Recently our VCE students were treated to the experience of a lifetime We were honoured to have the opportunity to hear President Rivlin the highest representative of the Jewish State address us as part of his state visit to Australia

President Rivlin was born in Jerusalem and is part of the extended Rivlin family which has lived in Jerusalem since 1809 Rivlin was first elected to the Knesset in 1988 and has served on a wide range of Knesset committees Reuven Rivlin was elected by the Knesset to serve as Israelrsquos 10th president in 2014 and this was his first visit to Australia in his capacity as president

Before we left Yavneh our students were addressed by Hona Dodge as he explained the role and significance of the President of Israel As the students boarded the buses heading to Mount Scopus their excitement was palpable as they recognised the magnitude of the event they were lucky enough to attend

When the students entered the hall and took their seats they were surrounded by hundreds of students from other Jewish day schools The atmosphere in the hall was electric as we waited for the President to make his entrance

College Principal Ms Skewes and the College Captains waited outside the hall with the principals and captains of all the other schools to welcome President Rivlin

As he entered the hall to loud music and cheering it was clear to all how happy President Rivlin was to see so many of our youth passionate about their Zionism and their love for Israel

Each school had a representative to welcome the president and College Captain Gabe Max did a terrific job on behalf of Yavneh He talked about the strong bond Australia has with Israel and how we have one of the highest rates per capita of Olim who ldquopassionately defend and contribute to our homelandrdquo

He talked about the youth and Israel saying ldquoThis love and appreciation for Israel is imbued in us from a very young age through the incredible network of Jewish schools working in conjunction with Zionist youth movements Our youth are ardent Zionists with pride for Israel and all its achievements burning strong in our hearts The opportunity to hear you speak this morning is an honour we will remember throughout our lives ldquo

President Rivlin then addressed us and introduced his new campaign against bullying and social exclusion among children that was launched in Israel last week titled ldquoDonrsquot Stand Byrdquo and recognised that fact that Australian students also suffer from bullying The President then said ldquoBullying is violence It is a terrible experience No kid should face social exclusion and hurtful comments Unfortunately social media just seems to provide more opportunities for that When we saw in Israel how terrible bullying in schools is I knew that as a president I must not stand by Our message is simple -donrsquot stand by if others are having a hard time Donrsquot stand byrdquo

This was such a powerful message to give to students today and echoes Yavnehrsquos theme of the year ldquoHishtadlutrdquo which means to step up when we see injustice

You shall make holy garments for Aharon your brother for honour and glory (Shemot 282)

People appointed by the public such as government officials have always worn uniforms The uniform indicates that the one wearing it holds an office and is endowed with authority Even an absolute monarch wears a uniform to distinguish himself from the ordinary citizen Leadership and distinction express themselves in distinctive garments the dignity of the leader is communicated through his dress

Dignity unlike any other capability must be implanted into a person If dignity is not part of his educational process he will never possess it dignity does not come on its own In a king or ruler personal capabilities or the lack of them often go unnoticed However lack of dignity is noticed and a ruler that exhibits this is punished by the people Clothing is an expression not of the intellect but of the dignity of the human being and uniforms imply that those donning them are specially selected by the people and are given certain privileges that others do not receive

There is a particular aspect of humility that should be apparent people in positions of power Ones authority comes not from within but from without G-d wanted the Kohen Gadol to realize that he was undeserving of his position When he wore his uniform the Kohen Gadol recognized that he filled his role not due to his own meritsmdashwhich were insufficient for anyone to assume such a high office The same was true of the king without the donning of the royal garments he would not have the authority to act as king

Moshe on the other hand required no special vestments in his position of leadership His greatness was earned and not bestowed Not so is My servant Moses he is faithful throughout My house (Num 137)

The President then concluded with this thought ldquoWhen I see you I am filled with optimism Optimism about the future of the Australia-Israel relationship and about the future of the deep bond between the Jewish People and the Jewish state Thank you again for all that you do I look forward to seeing you soon in Jerusalem our eternal capitalrdquo

