Although I advised that it was possible that we may have to form a 4/5/6 class and move some students, a couple of last minute leavers meant we avoided the disruption. We have 18 classes which means we can maintain our current staffing levels. Staffing for 2011 We were happy that Mrs Helen Fitzgerald was appointed to our office team and were looking forward to working with her. Helen has been able to return to her former position and we wish her all the best and welcome back Mrs Loida Anorga until an appointment can be made. Changes to Student Welfare Procedures Feedback from staff, students and parents last year led us to assess some of our student welfare practices, particularly around planning room. Staff and students were surveyed and results showed that we needed to increase the consistency of teacher response to minor problem behavior in the classroom and playground. As a result, we have redesigned, and are trialling, a school-wide systematic procedure for responding to behavior that does not meet our expectations of Care, Commonsense, Co-operation and Courtesy. The system is called STOP (Systematic Time Out Procedure); it is used school wide by all staff and is being overseen by me. There may be some bugs to iron out but I expect that to happen by the end of term one. Serious misbehavior that may lead to suspension will continue to be addressed under NSW DET policy. Essentially STOP requires teachers to follow the same procedure, using the same language with the same consequences which include time out in class. Continuing problem behavior is escalated to time out in a buddy classroom and then on to school executive to deal with. It uses a reminder/consequence (three strikes and you’re out) response to poor behaviour choices. Continuing or repeated poor behavior will still lead to Level B or Warnings of Suspension. However, consequences will be clearly known in advance. Planning room time has been changed to recess and will be supervised by me for at least the first semester of this year. A system for teacher and student reporting of bullying-type behaviour was also included in the redesign. I have posted information about these new procedures on the website under Caring for Students. These can be accessed after the weekend when I have uploaded the material. Note returns There have been many notes we have asked you to return in the first few days of school, including scripture (special religious education), ethics, authority to publish and others. It helps us considerably that you attend to these as soon as possible so that we can develop timetables and rosters, co-ordinate volunteers and plan other school activities. I do ask teachers to nag children to nag you for their returnsorry. Meet Your Child’s Teacher We sincerely appreciated the effort that many made to attend our breakfast meeting yesterday. It is held in the morning to increase the opportunity for working parents (particularly dads) to attend as we have been told that it is easier to get to work late rather than leave work early. Thank you to Lovely Linda and Laughing Larry who worked hard to feed you and to fantastic volunteers, Naree, Brenda and Meredith who assisted. I hope your time with the teachers was informative and appreciate your feedback as always. Website gremlins We have had a little glitch with our website; some important pages have dropped off the site. Tech support staff and I will be working today and tomorrow to rectify the problem. Class Organisation I am pleased to advise that we have finalised our class organisation.

As a result, we have redesigned, and are trialling, a school-wide systematic procedure for responding to behavior

that does not meet our expectations of Care, Commonsense, Co-operation and Courtesy.

Essentially STOP requires teachers to follow the same procedure, using the

same language with the same consequences which include time out in class. I do ask teachers to nag children to nag you for their return—sorry.

Meet Your Child’s Teacher We sincerely appreciated the effort that many made to attend our breakfast meeting yesterday. Hunter School of the Performing Arts offers a unique educational environment, being NSW’s only fully-selective public Performing Arts School. The school’s Jun-ior (2-4), Middle (5-8) and Senior (9-12) schools deliver outstanding develop-mental programs, with a gifted and talented focus in Dance, Drama and Music. In addition, academic, welfare and sporting programs complement the delivery of a comprehensive academic Year 2-12 curriculum, that caters for students’ individ-ual abilities. Academic giftedness and learning support needs are accommodated. Enrolment is by audition only with applications for 2012 enrolment being ac-cepted in Years 2-11. The School welcomes applications in these years. However, please be aware that the School is responsive to continuing patterns of enrolment and that the majority of vacancies do occur in the junior and middle years (Years 2-8). Year 2-7 students undertake compulsory studies in Dance, Drama and Music as part of the Junior and Middle School Curriculum. Year 8-12 students undertake major and minor studies in the Performing Arts as elective subjects. This can in-clude the study of more than one Performing Arts field. All students have access to specialist opportunities for tuition and ensemble membership in the Perform-ing Arts. An Entertainment Industry focus is also available for all Hunter/Central Coast students. The school offers strong academic programs in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Visual Arts, Technology & Applied Sciences, Languages Other than English and Personal Development, Physical Education and Health. In 2011, the School will be structured as follows: Junior - 2/3, 4/5; Middle – 4/5, 5, 5/6, 6, and six classes each in Years 7-8; and Senior – six classes each in Years 9-10 and 340 students in Year 11-12 HSC Courses.
