Canada Connects will be my last one as President of Ostomy Canada Society. After much consideration, I have made the decision to resign as of August 15, 2020. My five years as President have been challenging, enriching and a great opportunity to work for all of you who are living with an ostomy. Thank you for volunteering to support your members and those seeking support in your local community. Together we have created a great organization to be “Canada’s voice for people living with an ostomy”. My best wishes for an enjoyable and relaxing summer! Ann Ivol, President

GOVERNOR GENERAL AWARDS TWO MEMBERS

Canada Day was a more than just a holiday for two women who have dedicated much of their volunteer service to Ostomy Canada and its work.

It was a day to be recognized by Governor General Julie Payette who announced Lisa Gausman and Pat Cimmeck of Calgary as recipients of the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. They were among 123 Canadians honored in various categories for their skills, courage or dedication to service.

Lisa Gausman was named for her efforts over the past 15 years to help ensure Canadian youth with ostomies experience (summer) camp in a safe and accepting environment. In addition, members of Ostomy Canada know Lisa as long-time editor of Ostomy Canada magazine.

Pat Cimmeck received her honor for making a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of children with ostomies for more than 25 years. She was director of Ostomy Camp for those 25 years, as well as serving terms as president of Ostomy Canada, in executive positions on international Ostomy bodies, and receiving several national Ostomy Canada awards.

EDITOR’S MESSAGE

Here we are again!

Three months later!

Three more months into the coronavirus COVID 19 pandemic that appears it may NEVER end – or at least until a vaccine is discov-ered that can stem the tide.

Thank goodness we live in Canada, eh? Where our health leaders and political nabobs have generally used common sense since this whole thing started – and where our citizens have accepted much of the dictates from those men and women who are guiding us through this.

Compared to the person at the top of the food chain in the US of A., whose name I cannot mention without gagging, who said to Fox Business on July 1, “I think we’re going to be very good with the coronavirus. I think that at some point that’s going to sort of just disappear, I hope.”

Wise words. From the man who said, “If we have fewer tests, we’ll have fewer cases.”

Yeh, sure (sarcasm intended).

With better forethought than that, it seems Canadians living with ostomies are mostly getting by well. I know I am, and I hope you are, too.

Sure there are glitches.

No Ostomy Camp in 2020. That doesn’t mean we’ve given up on camp activities as camp leaders have arranged ZOOM meetings to keep campers connected and inspired\, and eagerly anticipating a resumption of REAL activities in 2021.

A virtual Stoma Stroll will be held in 2020, rather than getting out there and, collectively, walking or jogging or ambling to create awareness of ostomies and funding for Ostomy Canada.

But a virtual Stroll on October 3, 2020 doesn’t mean we can’t exercise for our own welfare, and that of the national organization. We can be active individually, or in small groups as long as we are socially distant. We can still show that ostomies aren’t going to slow us down and we can live a full and satisfying life.

We’re fortunate that we are in Canada.

Ostomy supplies are readily available.

Support groups and individuals can be accessed easily via many electronic methods, including Alexander Graham Bell’s invention (the telephone, for you who are struggling to recall, or too young to know what a telephone is – it’s a forerunner to the cellular con-nection).

Ostomy Canada’s web site (thank you, Peter Folk) is a gem and has almost any answer you need.

We have dedicated leadership- and thank you, Ann Ivol, retiring as president, after five years of loyally guiding Ostomy Canada Society through interesting debates and sage decision-making.

We have new and enthusiastic people moving into national positions to lead us through the next decade (hopefully Coronavirus-free). And there are spots for those who want to assume those roles, too.

At some point we’ll get back to normal, or to a new normal.

We have to be vigilant. We have to self-isolate when necessary. We have to social distance. We have to wear masks in public indoor places. We have to stay safe.

And we have to live a full life, as best we can.

As people living with ostomies, that’s what we do every day.

Jokes of the Day

Surgeon Talk...