Our students returned to school with a renewed appreciation of their Jewish identity and pride for the State of Israel inspired by Jewish unity We were proud of the way the students conducted themselves and they were worthy representatives of Leibler Yavneh College

The Megilla contains the story of events that occurred in the twilight hour of Jewish history At that time the covenantal community was losing slowly but surely the most precious of all gifts prophecy hellip Where is there an allusion to Esther in the Torah asks the Talmud (Bavli Chullin 139b) The answer is given immediately And I shall hide My countenance on that day (Deut 3118) What did the (הסתר אסתיר)Talmud mean to express by this question and answer hellip

Where in the Torah is there an allusion to the silent mute confrontation between mighty historical events and the Jew in the Diaspora between a wicked cruel monster and a lonely Jewish maiden on whose frail shoulders Providence placed the heavy load of historical responsibility How can the Jew triumph over his adversaries and enemies if G-d has stopped speaking to him if the cryptic messages he receives remain unintelligible and incomprehensible The answer to this question is more a statement of facts than an explanation

Even during the non-prophetic era at a time when the divine countenance is hidden (הסתר פנים) man is elected by G-d to carry on to make decisions to undertake difficult tasks courageously and implement them superbly Of course it is a superhuman task for a young inexperienced maiden However the spirit of G-d will descend on her and inspire her to defy danger and to make the right decisions G-d asks of man to reach maturity and independence He wills man to act with courage and wisdom allegedly as his own master This song shall answer (Deut 3121) the song of the Torah will never be terminated All communities prophetic and non-prophetic will join in

PURIM SAMEACH FROM SKB17 FEBRUARY ndash 6 MARCH

Our Purim Program is in full swing and we have all been very busy with our activities We have been using puppets visuals and costumes to retell the Story of Megillat Esther The children are enjoying the opportunity to dress up and physically get involved by pretending to be the characters of the Megillah like Vashti King Ahashverosh Queen Esther Mordechai and Haman We are also learning about the four mitzvot that we are obligated to perform on Purim The children have become familiar with these mitzvot through games and discussions We have decorated a cup for Mishloach Manot goodies to give to our classmates

The children are so enthusiastic and many are singing Purim songs that they have learnt throughout the day You can even hear them outside There is a real happy ldquoPurimrdquo feeling in SKB The children have collaborated in creating beautiful decorations for our room to add to the festive vibe We wish you could have enjoyed the smell of our baking Oznei Haman We have made masks and rarsquoashanim to share the joy and colour of Purim with families at home We hope you enjoy these photos

KOALAS ABOUND

YEAR 4 JS KESHER REPORT

To connect with Jewish Lifersquos Koala Campaign we created painted koalas A three-part project we started with directed drawing to draw the outline in oil pastel developing shape placement and use of space Then we painted focusing on use of brush strokes and double loading the brush to create texture and colour mix They were amazed how colours blended right there on the paper Lastly we went back to oil pastels to add texture using light strokes to draw fur

Whilst all children received the same instructions it is impressive to see how each child put their own personal style to the project Please enjoy this small sample

It has been a very busy start to the year for Year 4 in Jewish Studies With TuBishvat learning and activities as well as Chumash Parsha Israel Studies and Adar and Purim learning and activities during it all we have been having a lot of fun

TuBishvat found us learning about tree facts as well as our own family tree We also connected it to the Hishtadlut school wide project on how to develop our self-growth and step up to becoming a Mentch

Chumash found us in Parshat Chayei Sara and we delved into many Rashis one of which explaining why the Parsha is called the Life of Sara when in fact she passes away in Pasuk Bet We looked at real pictures of Maarat HaMachpeila and learnt why it got that name

In Israel Studies we learnt what a siege is and how in the War of Independence Yerushalayim was surrounded by enemies causing the Jews to make adjustments to their way of living

