From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Producing Artistic Director Presents
Welcome to Love, Laughter, & Linguine (L 3, for short), the eighth and final production of our 13th season, themed “Tabard with a Twist or a Turn.” It’s been an amazing season, filled with memorable
moments and exciting experiences. Thank you for being a part of it. I do hope you will join our journey for our 14th season of six productions, each providing an engaging and entertaining perspective on life. The Early Bird subscription opportunity is available to you until May 5th, so don’t delay — sign up today to be part of next season.
As for Love, Laughter, & Linguine, the idea for this show percolated in my head and heart for many months in late 2012/early 2013 before I ever started writing it. I knew I wanted to explore the ages of a modern woman, from youth to elder years, including the many phases and stages of life (student, career woman, spouse, caregiver, care-receiver, etc.), the idea of a life well-lived, that sort of thing. I also wanted to celebrate life and — in a fun, uplifting way — that part of life that we all, every single one of us, are touched by and will personally experience: death.
From much brainstorming with Jeremy Harris and Doug Baird, the current concept evolved. I spent quite a bit of noodling on the right name for the main character and who she was. I thought of “Phyllis,” “Sheila,” lots of names. In my mind I saw Carol Haws, a dear personal friend and collaborator. So, I settled on naming the character “Carol” and decided to make her a dancer, choreographer, director, teacher, and mentor – not unlike Carol Haws. Ironically, of all the stories in Love, Laughter…, only one story is actually from/about Carol Haws. The others have been borrowed from or inspired by other people, and some I just plain made up! I finished writing the play last summer, with Doug Baird as a wonderful sounding board and collaborator. We have had a blast working together!
An amazing irony and an unexpected “twist” to L 3, the final show in this season of “twists and turns,” is that Carol Haws passed away in January. So although L 3 is not “about” Carol Haws, she was my inspirational catalyst, and I am dedicating this production to her with thanks and appreciation for her many years of friendship and creative collaboration. We used to joke that we “shared a brain.” I miss that part of my brain. © 2014 The Tabard Theatre Company

Anna L. Joham (Sally) is thrilled to be making her Tabard Theatre debut with Love, Laughter & Linguine. Besides pursuing her dream, she moonlights as a singer/server in San Francisco while waiting for her “big break.” Some of her favorite roles have been the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro; Beauty in Beauty and the Beast; Kate in Kiss Me, Kate; and being a part of the ensemble for Chicago. She would like to thank her family and friends for their love, support, and encouragement.
Carol Lanoie (Connie, Choreographer) returns for her fifth Tabard production as a cast member (Stop Time, Lady Be Good, Stompin’ at the Savoy, Babes in Hollywood) and her second as one of the choreographers (Babes in Hollywood). A dancer her entire life, she enjoys being part of the local theatre community, having also performed with South Bay Musical Theatre and West Valley Light Opera. Three squeezes to her fiancé Bruce for putting up with the rehearsal and show schedule of a theatre junkie.
Scarlet Nickhol (AKA Joyce Davis) (Vanessa) returns to Tabard after appearing in The Elves and the Shoemaker. Although new to theater she is not new to the theatre of life, where her career roles unleashed her vocalization talent and passion for communicating and collaborating — helping her connect to the audience and release the juiciness of characters on stage. She studies acting with Billie Shepard at San Jose Rep.
Irene Trapp (Anne, Vocal Director) returns to Tabard after starring in Babes in Hollywood, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Gifts of the Magi, and Follies Concert Version. A studio musician, voiceover artist, film actor, director, teacher, and original Great America Singer, Irene also directed Tabard’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. A career highlight was playing Lady Thiang in American Musical Theatre San Jose’s The King and I with Debbie Boone. Irene dedicates this show to Greg, her husband of 35 years.
Amanda Vogel (Millie, Choreographer) has been dancing since the age of three. This is her first Tabard show, although she has done several shows with WVLO Musical Theatre including Annie, Sugar, and (her favorite) The Drowsy Chaperone. Amanda has recently discovered a love for film acting; she has been pursuing that around the Bay Area and has done four short films so far. By day a barista at Starbucks, Amanda notes that this is her first show with her sister Sarah.
Sarah Vogel (Lauren, Choreographer) returns to Tabard following performances in Babes in Hollywood, Follies Concert Version, Bandstand Beat, The Tin Pan Alley Rag, and Elvis Has Left The Building. She choreographed and assistant-directed The Elves and The Shoemaker, co-choreographed Babes in Hollywood, and was dance captain for Bandstand Beat and The Tin Pan Alley Rag. She received her B.A. in drama from San Francisco State University, where she was a member of the Brown Bag Theatre Company.
