Bordeaux and its Metropolis are proud and delighted to hold the Presidency of the Community of Ariane Cities (CVA) in 2020, the year of the first launch of the new Ariane 6.The Community of Ariane Cities, of which Bordeaux was a founding member in 1998, brings together European cities and industries working in space transportation. Its aim is to raise public awareness of the importance of the space sector and to share knowledge in the aerospace industry.
The CVA works in several areas to highlight the economic, scientific and social benefits of European activities in space exploration and the technological advances of launchers. It emphasises the importance for Europe of maintaining independent and long-term access to space. It strengthens cooperation between Ariane cities, their industries, space agencies, research institutes and various school and university establishments by providing educational programmes of scientific and cultural content. Finally, it supports the strategic role of French Guiana which guarantees access to space via its spaceport, the Guiana Space Centre (GSC).
For Bordeaux Métropole, this presidency, punctuated by more than 60 dedicated actions, will run for the year 2020, in the framework of an ambitious programme enabling Europe to maintain its independent access to space, in a context of fierce competition. In this regard, the decisions adopted during the Ministerial Conference of the European Space Agency in Seville in November 2019 constitute a strong message of encouragement for all the sector’s stakeholders, and more particularly those based in Bordeaux: ArianeGroup, with more than 3,000 employees on its sites in Saint Médard en Jalles and Le Haillan, is the leading industrial employer in the Métropole. This key role in the European launcher sector stems from a long local industrial tradition, which we shall be showcasing.
Throughout 2020, you will have the opportunity to see, experiment, explore and dream...In 2020, the ‘Moon Harbour’ takes you into space!

IN SPACE TRANSPORTATION.Founded in 1998 as a non-profit organisation, the Community of Ariane Cities (CVA) brings together European cities, known as Ariane Cities, and partner industries working in European space transportation. In particular, the CVA serves to strengthen their cooperation, inform local elected representatives on space activities in Europe, and to contribute to the training of future space sector professionals.
FRANCE LEADING EUROPEAN SPACE AMBITIONS
The Ministerial Conference of the European Space Agency (ESA) on 27 and 28 November 2019 in Seville closed on a highly successful note for the European space industry and consolidated the role of France in this sector. The fruit of lengthy preparations in which France was actively involved, due notably to the presidency of ESA’s Ordinary Council, entrusted to Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman of the CNES (French National Centre for Space Studies), the Member States allocated €14.4 billion which will enable the confirmation or initiation of highly ambitious programmes to strengthen
Europe’s competitiveness and maintain its attractiveness, thus meeting the dual global challenge of competition and cooperation. This considerable amount testifies to the willingness and implication of European countries to invest in space and the pooling of means to shape a solid, ambitious, innovative, responsible and competitive European space industry.
Thanks to its undeniable assets, Bordeaux, a founding member of the CVA in 1998, was unanimously appointed, after Seville, to take up the presidency of the CVA in 2020 alongside its industrial partner, the ArianeGroup

Bordeaux has a renowned tradition of aeronautics activity, in particular thanks to Dassault (Falcon business jets and
the Ouragan, Mystère, Mirage and Rafale military jets), butit also has a lesser-known history in the field of space.
This history dates back to the 17th century, with the creation of the Poudrerie Royale (Royal Gunpowder Works) in Saint-Médard-
en-Jalles. Since the 1960s, the Bordeaux Métropole area has builta reputation for outstanding expertise in the field of solid propulsion
rocket launchers for civil and military programmes alike.
The unique expertise of these Bordeaux-based sites of ArianeGroup constitutes an essential element of the new
Ariane 6 programme which ensures the independence of European access to space.
The 3 local facilities of ArianeGroup are key players in these programmes. Together, they employ more than 3,000 people, making ArianeGroup the biggest industrial employer in Bordeaux Métropole.
• Le Haillan: opened in 1964, this site designs and manufactures solid propellant engines for civil and military launchers under the management of ArianeGroup. It has renowned expertise in the development and production of high-temperature composites, which are also used in industrial fields such as aeronautics.
• Saint-Médard-en-Jalles: The successor of the Royal Gunpowder Works, this site specialises in the preparation of energy materials and the loading of propellant for civil and military boosters (Ariane 5 and 6). It has also developed a biological treatment solution for propellant
and lends its expertise to safety equipment (e.g. gas generators for airbags or fire extinguishing systems, etc.).
• Issac: also located in the municipality of St-Médard-en-Jalles, this site designs and integrates solid propellant stages for civil and military launchers under the management of ArianeGroup. Specialised in the design and implementation of composite materials, it designs and manufactures high-pressure tanks for satellites and launchers, thermal protection and cabling for civil and military launchers and heat shields for space probes, such as Exomars. The unique expertise of these Bordeaux-based sites of ArianeGroup constitutes an essential element of the new Ariane 6 programme which ensures the independence of European access to space.
