Name: Jordan WinnYear: Junior Hometown: Cary, North Carolina Major: Business AdministrationInteresting Fact: I have been skydiving in Colorado!

This year, Jordan Winn has held the position of the Residence Hall Association

(RHA) President. She is in charge of running the show and being the voice of

the organization. Under her leadership the RHA has grown to new heights. She has challenged the members to rethink what was done in the past in order to improve

the organization. When Jordan first thought about running for the president

position she set goals for herself and the organization:

Preparation: Introduction and Goals

To have freshman know who RHA is and the benefits of getting involved when first arriving on-campus.

Increase  RHA’s  sustainability  efforts.

Increase initiatives in being the voice of the on-campus population.

Increase the use of technology in meetings and programs.

Create  the  theme:  “Welcome  to  the                              World”  to  help  students relate to RHA and feel like they are living in it.2

This is due to the placement of advertisements in residence halls prior to when freshmen move it. Jordan provided the Area Chapter advisors with information packets and encouraged them to host an interest session to get the residents pumped about the various positions. In total, 120 residents campaigned for only 64 available positions.

Jordan wanted to create a friendly environment for members and a welcoming atmosphere for new members. The theme focuses on living on-campus, the relationships that can made, and the leadership opportunity available to them. This theme has helped increase attendance at both RHA meetings and programs. Residents desire to be a part of the “Teal  World”  that Jordan has created!

Jordan has impediment a PowerPoint slideshow that runs before and after the general body meetings. This is used to advertise programs happening around campus and increase interest from residents. Because of the slideshow RHA has seen a huge increase in attendance at programs, and number of applications for the NCARH, SAACURH, and NACURH Conferences.

This year RHA decided to go paperless. Instead of having agendas printed out for those who attend the general body meeting, the agenda is projected on a screen in front of the attendees. This helps reduce our carbon foot print and also cut down cost. Jordan realized last year that most of the printed agendas ended up in the trashcan and knew that there needed to be a change.

Had the highest number of applicants for Area Chapters elections to date.

Implemented the  theme  “Welcome  to the World.”

Started using advertisement Power Points at each body meeting.

Helped HRL go sustainable by having paperless meetings.

Jordan was eager to get involved with Housing and Residence Life (HRL) after arriving for her first semester at UNCW. She learned about the opportunities to be involved with HRL at freshmen orientation and knew that this was something she wanted to be involved with. During her freshman year, Jordan was elected Vice President of Administration of her Area Chapter; she took the position to new heights and cared about what the residents of the area wanted. She constantly reminded the executive board that they were a representation of the residents and should program accordingly.

Over the years, Jordan has continued to stay involved with and HRL. She was elected Vice President of Administration and Finance for RHA her sophomore year and then elected President the following year. She has made many contributions to the organization and encouraged the members think outside the box. Just like her freshmen year, she continues to remind the RHA executive board that they are a representation of the on-campus student population. It is not always about what they want but what the residents would like to see. This has led to the continual growth of  UNCW’s  RHA.

Mile Markers: Accomplishments

Accomplishments

In the past, the three biggest organizations on-campus: RHA, Student Government Association (SGA), and  Association  for  Campus  Entertainment  (ACE)  have  competed  against  each  other  for  student’s  involvement and awards. Jordan did not want this tradition to continue. She set up presidents meetings with the organizations to increase support and collaboration. The organizations are now working for the betterment of the students at UNCW instead of focusing their attention on competing with each other.

RHA is the voice of the on-campus population. To ensure that residents concerns were being heard, comment boxes were place in each residence hall. Residents now have the opportunity to write comments, either enormously or by including their name so that the executive board can follow up with their concern and give them Hawkbills (initiative to increase attendance at RHA meetings and programs) for voicing their concerns.

Once stepping  into  the  position  as  president,  Jordan’s  priority  was to collaborate with NRHH. The two organizations are sisters but in the past have worked little together. NRHH was given a time slot at the annual Area Chapter Training in the Fall to inform the new leaders of RHA about what NRHH was and how they can get involved through OTMs and service projects. Jordan thought that it was important for the Area Chapters to be knowledgeable about how they can recognize others and the programs that they can present in  their  areas.  Under  Jordan’s  encouragement and guidance, RHA executive board collaborated with NRHH through a community service project called Super Seniors. NRHH brought 15 of its members to work alongside RHA in spending quality time with senior citizens in the Wilmington community.

This semester, Jordan scheduled a meeting with the NRHH president, Alissa Tripp, to see how the organizations could collaborate further. NRHH and RHA had a joint interest session in March. This invited students who did not know about NRHH prior, to learn more about the organization and the benefits of joining. NRHH has had a spot on the agenda for the RHA general body meeting in the past. Jordan thought it would continue collaboration if RHA had a spot on the agenda for NRHH general body meetings. This would make sure the NRHH members are knowledgeable about the happening in RHA and ways that they can get involved.