To connect with Jewish Lifersquos Koala Campaign we created painted koalas A three-part project we started with directed drawing to draw the outline in oil pastel developing shape placement and use of space Then we painted focusing on use of brush strokes and double loading the brush to create texture and colour mix They were amazed how colours blended right there on the paper Lastly we went back to oil pastels to add texture using light strokes to draw fur

Whilst all children received the same instructions it is impressive to see how each child put their own personal style to the project Please enjoy this small sample

TuBishvat found us learning about tree facts as well as our own family tree We also connected it to the Hishtadlut school wide project on how to develop our self-growth and step up to becoming a Mentch

Chumash found us in Parshat Chayei Sara and we delved into many Rashis one of which explaining why the Parsha is called the Life of Sara when in fact she passes away in Pasuk Bet We looked at real pictures of Maarat HaMachpeila and learnt why it got that name

In Israel Studies we learnt what a siege is and how in the War of Independence Yerushalayim was surrounded by enemies causing the Jews to make adjustments to their way of living

INGREDIENTS

420 grams flour (3 cups)

100 grams sugar (12 cup)

200 grams butter

1 Tbsp baking powder

2 egg yolks

2 Tbsp lemon juice

2 Tbsp sour cream orange juice

FILLINGS

Poppy seed filling

Parve chocolate spread of choice

Date spread

Dates and nuts

Any filling you like

PREPARATION

1 We recommend reading this before you start Cut the butter into small cubes and transfer to the bowl of a mixer Add the other ingredients and mix on relatively low speed until you get a coarse crumb consistency Stop the mixer and gather the dough into a ball

2 Divide the dough in two Wrap one part in cling film and refrigerate Roll out the other half and cut 8 cm circles with a cookie cutter or glass Place 12 tsp of whatever filling you like in the centre of each circle and close into a triangle Repeat with the second half of the dough

3 Preheat an oven to 180degC

4 Arrange the Oznei Haman on a baking tray lined with parchment paper Bake for around 15 minutes or until the edges turn golden

5 Just before serving sprinkle with icing sugar amp enjoy

Hello all Yavnehrians Itrsquos been a while since my last lsquoMr Drsquos Deskrsquo article and I promise that Ill get back to writing an article a week which is all about footy and movies Go Pies

This weekrsquos article though comes from a very special place at Yavneh which is the Secondary Arts Department

For many years now I have seen the Yavneh Art Department grow and I must say since 2008 the advancements in not only technology but the willingness to be creative and step out of comfort zones has increased in the Arts at Yavneh

Firstly I would like to congratulate the fantastic music component of Yavneh Arts Department Katie Weston and her team who have been tirelessly working on the epic Yavneh musical of ldquoMatildardquo

I would also like to welcome our new Year 7 amp 8 Music teacher Shani Weiss Shani brings a wealth of experience to the role and is already inspiring some of our students to reach for the stars and create the next music hit

A growing body of studies presents compelling evidence connecting student learning in the arts to a wide array of academic and social benefits For example exposure to art education promotes self-directed learning improves school attendance and sharpens critical and creative skills

Letrsquos not also forget the other factors and benefits of an Arts education which are listed here but not limited to creativity motor skills confidence decision making perseverance focus collaboration and accountability

These factors are evident when not only taking on a VCE subject which stems from the Arts but also in the younger year levels where students at Yavneh have the opportunity to discover different and interesting ways of expressing themselves not only on a canvas but as a performer in a musical band group or solo drama performance through creating films and photography or even designing a house or product

The talent and dedication in the Yavneh Arts department is evident not only in the students but the amazing group of teachers who show the community every year that the Yavneh Arts department is a small yet powerful group of individuals

I am also proud to showcase some of the great photography taken by our talented Year 8 and Year 10 TMA class As I say in class ldquoReal Photography isnrsquot taken with a cell phonerdquo and also some behind the scenes photos of the Yavneh musical ldquoMatildardquo

