cc .. President: Boris M. Struk
Editorial Logistics: Grant Sheldon
VOLUME 79 issue 28, February 4, 2014
Better late than never. Although I guess you will be the judge of that. Perhaps a similar comment was heard
as the clock approached 2pm at the Angler’s on Tuesday with a very healthy crowd of 43 in attendance - all
still awaiting their main course.
This week’s speaker was Detective Senior Sergeant Jenny Wilson. Jenny is our participant in Vic Police Mentor
programme. She is currently manager of the Footscray Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.
She was introduced by her mentor Roger Priestley and then entertained us with stories from her 25 years in
the force. It was a bit cheeky of sergeant Roger Leask to fine her – so he could get one back apparently.
Last week Bernadette bought along three guests to our meeting: Jane Carbone, Jenny Foster and Bernadette’s
son Darcy.
Great news and great work from Bernadette that both Jane and Jenny have expressed interest in joining our
club. Boris has met with them to discuss mutual expectations of being a Rotarian.
Membership Proposals:
Jane Carbone
3 Riverview Rd
Essendon 3040
Classification: Communications
Jenny Foster
272 Pascoe Vale Rd
Essendon 3040
Jenny has attended a meeting of our club previously and is well aware of
the world of Rotary, its membership expectations and obligations. Her
father has been a member and PP at three RCs including Seymour.
Classification: TBA
In addition to our guest speaker Jenny Wilson, our guests this week were Vittori Fontana from Zurich, Allis
from Sweden and Jenny Foster and Jane Carbone (both from that much more exclusive part of the world,
Essendon).

Relay for Life – more walkers are required for the wee hours of Saturday
morning. This is a great event that raises money for a cause that no doubt has touched us all. Our team
will be walking this year to especially remember Michael Baker. Our team will be known as Michael’s Mates.
Please consider and contact Michael P to sign up and if not already done, get your order in for your shirt.
Raffle: Guest Jane Carbone won the raffle but failed to draw the joker.
Polio Plus update: India Reaches historic Milestone. On 13/1/14, three years had passed without a single
polio case being reported in India. This officially makes India a non-endemic country. Only 25 years ago it was
widely accepted that polio could not be eradicated. Enter stage left – Rotary! Then along came the Gates
Foundation who match 2 for 1 all donations made to Polio Plus (up to $35m p.a.) In 2009 there were 733
cases of polio reported in India, in 2010 this was reduced to 42 and in 2011 only 1. Since then zero. The
results achieved in India show we are on track to eradicating polio from the world – forever.
Donations in Kind update: Thirteen very productive years. Since 2000, $39.6m of overseas aid has passed
through the West Footscray facility that your club plays a key role in funding and managing. Stacked end to
end the total number of shipping containers freighted would cover 3.9km. A big thanks to all volunteers and
donors who make this all possible. Contact [email protected] if you’d like to explore how you may be
able to assist.
Birthdays: Lisa Lowcock, Pearl Honson, President Boris.
Club Anniversaries: Alistair Fraser (7 years), Veronica O’ Sullivan (11 years) and Lisa Lowcock (18 years –
clearly her Dad gave her Rotary Membership for her birthday!)
Roger has moved: Roger and Lyn Priestly now reside at 11a Cooper St, Essendon. All other contact details
remain the same.
President Boris’ thought for the day: The way to get started is t quit talking and begin doing.
A man and his ever-nagging wife went on vacation to Jerusalem . While they were there, the wife passed away. The undertaker told the husband, "You can have your wife shipped home for $5,500.00 or you can have her buried here in the Holy Land for $250.00." The man thought about it and then told the undertaker that he would just have her shipped home. The undertaker immediately asked "Why would you spend $5,500.00 to ship your wife home when it would be wonderful to be buried here, in the Holy Land and you would only spend $250.00?"
The man replied, "Long ago a man died here, was buried here and then three days later, he rose from the dead. I just can't take that chance."

March – Relay for Life.
A trip down Memory Lane is often what people get on a visit to Steve Chandler's Shop Memory Lane on
Mount Alexander Rd in Ascot Vale but at the moment the road is even quieter than in the time his building
was built in 1898. Yarra trams is replacing all the tram tracks between Brunswick Rd and Kent Street in Ascot
Vale. Fencing began going up on Friday morning and then the work began with them breaking up the concrete
around the tracks at 12.01am on Saturday morning. By the time Memory Lane opened on Saturday morning,
all the tracks and concrete had been removed for the first 400m and they were well into removing the rest of
it. Of course as a result of this the only way to get into Memory Lane and Denis Kosnar’s picture framing shop,
on the corner of Waratah St, is via the side streets. Many of the shops have chosen to close for estimated
week it will take. Denis has been very proactive in dealing with the Tramways, council and traders and
managed to get the work, originally planned for 2 weeks before Christmas, postponed until the first week of
February. He has also been around putting up signs directing the traffic up the side streets to the retailers that
are still open.
Unfortunately retailing had been quiet after Christmas and has now tapered off completely.
On Saturday night Steve & Pam visited Yim Yam restaurant, just down the road from them on Mount Road and
had a front row view of the work taking place. They advise that there was no leaning on shovels and all the
work was carried out with military precision with trucks dumping screenings then continuing down the road to
pick up the broken up concrete. The works appear to be progressing well and there is a good chance that the
road will be open before Saturday although there is still some power line replacement to be done.
Unfortunately for Steve he also has 7 units being built opposite and a double storey being added to the house
directly behind the shop so parking is going to be a problem for a while.