Five surgeons were talking about the best patients...

First surgeon says, "Accountants are the best to operate on because when you open them up, everything on the inside is numbered."

Second surgeon says, "Nah - librarians are the best. Everything inside them is in alphabetical order."

Third surgeon responds, "Try electri-cians, man! Everything inside them is color coded!"

To which the fourth surgeon, who has been quietly listening to the conversa-tion, says, "I like engineers. They al-ways understand when you have a few parts left over at the end."

Review of Mandate for the Terms of Affiliation Working Group

The current terms of affiliation for most of the chapters were approved in 1997 at the time of separation from UOA. Few of these conditions are still relevant or enforced.

The chapters recognized that they need a national body to perform those aspects of the mission that require collective action. The national body recognized that it needs the chapters to execute the mission in communities across Canada.

The relationship between the national body and the chapters changed dramatically at AGM 2019 when the chapters transferred the responsibility to govern to the Board of Directors of Ostomy Canada. The purpose of this analysis was to determine the nature of the new relationship between Ostomy Canada and the local community-based ostomy support groups under the new governance structure.

Conclusion

The working group was unanimous in its support for Option 1 - Unification Reduces Bureaucratic Overhead.

Consolidate (merge) the participating local Boards into a single national Board. All currently affiliated chapters would be eligible to apply. All current ostomy support group members would be automatically registered as Ostomy Supporters.

It will require negotiating a unification agreement with the participating chapters.

Recommendation

The working group was very aware that the current President would be retiring at AGM 2020 and that the Vice-President position has been vacant since 2015. As of the date of submission of this report, there have been no nominations for either position. Recognizing the requirement for strong and committed leadership during the transition phase, the working group proposed the following recommendation:

Recommended that the Ostomy Canada Board of Directors be tasked to recruit an Executive Director with appropriate

non-profit experience to negotiate unification agreements with the Boards of the affiliated independent ostomy support

groups.

PRAIRIE REGION UPDATE

July 2020

As I sit, reviewing the past few months, hoping to write a great update from the Prairies, my mind wanders a bit. It’s easy to forget that just one year ago we were all going about our business, holding meetings, planning vacations, enjoying the weather and spending time with friends and family. We were hugging and kissing and shaking hands. I suspect we are torn between wanting the freedom to re-engage and on the other side to be cautious and careful. The last few months have become our current and often uncomfortable reality, leaving us all wondering when things will get back to “normal”, albeit a new normal, asking what that will look like.

The Chapters in the prairies have been quiet, meetings and activities have been cancelled or postponed. If there is any new ostomate visiting taking place it is by telephone only. Our newsletters keep coming out, which we all hope is a welcome reprieve.

Although the virus seems to have settled down in the Prairies to a large degree with regard to infections, we need to be diligent in our practices and activities as it could easily change. Let’s not forget those friends, family and members who live on their own and would welcome a note or a call. We still have friends, family and members working on the front lines of this pandemic, working in care homes or hospitals.

Enjoy your summer and we’ll have some catching up to do in the fall.

Stay safe, wash those hands, don’t touch your face and above all let’s have hope for a better tomorrow.

Atlantic Regional Chapters and Ostomy Peer Support Groups

We have all heard the common saying “Burst My Bubble”, well in the past several months all our bubbles have been burst in one way or another due to Covid-19. Many of our families and friends have had difficulties with isolation, sickness, shopping, worship-ping and everyday living. And most of all it has been lonely. We have been forced to lead different lives, forced to depend on others and we constantly force ourselves to be safe. Our bubble has been small, and we all look to the future for new regulations in “Opening up our Bubble.” Our Ostomy Programs have been limited to Facebook, Zoom and Virtual Events and we all can’t wait to be able to attend our ostomy meetings, visit patients who have had new surgeries and have a coffee with our ostomy friends. When regulations change, I encourage each of you to step up to the plate and start sharing your time with your ostomy membership.