As the Year 10 Head of Year I would like to extend a warm welcome to our 2020 Year 10 families It has been an exciting start in the Year 10 Wellbeing space Working in conjunction with Yavnehrsquos overall theme of Hishtadlut we are working specifically on developing ownership over our decision making and intrinsic motivation towards being successful in school and life in general I attended a lecture delivered by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg where he emphasised the message that teachers and parents need to be active participants in helping our students and children find their spark he said emphatically ldquosport art music dance drama Destiny 2 Minecraft ndash I donrsquot really care what it is but I need all of the kids to have it Because the ones that have a spark get interested take risks develop their personality find out who they arerdquo

Our Homeroom sessions that take place Monday through to Thursday along with the longer Wellbeing sessions have been designed with the above in mind and are run by Mrs Rochel Tilson and myself lsquoMotivation Mondayrsquo we present a short motivational idea for the week lsquoNewsday Tuesdayrsquo the students are rostered to present to the class their thoughts insights and reflection on one piece of news from the previous week lsquoWellbeing Wednesdayrsquo we run a session that explores a range of issues such as resilience drugs organisational skills mental health gratefulness mindfulness and many others lsquoThrowback Thursdayrsquo we give it back to the students and roster the students to present on any topic they are passionate about Below you can see Eyal and Jacob presenting on skateboarding as they take the class through the various components of a skateboard It is empowering for the students to present to their peers on topics they are passionate about while simultaneously encouraging the other students to reflect on what sparks them

I look forward to sharing many positive experiences with the Year 10 cohort and watching them grow and flourish over 2020

Building upon the foundations established in the Year 7 lsquoMersquo program which focuses on our personal growth the Year 8 lsquoUsrsquo program looks at in-reach and how we can support and assist those around us before entering

into the Year 9 lsquoYoursquo program which deals with out-reach and turns our inward focus outwards maximising the positive impact of our actions

Last week Year 8 had their first session of lsquoMensch in a crowdrsquo the flagship course for the lsquoUsrsquo program Focusing on accountability and standing up for what is right the first session dealt with the bystander effect in society and looked at parallels with the story of Kayin and Hevel and Moshersquos leadership

Harnessing this message of personal responsibility established in the lsquoUsrsquo program Year 9 simultaneously had their first session of the lsquoYoursquo Community Service program which raises awareness of the importance of community service via exposure to Jewish texts as well as providers within our community Following a limmud led by the Jewish Life team and Tzevet which analysed sources promoting kindness and inclusivity in our treatment of others Flying Fox ran the first of four sessions about disability and inclusion We look forward to the coming weeks where Flying Fox will continue to present and expound upon the foundations established in the limmud

We are so proud of our Year 12 students who together with the Jewish Life team have put together a carnival for all students in Yavneh from Years 1-12 on Purim day The Year 12 students have chosen a theme and will decorate the school to add to Purim festivities They will also perform a dance during the carnival time for the entertainment of the students

This week we gave a session on Purim We talked about how there are two kinds of miracles one kind is a miracle that you see right away like the sea splitting in half in Yetziat Mizraim The other kind is a miracle that you have to look carefully to see Hashemrsquos hand in it like the Megillat Esther story We also baked Hamantaschen with the students and gave it out to some staff members to say thanks for all the hard work We couldnrsquot end the week with a great bet cafeacute

Chris Kunz is a writer editor and publisher who works across the TV film and publishing industries Chris lives in Sydney

In a recent interview founder of Sydney based publisher Ventura Press Jane Curry talked about the design of book covers The role of the design is to define the genre There are accepted norms for each genre that are obvious to anyone browsing the bookshop thrillers have the name of the author in BIG CAPITALS crime covers are bold black and red motivation books are often white with strong topography and biographies feature a full headshot and title based on a wordplay (such as Shane Warnersquos No Spin)

