Notes ON THE PROGRAM

The question of authenticity in perfor-mance has been cussed and discussedsince the beginning of time, and GabrielFauré’s Requiem is no exception. How-ever, we do know some things virtuallyfor certain. If you have been up in theorgan loft at La Madeleine in Pariswhere Fauré became the assistant organ-ist in 1874, (and where the first perfor-mance was held) you will notice very lit-tle space for anything other than a smallchoir and an even smaller orchestra.

We know that, in a letter to his friendPaul Poujand in 1888, he described thepiece as his “petit Requiem.” We knowthat the first performance of theRequiem took place on January 16,1888 and contained only 5 movements.Since it lacked the “Offertoire” and“Libera me” (two of the lengthiermovements), the original performancelasted between 20 and 25 minutes.

We know that there are no first and sec-ond violin section parts, and theirnotable absence gives us another clue asto Fauré’s intent. Coupled with hiscomplete lack of interest in setting anyof the “Dies Irae” movement, which islengthy, dramatic and judgmental, wecan only concur that Gabriel Fauré was

acting intentionally. He had little desirefor a bombastic Requiem, he had littleuse for any instrument that played highand brilliantly, and he desired only towrite a gentle, comforting chamberpiece that might soothe the feveredbrow of the bereaved. At this, he suc-ceeded brilliantly.

The orchestration is simple: the organplays throughout and the stringsmostly double the organ part. Theaccompaniment is often transparent, allowing the vocal line to shimmer. There are several extended sectionswhere the choir does not sing at all—one solo singer is all that is needed tocarry the weightless melodies.

Therefore, this evening’s performancewill be as true to the original intent ofthe composer as we can make it, basedon the facts we know. John Rutter’sarrangement recommends the minimumamount of orchestration required to bal-ance the singing ensemble. There will beno blaring trumpets, no 150-voice cho-rus. Just the soothing and peacefulassurance that when we die, the angelswill, indeed, lead us into paradise.

Missa de Alcaçuz (1996, revised in2016) is part of a set of works thatexpresses, musically, my convictionsabout the presence of man as part of acommunity that believes and that pro-fesses his collective faith and unites theparticular vision that his elements haveabout living, surviving, and transcend-ing life. This set of works begins withthe Mass, followed by the SymphonyNo. 1 (“Adam”) (2002), the Passionaccording to Alcaçus (2012–13), andconclude with the composition of theStabat Mater scheduled for this year. The Mass inaugurates my current styleof composition, which I define as arenewal of armorial aesthetics, whichproposes the creation of an erudite artbased on the popular culture of theBrazilian Northeast. Twenty years afterits composition, the Mass was revised

and is now presented in a new version, for choir, soloists, percussion, andpiano. Danilo Guanais (SP, 1965), act-ing at first as a guitarist from 1980–90,soon discovered the vocation for com-position. In 1996, he recorded his Missade Alcaçus, published in 2013, and in2002, he performed his “SymphonyNo. 1” in Natal/RN. He holds a mas-ter’s degree in arts from Unicamp/UFRN and a Ph.D. in composition fromUNIRIO/ UFRN. He also works withsoundtrack composition and researchesmusicological and educational charac-ter. Winner of the Hangar Prize for BestComposer in the Northeast of Brazil in2004 and Artistic Trajectory in 2016,he teaches musical language at theSchool of Music of the Federal Univer-sity of Rio Grande do Norte.

DANILO GUANAIS (b. 1965) Missa de Alcaçus(45 minutes)

Three centuries after the ProtestantAugsburg Confession, Mendelssohn’stime of mastership began. This enabledMendelssohn to carry on the CatholicPalestrina-style; Bach’s outstanding oeu-vre of cantatas, motets, and oratories;and Anglican anthems after Händel inequal ways. This concert brings all threestyles into the creative work of VeniDomine op. 39 Nr. 1. This piece wascreated in 1831 after Mendelssohn’svisit to a Roman Catholic convent inwhich a choir of invisible nuns inspiredthe master to compose a Catholic litur-gical chant. Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zuDir (“From Deep Affliction I Cry out toyou”) Op. 23 of 1830 is linked to theProtestant choral tradition founded byLuther himself and which was also

central for Bach in his works includingcantatas, motets, oratories and passions. The German Liturgy MWV B 57 (1846)including the Doxology op. 69 Nr. 2(1847) show Mendelssohn’s intensiveefforts for outstanding artistry as well asunpretentious liturgical chants also for Protestantism. Lord, have mercyupon us (1833) MWV B 27, O be joyfulin the Lord (Psalm 100) op. 69 Nr. 2(1847), Why, o Lord, delay forever op. 96 (1840 and 1843) and Hear myprayer (from Psalm 55) MWV B 49(1844/1847) are four examples forresponsorial in morning services, anthems and hymns, particularly inAnglican liturgy.

Thomas More Scott thought that, at onepoint in his life, he would have tochoose between his two earliest musicalinfluences: Brubeck and Bach. Happily,he rejected that thinking and spent therest of his life pursuing the paralleltracks of jazz and sacred vocal music.Dr. Scott, who has his Ph.D. in musictheory and composition, has spentdecades writing, performing, andrecording jazz music, having playedwith luminaries like Bill Watrous, ClarkTerry, and Bob Hope. Recently, he per-formed in Paris with François Moutin.Dr. Scott has also conducted choirs atthe Vatican, the Duomo in Florence, andSt. Mark’s in Venice, and now atCarnegie Hall. Robert Page called hisensembles “deeply musical.” Havingstudied conducting with Joe Miller atWestminster Choir College, WilliamWeinart at Eastman, and Mark Shapiroat the European American MusicalAlliance (EAMA) at La Schola Canto-rum, Paris, Dr. Scott cites the keyboardworks of J.S. Bach as his constant source

of inspiration. Dr. Scott is the director ofmusic ministries at The First Congrega-tional Church of Hudson, OH.

The Hudson Festival Choir (andorchestra) has its genesis in a projectthat Dr. Scott began three years ago atFirst Congregational Church of Hud-son, OH. In conjunction with theAkron Symphony Orchestra, he wantedto present major choral/orchestralworks in a liturgical setting duringLent. A 40-year supporter of amateurmusic-making, he opened auditions toany singer in Hudson who wished tohave the experience of participating inthe performance of great repertoire thatfew churches would be able to carry outwith their own resources. The processwas so successful that they continuedthe following year with anotherchoral/orchestral work, and theirCarnegie Hall premiere is their thirdopportunity to share their amateurmusic-making with a wider audience. The Akron Symphony players haveeven been replaced with amateur instru-mentalists, and the net was widened forsingers outside of the Hudson area forthis performance. This everymanapproach carries on a venerable Ameri-can tradition of amateur performancewhich has fallen into sad disrepair overthe last several generations. Profes-sional choruses and orchestras haveeffectively crowded out the amateurmusician’s place in high level musicalperformance. We hope to be part of atrend moving back to the roots of per-formance opportunities for the ordi-nary citizen.