Grand Falls, NL. Moncton, NB, Charlottetown, PEI, and Claire, NS have started to make plans for their educational events and with the Atlantic Provinces beginning to share the same Bubble after July 3rd we are in hopes that these events will take place.

Ostomy Canada’s Visitors Program Committee have mailed to each Group in Canada the new revised manual for the Visitors Pro-gram. We have asked that your Visiting Coordinator send to the National Office a list of your visitors by using the form in the manu-al. Our national office is updating the visitors list so we can communicate with your Group and your Visitors.

I want to congratulate all of you who have made the effort to hold gatherings via zoom. It is a new world for all, but I can tell you a few of you have done a great job.

Once again, please encourage your members to apply for the Disability Tax Credit as well as the Grant that Walmart Canada has to offer to your group. The application is done online. The grants are valued at $1000.00. I encourage you as members of Ostomy Can-ada to get involved, there are many committees to sit on and if you want information or are interested please contact me. Your inter-est and participation will form the future of our Society.

And finally, I want to pass on our Atlantic appreciation to Lisa Gausman for doing such a great job on our magazine. This past edi-tion was just the BEST and we thank you.

Kind regards and Stay Safe,

National Advisory Council (NAC)

The first working meeting of the National Advisory Council (NAC) was held on Feb 3, 2020 in conjunction with the budget planning process. Items discussed: acknowledgement and appreciation to donors along with notification to the families of such donations; marketing and promotion of the Ostomy Youth Camp. Three participants, Bob Daley (Halifax), Sally Martens (Vancouver) and Randy Hull (Winnipeg) volunteered to represent the affiliated chapters on the Terms of Affiliation Committee which is examining the new relationships between the national body and affiliated chapters. These are three of our biggest and most active chapters. The committee held four meetings by electronic means. At the last meeting on May 25, they unanimously supported negotiating a unification agreement with Ostomy Canada to replace the current outdated affiliation agreements. Their report will be the main item on the agenda for the upcoming NAC meeting.

Already we have 21 volunteers: Ed Tummers and Deb Carpentier are co-chairs. Representing various stakeholders are (in alphabetical order): Pat Cimmeck, Diane Cutcliffe, Bob Daley, Corry Stewart Dorosh, Ann Durkee, Jim Fitzgerald, Peter Folk, Lisa Gausman, Andreanne Gousse, Randy Hull, Andrea Leard, Sally Martens, Debra Rooney, Jude Ruest, Nancy Schuttenbeld, Tiffany Shorson, Kevin Taziar, Carol Wells.

All affiliated chapters are invited to nominate representatives to the NAC so that your voice can contribute to the negotiation process for the unification agreement.

The next meeting will be held by electronic means on August 8, 2020. Let your voice be heard.

Virtual Stoma Stroll

Hello Everyone, We hope that you and your family are keeping well during these times. Like many organizations, Ostomy Canada Society has been struggling with the challenges presented by COVID-19. However, we remain committed to our mission “… dedicated to all people with an ostomy and their families, helping them to live life to the fullest, through support, education, collaboration and advocacy.” It is clear that we will be unable to hold our main fundraising, Stoma Stroll Awareness Walk this year as originally planned. Along with change comes an opportunity! Ostomy Canada Society is using this opportunity to present a virtual walk and, in addition, people with ostomies are encouraged to submit pictures of themselves living life to the fullest. These inspiring pictures will be compiled into a video which will premiere on Ostomy Canada Day October 3 on the Stoma Stroll website: www.stomastroll.ca (please see previous page for more information). This is your invitation to support Ostomy Canada Society by viewing this inspiring video and making a donation on www.stomastroll.ca. We thank you for your support of Ostomy Canada Society and, most importantly, your support of people living with an ostomy across Canada. Keep well, Stoma Stroll Committee

Ostomy Canada Society Governance Update