Despite this pattern often the best cover designs donrsquot follow a trend At Ventura before they even start on the cover design they hold a positioning meeting where they decide the readership profile for a book-is it literary commercial or genre

Hello all Yavnehrians Itrsquos been a while since my last lsquoMr Drsquos Deskrsquo article and I promise that Ill get back to writing an article a week which is all about footy and movies Go Pies

This weekrsquos article though comes from a very special place at Yavneh which is the Secondary Arts Department

For many years now I have seen the Yavneh Art Department grow and I must say since 2008 the advancements in not only technology but the willingness to be creative and step out of comfort zones has increased in the Arts at Yavneh

Firstly I would like to congratulate the fantastic music component of Yavneh Arts Department Katie Weston and her team who have been tirelessly working on the epic Yavneh musical of ldquoMatildardquo

I would also like to welcome our new Year 7 amp 8 Music teacher Shani Weiss Shani brings a wealth of experience to the role and is already inspiring some of our students to reach for the stars and create the next music hit

A growing body of studies presents compelling evidence connecting student learning in the arts to a wide array of academic and social benefits For example exposure to art education promotes self-directed learning improves school attendance and sharpens critical and creative skills

Letrsquos not also forget the other factors and benefits of an Arts education which are listed here but not limited to creativity motor skills confidence decision making perseverance focus collaboration and accountability

These factors are evident when not only taking on a VCE subject which stems from the Arts but also in the younger year levels where students at Yavneh have the opportunity to discover different and interesting ways of expressing themselves not only on a canvas but as a performer in a musical band group or solo drama performance through creating films and photography or even designing a house or product

The talent and dedication in the Yavneh Arts department is evident not only in the students but the amazing group of teachers who show the community every year that the Yavneh Arts department is a small yet powerful group of individuals

I am also proud to showcase some of the great photography taken by our talented Year 8 and Year 10 TMA class As I say in class ldquoReal Photography isnrsquot taken with a cell phonerdquo and also some behind the scenes photos of the Yavneh musical ldquoMatildardquo

As the Year 10 Head of Year I would like to extend a warm welcome to our 2020 Year 10 families It has been an exciting start in the Year 10 Wellbeing space Working in conjunction with Yavnehrsquos overall theme of Hishtadlut we are working specifically on developing ownership over our decision making and intrinsic motivation towards being successful in school and life in general I attended a lecture delivered by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg where he emphasised the message that teachers and parents need to be active participants in helping our students and children find their spark he said emphatically ldquosport art music dance drama Destiny 2 Minecraft ndash I donrsquot really care what it is but I need all of the kids to have it Because the ones that have a spark get interested take risks develop their personality find out who they arerdquo

Our Homeroom sessions that take place Monday through to Thursday along with the longer Wellbeing sessions have been designed with the above in mind and are run by Mrs Rochel Tilson and myself lsquoMotivation Mondayrsquo we present a short motivational idea for the week lsquoNewsday Tuesdayrsquo the students are rostered to present to the class their thoughts insights and reflection on one piece of news from the previous week lsquoWellbeing Wednesdayrsquo we run a session that explores a range of issues such as resilience drugs organisational skills mental health gratefulness mindfulness and many others lsquoThrowback Thursdayrsquo we give it back to the students and roster the students to present on any topic they are passionate about Below you can see Eyal and Jacob presenting on skateboarding as they take the class through the various components of a skateboard It is empowering for the students to present to their peers on topics they are passionate about while simultaneously encouraging the other students to reflect on what sparks them

I look forward to sharing many positive experiences with the Year 10 cohort and watching them grow and flourish over 2020

Building upon the foundations established in the Year 7 lsquoMersquo program which focuses on our personal growth the Year 8 lsquoUsrsquo program looks at in-reach and how we can support and assist those around us before entering

into the Year 9 lsquoYoursquo program which deals with out-reach and turns our inward focus outwards maximising the positive impact of our actions