Improved collaboration with other top organizations on campus.

Jordan’s  favorite  part  about  attending  conferences  is the networking opportunities that are available. Jordan has stayed in contact with many friends that she has made at conferences. She often speaks with a friend that she met at her very first SAACURH conference three years ago. At conferences, Jordan can be found attending the president’s  social  and  speaking  with  other  presidents about the running of their RHA. She is always looks for opportunities for RHA to grow on UNCW’s  campus and finds that interacting with other presidents is a way to begin. She has exchanged contact information with presidents from around the state, region, and nation in hopes of continuing communication and feedback outside the conferences she has attended.

Immediately following NCARH 2010, Jordan spoke to her now conference co-chair, Caleb Lewis, about bringing the conference back to UNCW in 2012. She was eager in making this happen and set up meetings with the HRL professional staff. Through her enthusiasm and passion, the conference chairs gained their

support and began the planning process. In September 2010, Caleb and Jordan selected the conference planning committee. Jordan gave insight to the conference staff who had never attended a conference. Her vision is the delegates having the best experience possible. She has implemented Sammy Babies for delegations to find for extra spirit points, welcome gifts already  placed  within  the  delegate’s  room  with  their  t-shirt and name tag, and creating an award for the most sustainable delegation. She also oversees the budget and is currently working to lower the registration fees for schools that will be attending.

UNCW was selected to be the host site for NCARH 2012. Jordan helped write and format the winning bid. She was seen throughout the SAACURH 2010 at University of Georgia and NCARH 2011 at Chapel Hill taking notes about what she intends to impediment for the conference next year.

She holds weekly office hours and has one-on-ones with VP of Programming, VP of Community Service, VP of Multicultural Leadership and Education, and the lead advisor. Jordan has helped the organization grow to its  full  potential  and  be  awarded  SAACURH’s  School  of  the  Year.

Resident Assistant, Seahawk Crossing Jordan has successfully built a community with her 80 residents. She is concerned with making sure her residents have the sophomore experience and plans programs accordingly. She is always available when her residents need someone to talk to about a problem or looking for advise.

Dub Idol Committee, Co-Chair Jordan helped plan a large scale program similar to the popular T.V. Show American Idol. She made many changes to the annual event by including a philanthropic aspect, changing the color of all materials to light purple, and involving other student organization. Over 1,000 UNCW students and staff attended this program.

NCARH 2012, Co-ChairAlong with the other Co-Chair, Jordan helped lead a committee of 10 students in creating a bid to host the NCARH 2012 conference. She has helped implement new ideas to ensure UNCW hosts a successful conference and attendees have the best experience possible.

Crossroads, Peer Educator Jordan is able to teach students about healthy decisions regarding substance abuse and other drugs. She helps plan programs and awareness weeks, teaches incoming Freshman through UNI classes, attends conferences, and actively implements campaigns on her campus. In January 2011, Jordan was selected by her supervisor to attend the NASPA conference for alcohol and other drugs, and was the only student in attendance. Jordan was asked to present a program to professionals in student affairs about the success of the Crossroads Peer Education group.

National Residence Hall Honorary Jordan was inducted into NRHH in the spring of 2009. She currently serves a general body member. She steps up whenever need and has shown to be an access to the executive board. Jordan serves on the Recognition Committee and actively gives input in how to recognize and appreciate other students and staff.

Alpha Delta Pi Sorority This year Jordan decided to join a sorority. She was asked to take on a leadership  position  but  said  “no  thank  you”  because  she  knew  that  she  could not give it her all. She remains a vital member and is looked to for advise from his sisters.

Acknowledgement

Jordan is always thinking outside the box. She challenges whomever she meets to not go along with what has been done in the past but to improve upon it. It is because of this that RHA has seen growth and success. This is not a coincidence, it is because of Jordan’s  creative  thinking  and  dedication. She has surpassed the goals she originally set in the beginning and continues to work for the students. She is most deserving of this award because of the work that she has done this year and the passion she has for residential living.

OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDENTSDIVISON OF STUDENT AFFAIRS

University of North Carolina Wilmington

To the President of the Year Selection Committee:

It is with great honor that we, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) Executive Board at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), write this letter recognizing Jordan Winn for President of the Year Award. She is an inspiration to not only the executive board but the entire RHA body and encompasses the drive and determination which make her a key part in the success of our organization.

Jordan has been an integral part of RHA since her freshman year at UNCW. She first joined RHA as the Vice President of Administration for the Tri-House Area Chapter. After a successful year with her Area Chapter, she ran for the Vice President of Administration and Finance on the RHA Executive Board her sophomore year and won. Now, in her junior year, she is the RHA President.