Paula Warren (Beverley) is happy to return to Tabard Theatre after appearing as John Hancock in this season’s 1776. Paula was cast in the hit musical Crowns in 2009, where she played Wanda. She has also performed with South Bay Musical Theatre in Saratoga, where she was a cast member of Ragtime, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Hello, Dolly!, and Finian’s Rainbow. She’s excited to be a part of Tabard’s production of this new, original musical.
Tom Dossa (Bass) has been playing bass or guitar in musicals for over a decade. This is his first show for Tabard; some previous shows he has performed in include Hair, The Rocky Horror Show, The Poptimists and Cats. When not playing an instrument, he wishes he was. Interests include writing music, Dr. Who, and European metal.
Andrea (Ande) Jacobson (Woodwinds) is an engineer and writer by day, an avid musician and theatre reviewer by night, and can often be found playing in or conducting various pit orchestras around the South Bay Area. Love, Laughter & Linguine will be Ande’s third Tabard show after playing various instruments for The Story of My Life and The Tin Pan Alley Rag, and Ande is thrilled to be a part of this world-premiere production.

Robert Wylie (Percussion) started his musical theatre career playing “in the pit” for Barnum in Ras Tanura and Guys and Dolls in Dhahran while working for Chevron in Saudi Arabia. Bob has since played percussion for many productions on the San Francisco Peninsula and in Silicon Valley. Bob returns to Tabard after playing for Babes in Hollywood and The Tin Pan Alley Rag.
Doug Baird (Co-Director) is a Tabard associate artistic director who previously directed Tabard’s productions of Making God Laugh, Looking Over the President’s Shoulder, Driving Miss Daisy, and Hold On to Love. Other recent directing credits include Bells Are Ringing, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and My Fair Lady at WVLO Musical Theatre. An award-winning actor, he will be remembered by Tabard audiences for roles in Lady, Be Good; Hold On to Love; The Little Prince; More Than Petticoats; and Fools. Doug notes: “It has been an enormously rewarding pleasure collaborating with Cathy Cassetta on this show.”
Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer, Director) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. For Tabard she’s directed Scapin, Dames at Sea, The Gifts of the Magi, The Dog Sitters, Sabrina Fair, A Taffeta Wedding, It’s a Wonderful Life, Crossing Delancey, Babes in Hollywood, and the award-winning production of Trying; she created and co-wrote More Than Petticoats; and she both directed and wrote Stompin’ at the Savoy, Bandstand Beat, and The Duke, The Count, and Me as well as Love, Laughter & Linguine. Representing Tabard, she serves on the Executive Committee of San Jose Downtown Association and chairs SJDA’s San Pedro Square business committee.
Joe Cassetta (Technical Consultant) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.
John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and has designed sound for many Tabard shows as well as for TheatreWorks, City Lights, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and various clubs and bands for over 30 years. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T. he studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds a M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an MBA from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Robert Lewis (Assistant Stage Manager) returns to Tabard after assistant stage-managing 1776, working in technical roles for The Elves and the Shoemaker, Making God Laugh, and The World Goes ‘Round, and serving as house staff for The Duke, The Count, and Me and Babes in Hollywood. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now a 26-year resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant. Happily married for 34 years, he enjoys singing and playing mandolin with his church music group.
Andrew Marshall (Stage Manager, Technical Director) returns to Tabard after technical-directing 1776 and stage-managing both 1776 and The Elves and the Shoemaker. He was previously a theatre student at Ohlone College, where he directed two plays and wrote and directed a short film. Most recently, he was a technician at California’s Great America where he built mazes and did the show Blades of Horror for Halloween Haunt. Outside of theatre, Andrew is a video game developer.
Nick Nichols (Lighting Designer), Tabard’s executive director, is also the resident lighting consultant for Tabard and Theatre on San Pedro Square. Previously for Tabard he designed the lighting for Farewell, Fitzgerald and is now overseeing the upgrade of Tabard’s lighting system. Before moving into arts management, Nick spent 20 years working as a lighting designer and/or technical director for Villanova Summer Shakespeare, Princess Cruise Lines, Ballet San Jose, and American Musical Theatre of San Jose. Nick holds an M.F.A. in technical direction/lighting design from Temple University and has taught lighting and technical theatre at Santa Clara University, San Jose State and U.C. Santa Cruz.
Joe Reichert (Music Director) has a master’s degree in percussion performance from San Jose State University, where he performed with the SJSU Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra, and also ran the SJSU Marching Band drum line. Joe has performed on Broadway as a percussionist for the musical Cats, and locally with South Bay Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, Children’s Musical Theater, and West Valley Light Opera.