Last week Year 8 had their first session of lsquoMensch in a crowdrsquo the flagship course for the lsquoUsrsquo program Focusing on accountability and standing up for what is right the first session dealt with the bystander effect in society and looked at parallels with the story of Kayin and Hevel and Moshersquos leadership

Harnessing this message of personal responsibility established in the lsquoUsrsquo program Year 9 simultaneously had their first session of the lsquoYoursquo Community Service program which raises awareness of the importance of community service via exposure to Jewish texts as well as providers within our community Following a limmud led by the Jewish Life team and Tzevet which analysed sources promoting kindness and inclusivity in our treatment of others Flying Fox ran the first of four sessions about disability and inclusion We look forward to the coming weeks where Flying Fox will continue to present and expound upon the foundations established in the limmud

WOMENrsquoS MEGILLAH READING YAVNEH

We are so proud of our Year 12 students who together with the Jewish Life team have put together a carnival for all students in Yavneh from Years 1-12 on Purim day The Year 12 students have chosen a theme and will decorate the school to add to Purim festivities They will also perform a dance during the carnival time for the entertainment of the students

This week we gave a session on Purim We talked about how there are two kinds of miracles one kind is a miracle that you see right away like the sea splitting in half in Yetziat Mizraim The other kind is a miracle that you have to look carefully to see Hashemrsquos hand in it like the Megillat Esther story We also baked Hamantaschen with the students and gave it out to some staff members to say thanks for all the hard work We couldnrsquot end the week with a great bet cafeacute

We are delighted to welcome women of the community to a Tefillah and Womenrsquos Megillah Reading on Purim morning at 815am in Hamerkaz Please be aware that space is limited and seating will provided on a first come first served basis There will also be a Minyan and reading of the Megillah in the Shul for men at 815am Women seeking to attend HaMerkaz must enter via the main gate in Nagle Avenue

The Unlisted Book One is by Sydney authors Justine Flynn and Chris Kunz Therersquos nothing Dru Sharma fears more than the dentist So when his school runs a compulsory dental check initiated by an organisation called Infinity Group he convinces his identical twin Kal to take his spot

What Dru and kal donrsquot realise is that Infinity aims to control the hearts minds and bodies of the Worldrsquos youth It isnrsquot long before Kal and the other students start developing super strength while the kids who resisted the procedure start to go missing With Dru lsquoUnlistedrsquo and outside Infinity Grouprsquos control Dru and Kal with the help od underground vigilante teens race against time to uncover the truth of the operation before it is too late

Justine Flynn has worked in film and television for 18 years in roles such as directing acquisitions writing and development Justine lives in Sydneyrsquos inner west with her husband four children two dogs and three goldfish

Chris Kunz is a writer editor and publisher who works across the TV film and publishing industries Chris lives in Sydney

In a recent interview founder of Sydney based publisher Ventura Press Jane Curry talked about the design of book covers The role of the design is to define the genre There are accepted norms for each genre that are obvious to anyone browsing the bookshop thrillers have the name of the author in BIG CAPITALS crime covers are bold black and red motivation books are often white with strong topography and biographies feature a full headshot and title based on a wordplay (such as Shane Warnersquos No Spin)

Despite this pattern often the best cover designs donrsquot follow a trend At Ventura before they even start on the cover design they hold a positioning meeting where they decide the readership profile for a book-is it literary commercial or genre

In a recent interview founder of Sydney based publisher Ventura Press Jane Curry talked about the design of book covers The role of the design is to define the genre There are accepted norms for each genre that are obvious to anyone browsing the bookshop thrillers have the name of the author in BIG CAPITALS crime covers are bold black and red motivation books are often white with strong topography and biographies feature a full headshot and title based on a wordplay (such as Shane Warnersquos No Spin)

Despite this pattern often the best cover designs donrsquot follow a trend At Ventura before they even start on the cover design they hold a positioning meeting where they decide the readership profile for a book-is it literary commercial or genre