Throughout  her  year  as  president,  Jordan  has  taken  many  initiatives  to  make  UNCW’s  RHA bigger and better than ever. She began the year of right with the first ever Summer Retreat for the executive board members. This was a time for members to meet, bond, and discuss everything they wished to see accomplished for the upcoming year. During this retreat, Jordan introduced her idea of a theme for the 2010-2011 academic  year,  “Welcome  to  the  Teal World.”  This  theme  was  created  to  integrate  everything that RHA was to do for the year. It was a great way to help build community among the eight independent Area Chapters making them feel like a unified body.

Jordan is the motivational force which drives RHA to succeed. She stands behind the executive board members as they reach for new goals and push the limits of the organization. She also works to make sure members are stepping out of their comfort zone and trying new things that they have never done before. She has helped establish new initiatives within the organization. One initiative was her push for increased sustainability. Unlike past years, the RHA body meeting agenda is displayed on a projections screen instead of being printed out weekly.

Under her leadership, RHA has reached new heights. Now more than ever we are partnering with the two other big organizations on campus, the Student Government Association and the Association for Campus Entertainment. During the year, RHA has had the opportunity to collaborate with these organizations, in events such as TraskTrek, and UNCW Homecoming, to provide stronger programs and learning experiences for the UNCW students. Thanks to her drive for new opportunities, RHA was able to establish indispensable relationships with other organizations to create not only a stronger RHA, but a stronger campus.

Jordan is an ambitious leader at UNC Wilmington and always seeks to draw out the best in people. With her dedication to the organization and the desire to continuously make it better we encourage you to recognize, Jordan Winn, as President of the Year.

Dear Members of the President of the Year Selection Committee:

There are students who touch lives. There are students who leave a lasting impact on a campus community. There are students who can map their personal journey throughout college with milestones achieved through leadership positions. There is one student, Jordan Winn, who answers the call to do all of  this  and  leaves  many  speechless.  On  many  occasions,  Jordan’s  leadership  of  RHA  has  left  me  speechless  and in constant search for words that capture her stunning performance as President of RHA. While this letter of support only provides a glimpse of her talents, my hope is that this glimpse of her legacy will ensure your support for her as the next recipient of the prestigious President of the Year award.

Serving as President of a widely recognized Residence Hall Association is a daunting task. In the spring of 2010, Jordan ran for the position on the platform of taking RHA to the next level. She introduced innovative ideas for collaborative programming with other large organizations, increasing the sustainability efforts in business practices and inspiring younger leaders by strengthening the liaison relationship between every e-board member and a selected Area Chapter. Without hesitation, her passion for the Teal World became contagious and spread through the planning and implementation of change and improvements made to what used to be successful but still business as usual.

Under  Jordan’s  leadership,  RHA  has  joined  with  organizations  including  the  Student  Government  Association and the Association of Campus Entertainment to organize welcome back events that hosted over 200 freshmen students. Jordan played an integral role in initiating this conversation which sparked future collaborative efforts for a fresh take on traditional events including Midnight Madness and Homecoming events. In RHA meetings, Jordan models the importance of sustainability by leading meetings using electronic agendas and by creating and updating slideshows with flyers and announcements that loop prior to the meeting. Overall, Jordan has demonstrated a keen ability to accomplish all that she has set forward to do.

Jordan’s  lasting  legacy  on  RHA  will  be  RHA’s  newly  defined  role  as  a  hub  for  rising  leaders  in  our  Area  Chapters.  With  Jordan’s  heightened  focus  on  Area  Chapters  throughout  her  presidency,  there  has  been  a  significant spike in Area Chapter involvement and community engagement. This year, a record-number of attendees participated in the fall training workshop for newly elected leaders for each Area Chapter and involvement continued to intensify for the annual Winter Conference in January. Jordan accomplished her goal by making it a priority for the executive board members to develop nourishing relationships as liaisons to each Area Chapter. As a result of her motivation to inspire others, many Area Chapter members have sought leadership positions in the NCARH 2012 Conference team, assisted with large-scale program planning, and contribute to productive discussions with University administrators.

John  Quincy  Adams  said,  “If  your  actions  inspire  others  to  dream  more,  learn  more,  do  more  and  become  more,  you  are  a  leader.”  While  my  search  for  words  that  best  describe  Jordan  Winn’s  leadership  has  been  challenging,  this  quote  seems  to  embody  the  genuine  impact  that  Jordan  has  left  on  Dub’s  RHA.  As  an  advisor, I have been honored to work with Jordan Winn who truly serves as an engaged role model in our Teal World and believe she is more than qualified to represent NACURH as President of the Year.

Sincerely,

Jemilia HarrisonJemilia HarrisonResidence Hall Association Advisor
